about 3000km ago i recently changed the gearbox oil to redline lightweight shock proof (smurfs blood) in my r33 turbz. i started to get a bit of fluid coming out of the breather valve, i'm pretty sure. so i ran a rubber hose to the top of the engine bay. its been a while and i'm still getting a little bit of fluid coming out of the hose and onto the engine bay.

the bolt on the side of the gear box has been taken off, and got the correct amount of oil in it. and nothing extra came out of the breather valve.

approx close to the full bottle of fluid went in, about 3.5L i think and was poured in through the shifter inlet, inside the car.

Now anyone got a simular problem? any advice.

i want to place the rubber hose somewhere else as i'm stick of taking the oil off the engine :P

however i'm trying to work out if everything is normal.

Hmm, when I did a fluid swap with the lightweight-shockproof I had no leakages that I knew off. Maybe you over filled it? Though I recall using a full us gallon plus a touch extra to get mine to the filler hole (I filled through this with a pump bottle). I did let mine drain overnight though.

It should only leak if it's got too much I'd of thought but I'm not an expert. We're talking a 5-spd manual right?

yer its the 5 speed turbo, NOT A GTR or auto

is it ok to fill it via the shifter? because i was reading that gtr can't because of the transfercase, is that right?

I know it's fine to fill through the shifter in the GTsT but I'm not sure about the GT-R as I didn't have to swap mine when I had the GT-R, I only did it in my GTsT.

Only thing I could think of would be overfilling but if you said you'd checked the filler hole and it was fine yeah?

open up the filler plug and see if anything comes out. if oil comes out, you over filled it. from time to time they will throw out oil during hard driving, usually only happens on the track though. you can lengthen the breather, or other solution i've seen on track cars is to make a little expansion tank at the end of the breather. so the breather feeds into a vented tank which then allows the oil to drain back down into the box. but on a road car you shouldn't be having the problem. the other less happy answer is that something is wrong with the box, but it's more commonly just too much oil.

yes GTR cannot be filled via the shifter hole as the GTRs shifter goes into the transfer case, not into the gearbox. GTS4 is the same. GTST is fine to fill through the shifter hole, but personally i find it easier and less chance of overfilling and less chance of mess to just fill it through the filler plug as it's meant to be. :domokun:

K thanks, however has anyone had a similar problem? Cause I'm considering putting in another type of fluid but the box itself feels really good using the light weight shockproof RedLine stuff. Not sure but is there an simple explanation? Some tell me to only pour 3L in! Anyone no wat Nissan reccomend?

Mine took a whole gallon bottle and then a bit more using a pump bottle and the filler hole.

I let mine drain overnight.

Boys i gotta say a simple question like how much oil in your 5speed and only 1 response (2 in thread)

Thanks action dan

your only spose to fill it up to the filler hole on the side of the gear box, if you must fill it throught the shifter then have the filler hole open and when it starts comming out of that hole then it full,

if i was at home id look up the specs in a workshop manual for you but im not home for a few weeks

I'm having the same problem.

I had a look under the car after a long country drive to find a fair bit of blue gearbox oil at the rear of the gearbox and on the crossmember:

The car's also recently been on the dyno so it may be from that too. It's an R34 GTT with R34 RB25DET gearbox and Redline Lightweight Shockproof.

I had a better look today and it's definitely coming from the breather:

Is there meant to be a hose connected to the breather? If so, where does it connect to? This is a recent conversion so maybe this is something that's been missed in the install...

I was just trying undo the driver side 1/2" plug (refer right arrow below) on a level surface to check the oil level, can't get enough leverage, is there a good trick to this?

Thanks!!

Got the filler plug open yay. There's still oil in there but I'd estimate the level to be 2-3 mm down from the edge of the filler hole. Photo below though it's a bit hard to see.

How much oil do you reckon I need to fill it up to full? And how do I fix the breather hose so this doesn't happen again??

