Tell me it's not true :(

I am just about to get one of these Nistune Z32 ECUs installed in my R33!

@Darkhalf please sort this out and give us confidence in this product...

I'll be over $1000 out of pocket and not very happy if my tuner (not Trent anymore) can't get this solution working!

I look forward to an update mate

Lets get this straight it is not a nistune issue as much as an incompatibility between some Z32 ecu's and the R33 car itself, we have done about 20 or so (upto 400rwkw) and of those 20 about 6 give major headaches (r32 nistuned ecu worked so its not the cars), since i cannot differentiate the exact problems between ecu serials and r33 model series1, 2 or 2.5 i have stopped doing them, Stao's latest issues were the 16bit ecu.

Nistune is a great system and is generally our Number 1 recommendation for S13, S15 and R32 / R34's.... just not R33 with ecu conversions :P

+1

Just use the rb20 ECU and an MSD switch/eboost street ffs guys

Its like $150 MAX for the switch and the rb20 ecu are dime a dozen.

It is a non issue, just sell your Z32 one and use RB20, no rewiring for knock sensors etc needed it just works.

On another thought its a good thing. Because Trent stopped you from dumpping thounsands of dollars in trouble shooting and headaces.

Toshi is comming to melbourne for remap you can just get that for $500. Or I can supply you a adaptronic ecu for $1000.

or he could get a nistune rb20 ecu which is better than either of those

Actually Stao it was precisely because of Trent talking up this Nistune Z32 ECU solution for the R33 that I purchased one in the first place! (through him)

I will wait to see what Darkhalf comes back with...

Contrary to what Trent says this is a 100% a Nistune problem - except of course when you are using an unapproved 16bit ECU!

Nistune sell this solution for the R33 so they are obliged to sort these issues out and get it working.

My Z32 ECU is on the Nistune approved list and was modded by them in SA - I damn well expect them to get it working!

P.S. I just spent a bazillion dollars on turbo, injectors, clutch etc and didn't leave myself budget to buy a $1000 ECU

@Rolls - Thanks for the advice mate but I got this Z32 ECU because Trent and everyone else were adamant that it is a better solution than the R32 ECU.

Trent said he's tuned 20 of them and 6 out of 20 had problems, thats 30% risk out of “supported” ecus. Stao's S2 R33 with 16 bits z32 ecu can't even drive properly, and he's out pocket for 6 hours tuning, that already $1000 spent. What amuses me from Darkhalf's reply is that they've still chipped that ecu knowing it’s not supported / won't work.

Sale that ecu to who ever wants to tune it, then get a proper ecu, or wait till they fix up their bugs.

I had the z32 in mine also.

Played up constantly and they could never get it right. Gave me the shits

Changed to a r32 ecu but now no vct. Ive got an Eboost Street so apparently theres something that can be done there. But in short I cant be bothered finding someone who will know how to do this, as clearly i dont.

In my personal experience everything that gets tinkered with, seems to effect something else until the car shits its arse.

All good though if your a mechanic and can sort these issues out without paying through the nose....

This isn't how you win friends and influence people.

http://nistune.com/docs/Z32_ECU_Modifications_Direct_R33_Plugin%20V6.pdf says:

2) We recommend Z32 (8 bit) ECU’s for this modification. These can be any JDM , EDM or 1990-1992 USDM model ECU. It does not matter if the ECU is naturally aspirated or turbo, manual or auto.

(Nissan part numbers 23710-30Pxx, 31Pxx, 37Pxx, 40Pxx, 41Pxx, 46Pxx, 47Pxx and 48Pxx).

Avoid later model USDM (1993-1996) 16 bit Z32 ECU’s (Nissan part numbers 23710-45Pxx, 53Pxx, 51Pxx).

3) Note that most USDM Z32 ECU’s are not stamped with a Nissan part number. However there is a manufacturer (JECS) part number which begins with A18. We can work out the Nissan part number if you contact us with the JECS part number, or you can connect to the ECU using any consult tool to retrieve the Nissan part number.

Have these guidelines been adhered to?

How does Nistune compare with a Dr Drift style tune where a daughter board is installed for an R33?

I have been using one of these for the last 3-4 years with no dramas. The only problem so far is finding someone else to tune it. Nothing wrong with Dr Drift tune but he is often booked out for weeks

Jimmy

So what should do you think I should do? Spend $600 and have a punt to find out?

Oh and BTW that tuner who was the "go to guy" for these things now won't touch them with a barge pole... excuse me if I am not filled with confidence

Stop whinging that the product does not even work if you don't even know if it works or not on your car...

I would not be bagging out a manufacturer on a public forum when you haven't even used the product so have no idea if it works or not.

