Dont get me wrong, I'm fully licenced and have been for 4 years now. But the purpose of law is to preserve peoples rights, not take them away. So I guess I have a bit of a pet hatred for these sorts of things

Thats very true, the proportion of P platers across the roads has obviously increased due to the additional 2 years required.

All i know is that any measure that the government takes now, wont make a big difference. Everyone is different, there are just people ouit there who think they are above the law and can do whatever they want and will never learn.

My mentaility from when i was 17 when i first got my licence to now when im turning 19 has greatly changed.. not by the government or the media.. but just my personal mentality behind it. there is no point or no reason for anyone to speed on the roads.

Maybe some government sanctioned or oganised track events to release that "steam" drivers have.

For gods sake, i release my speed when i go Go-Karting.. and that is way more fun and competitive than racing on the streets, for bragging rights and the likelihood of an innocent dying.

Track incentives, and positive goals to work towards should sway the p platers a lil' bit more.. we are young, so straight discipline doesnt work at all on our generation.

The media also seem to forget that 6 years ago they increased the P-Plate demographic by two thirds once they brought in an additional two years of green P's. Now they harp on about how P-Platers are responsible for more accidents. Of course they are, because in the past the same age group of people were fully licenced...

A 78-year-old Melbourne man caught speeding at 170km/h on a winding road has become the oldest person to have his car impounded under Victoria's hoon laws.

The man was driving the Nissan Pulsar at 170km/h in a 100km/h zone in Brandy Creek Road, Warragul, east of Melbourne on January 1 when he was caught by police.

He was following a Nissan Skyline driven by a 36-year-old man.

Acting Sergeant Carlo Visser said the road was six metres wide and winding.

"It is disappointing to see a senior member of our community being so irresponsible - what example does this set for younger drivers?" he said.

"The man expressed to us that he believed he was a skilled driver, and that he races cars.

"But we fail to see how a driver can be competent when they are tearing around roads at 170km/h knowing that other drivers will not be expecting you.

"To put those people's safety - and your own - at such risk is really just toying with death," Act Sgt Visser said.

Both men had their cars impounded and paid $600 to retrieve their vehicles from the Warragul impoundment on Monday.

The 78-year-old from Narre Warren North and the 36-year-old Canterbury man will both appear before court where they face fines and licence suspensions.

Previously, the oldest driver to have their car impounded for speeding was a 64-year-old Melbourne man who drove a Porsche at 110km/h in a 60km/h zone.

Police have already impounded 42 vehicles in just six days from Victorian drivers.

Well we're gonna' have to sit back and just watch what the government have to offer now, as much as they try to make it stricter, theres gonna' be some idiot going a lil' too fast, kill someone, then another rehaul of the rules just to justify how the government couldve prevented that idiot killing that innocent.

Media basically want all the young ones off the road, you learn from your mistakes.. but understandibly you shouldnt learn from taking someones life..

It would be cheaper and much more effective to install a black box in every car wearing p-plates

that logged speed and location, stored it, and dumped the data once a month via 3g to a

central computer that then analyzed for violations.

the boxes could be tamper proof and issue a "ok" signal that cops would pickup when they saw a p-plate

to make sure nobody was driving on a P with no box installed, or one that was screwed with.

If they can monitor home detentions with ankle bracelets they can do it for cars and p-platers.

they could analyze the data for a pattern of bad & dangerous driving, not small infringements.

Good plan! Let's all get I.D chip implants too... Just to be sure that none of us are really terrorists.

Driver education might give them a false sense of security on the roads, i'm a bit 50/50 on the matter.

well keeping people scared of driving doesn't seem to be working, people will always speed, you may not be a "street racer" but everyone has sped before, even when travelling at the speed limmit fatalities happen. The main reason for fatalaties is people not being able to controll a car. an unexperienced person can loose controll in a slalom at only 50km/h, where as another experienced person can do the same manouver at close to double the speed.

I refuse to believe speeding is the problem, in these 2 incidences with the idiots that smashed last weekend had a whole lot of contributions that lead to the death of the bondi girl. Speeding was a factor, but at the same speed in the same car on the same road there is a massive chance that with our skills brought about by joining a club like sau that encourages safe skid days, opportunities for car controll courses i bet my life that most of us could have avoided the crash all together or at the very least had an accident that wasn't life threatening if it was us behind the wheel.

im off my p's in march so the issue doesn't really bother me much, by the time the legislation comes the chances are im off p's.

Ive had my R33 gtst for a year now, i havent had any incidents??? just car insurance is giving me 50% no claim bonus next week, my rear tyres are still in great condition ( original from when i bought the car). Not every p plater is a f**kwit, the ones that are f**kwits get killed.

also at the end of the day the road fatalities last year were low around 500 ish for the whole country. Considering how many people drive every day i dont think we have a peoblem with p platers, speeding or hoons.... smoking is a much bigger problem than speeders, there is between 6000-7000 smoking related deaths per year, if the govenrment was actually serious about saving lives why dont they ban smoking???

Its all to do with votes and revenue.