Cheers

Yes, breather runs up to there. Someone with small hands might be able to fit it up as per original, but it doesn't have to go there. Just get a long bit of hose and run it up behind the engine and fasten it to some convenient point.

FWIW, my breather hose runs up to the normal spot and I still get the shockproof foaming up and bleeding out of it. It does it when the car gets a flogging. So I am going to (one of these days) extend my breather hose up higher anyway.

I had the same issue, i put a common clear plastic fuel filter ( for a carby engine) in the middle of the breather hose and ran the end to up behind the head (as per factory). This fixed the problem, the fuel filter acts as a oil/ air separator, and only cost a few $.

Cool I'll do that. I assume I can use any old auto hose for this?

Great idea! Do you mean one of these:

Silly question, which way around should this go?

...

Also another thing, it looks like my breather connector is bent, it's pointing down not forward (see photo of gearbox above). I'm not too keen to trying to bend it back as it might crack. What this means though is that there will be a bend in the hose and some oil may sit there, will this be a problem?

That filter is a little motorbikey one. It'll probably work, but the cheap $2 ones (that look like the original Ryco ones, about 65mm long, maybe 50mm diameter) are probably better. They have more volume inside.

Fit it so that the outside is connected down to the gearbox. The inside of the filter element should face atmosphere.

Use low pressure fuel hose for best resistance to oils.

    • Hey Dave, welcome aboard! Good to see another soon-to-be Stagea owner here. The wagons are awesome — plenty of space, still got that Skyline DNA, and loads of potential if you’re into mods. Definitely post up pics when you get it, everyone here loves seeing new builds. What model/year are you looking at?
    • See if you can thermal epoxy a heatsink or two onto it?
    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
    • So, what else.... Power. I don't know what it is making because I haven't done a post tune dyno run yet; I will when I get a chance. It was 240rwkw dead stock. Conclusion from the day....it does not need a single kw more until I sort some other stuff. It comes on so hard that I could hear the twin N1 turbos on the R32 crying, and I just can't use what it has around a tight track with the current setup. Brakes. They are perfect. Hit them hard all day and they never felt like having an issue; you can see in the video we were making ground on much lighter cars on better tyres under brakes. They are standard (red sport) calipers, standard size discs in DBA5000 2 piece, Winmax pads and Motul RBF600 fluid, all from Matty at Racebrakes Sydney. Keeping in mind the car is more powerful than my R32 and weighs 1780, he clearly knows his shit. Suspension. This is one of the first areas I need to change. It has electronically controlled dampers from factory, but everything is just way too soft for track work even on the hardest setting (it is nice when hustling on country roads though). In particular it rolls into oversteer mid corner and pitches too much under hard braking so it becomes unstable eg in the turn 1 kink I need to brake early, turn through the kink then brake again so I don't pirouette like an AE86. I need to get some decent shocks with matched springs and sway bars ASAP, even if it is just a v1 setup until I work out a proper race/rally setup later. Tyres. I am running Yoko A052 in 235/45/18 all round, because that was what I could get in approximately the right height on wheels I had in the shed (Rays/Nismo 18x8 off the old Leaf actually!). As track tyres they are pretty poor; I note GTSBoy recently posted a porker comparo video including them where they were about the same as AD09.....that is nothing like a top line track tyre. I'll start getting that sorted but realistically I should get proper sized wheels first (likely 9.5 +38 front and 11 +55 at the rear, so a custom order, and I can't rotate them like the R32), then work out what the best tyre option is. BTW on that, Targa Tas had gone to road tyres instead of semi slicks now so that is a whole other world of choices to sort. Diff. This is the other thing that urgently needs to be addressed. It left massive 1s out of the fish hook all day, even when I was trying not too (you can also hear it reving on the video, and see the RPM rising too fast compared to speed in the data). It has an open diff that Infiniti optimistically called a B-LSD for "Brake Limited Slip Diff". It does good straight line standing start 11s but it is woeful on the track. Nismo seem to make a 2 way for it.