Then get an rb20 ecu, its guaranteed to work.

Why is this discussion even being held in this thread?

If you've got an issue, talk to Matt @ NIStune, if you're not a c0ckhead he will most likely help you sort it out. But until you actually RUN the ecu you don't even know IF you have a problem or not (it has been said that not ALL 16-bit ECU's have issues).

You're obviously having second thoughts so you might as well get rid of it and use whatever your new tuner suggests you use and be done with it.

Settle down mate... Who is bagging who?

All I said was that if there is an underlying issue with the Z32 ECU here (which appears to be the case) then my expectation is that it's Nistunes responsilbility to resolve it.... which they appear to be doing. Clearly I am not happy with this situation and other people telling me to just buy another ECU is not the answer I'm looking for here.

When the tuner who was the "go to guy" in VIC for these things turns around and tells you he won't touch them with a barge pole I think there is a little problem no?

I don't see what you are whinging about. You have an ECU that is on the approved list, why are you now assuming it is not goin to work before you even try it? My mate had a Power FC that shat itself. Does that now mean all Power FC's are shit and not going to work? At least with NIStune, Matt will try to help you.

If you've followed the guidelines That jrm posted then give the ECU a go before bagging it out. If you haven't, don't blame the company for it.

If you're not prepared for expensive set back, don't modify cars. Of course the more you modify the more likely things are to stuff up.

I agree with Bubba, this is not an issue that should even be discussed in this thread.

you have clearly missed the point

    • If it dies, then bypass. The task isn't difficult. I have one running on a standard R32 FPCM. That's after nearly 20 years of it running an 040, which pull substantially more current than the Walbro. They're not the same module, but I'd hope it indicates that the R33 one should be man enough for the job. I think people kill them when putting proper sized pumps on them, not these little toy pumps we're talking about here.
    • Silicone spray won't hurt anything. And if it does, that's an opportunity to put some solid steel spherical bushings in, so you can really learn what suspension noise sounds like, If you're going to try it, just spray one bush at a time, so you can work out which one is actually noisy. My best guess is that if the noise started only since putting the coilovers in, then it is just noise being transmitted up through the top mounts of the struts, and not necessarily "new" noise from bushes. But it's almost impossible to know.
    • Are you saying the 34 is SUV height, and not that we're talking about an SUV here? (because if we're talking about an SUV, you don't fix them. You just replace them when something breaks. Not worth establishing sufficient emotional connection with an SUV to warrant doing any work on one). I wouldn't jack my car up on a short little loop of 10mm steel rod poking out through a hole in the bumper bar, front or rear end. I realise that we're probably not talking about that type of loop at the front, being the one under/behind the bar on a Skyline.... but even for that one, trying to jack up on what amounts to a thin piece of steel, designed purely for withstanding a horizontal tension force, not a vertical compressive force (and so would be prone to buckling/crushing) and, my most particular bitch about it - located RIGHT AT THE EXTREME FRONT OF THE CAR, applying a load up through the radiator support panel, etc, with almost the entire mass of the car cantilevered between there and the rear wheels? Nope. Not doing that. Not on the regular. That structure out there in front of the front crossmember is not designed to carry load in the vertical direction. Not really designed to carry any load at all, really. The chassis rail that the tow point is connected to would be fine loaded in tension, as per towing. Not intended to carry the mass of the whole car, especially loaded all on one rail, with twisting and all sorts of shitty load distribution going on. No, I will happily drive up on some pieces of wood, thanks. That can only happen on driven wheels, and they are at the other end of the car, and this problem does not exist at that end of the car. And even then, I have been known to drive up on at least 1x piece of 2x8 each side at the rear, simply to reduce the amount of jack pumping necessary to get the car up high enough for the jack stands. What really really shits me about Skylines is the lack of decent places for chassis stands at either end of the car. You'd think they'd be designed into the crossmembers.
    • I've got MCA Blues on my V36 Skyline, and while I've managed to sort out issues with scrubbing/bottoming out by raising it a smidge and increasing the damping hardness, the rear end still sounds *super* noisy when driving on anything other than the flattest surface imaginable. It sounds like a small party of flamingos are just chatting away in the back, which makes me think there are several link points in the suspension contributing to the noise. Am I hearing dried out/worn bushings? None of it sounds like metal-on-metal, it sounds more like hard rubber squeaking on metal. It's been suggested that a bit of silicon spray on each bushing might quiet them down, but I'm not sure what material the current bushings are made of (probably factory, I imagine) and whether silicon spray will degrade that material.
    • The obvious answer here is get a ND2/3 RF with the Targa top. The red is nicer, too!
