hi everyone

just wondering if there are any good books or websites out there that people have used that are great for learning everything about tuning. wanting to learn more the theory behind it all. i do know some basics but want to be more informed when talking to my tuner. i currently have a hks pro v, so unfortunately i cant do any tuning myself but still want to know more.

also are there any good threads on this site specific for tuning rb26.

cheers

ben

unfortunatly there is no guides for dummys or "how to tune" documents. you have to pretty much work it out yourself, and don't bother asking other tuners because they seem to like to keep what they know to themself's for some reason.

so this is what you need,

aftermarket ecu thats tunable with laptop

laptop

12v to 240v inverter

wideband afr setup

and alot of balls because if you stuff up then you have a broken engine.

good luck

in my history of tuning i have only had 2 motors with issues, they were both built by the same dodgy builder. One of them spun a bearing about 6 months after the tune and the other had bearing issues after being on the dyno for around 20 minutes or so due to oil issues.

I have a good friend who is a tuner, and without him there is no way i would know what i know today and he always pointed me in the right direction to learn, 90% of the time he would not give me answers but give me tips on how to find the answer because you do not learn when someone tells you all the answers.

Excellent thread, i've been considering the same thing myself, just picked up a datalogit for my pfc so thats a start... although i didnt thinkabout the inverter for the laptop... i guess i will need a few hours of battery to do things properly.

As far as the other kit you mentioned GT are there any specific bits of kit you'd recommend. I noticed you seemed pretty happy with the gizzmo knock amp thing (cant recall its name).

Would you say one of these is a must. Also if i'm looking to consider the emmisions side of things (lets say i wanted to do an emissions friendly tune for if i get epa'd) do you have any thinoughts or suggestions on what to look at in that area.

Much like you mentioned i'm looking for guidance as opposed to outright answers. I'd much prefer to understand what i'm doing as opposed to doing it because someone told me to.

Someone mentioned the motec stuff above (courses knowledge base etc) does anyone else have any other resources they care to share.

I know that this or last months HPI magazine had some tech articles on tuning.

yeah i know things like that arent cheap. but i prefer to spend the cash in the right place and learn to do things properly.

I figure that if i'm willing to risk my engine learning least i can do is spend some cash on some kit to help me detect bad things.

Gizzmo K-mon costs about $1200 retail. I suggest you buy a Techedge AFR meter first, www.wb02.com.

You don't even know how to tune yet and your talking about passing emissons test? you need to learn how to crawl before you can run a marathon mate.

After you have tuned about 20 or 30 cars then you should try and work out how to get into the advanced stuff otherwise you will never get anywhere.

Good luck with it.

Yeah thats not cheap at all... and they dont have it in the colour i like... AFR it is then :P.

As far as basic compared to advanced tuning tasks go, i understand that tuning to a goal, be it max power or lower emissions isnt as simple as sit down plug in and away you go. But i normally find that i learn best by applying what i'm learning, can you suggest any tasks that would be good when tuning purely for the sake of learning? it seems that without a dyno tuning for power isnt sane and that basing the results on seat of your pants feeling isnt all that empirical. Would detuning for different fuels be classified as a big job eg down to a safe tune for 95 octane then back to a safe tune for 98??

What were the milestones you set yourself when it came to learning???

have a look at this thread, http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/Ro...d+tune+power+fc

that was when i first started, i just wanted to learn how to tune my own car to save on tuning costs and it just exploded to levels that i never even thought about reaching.

the first task for you mate will be to re-set your power fc. and re-tune it completly from scratch without blowing it up.

If you succeed then do mods to your car and re-tune to suit. I only suggest playing with your own car before you start tuning other cars

Cheers GT, that sounds like a plan to me. I can always save the current tune to the laptop anyway if i need to go back to a known safe point.

Regarding safety margins, is the knock meter on the pfc up to scratch when it comes to tuning and can its reading be trusted?

From reading, most guides seem to say "alter timing and fuel until knock is detected and back off 3 degrees or so " or something similar. If the pfc's knock meter is rudimentary at best i'm worried that by the time i pick up that its knocking the damage is already done... even if it is below say 20.

    • One year is a bit concerning. Did you try contacting GSP? It says 5 year warranty on the box if I remember correctly. I'm also running their driveshafts on my S2 Stagea.   You could check the part numbers on Amayama for your year. Here's the link for my 1998 which gives the 39100-23U60 part number. Well, that and 39100-23U70. https://www.amayama.com/en/genuine-catalogs/epc/nissan-japan/stagea/wgnc34/6649-rb25det/trans/391 What does it say for yours?
    • I ordered a GSP Front R/H Axle from here - https://justjap.com/products/gsp-premium-front-driveshaft-r-h-nissan-r32-r33-r34-skyline-gtr-stagea-4wd#description It lasted around a year before one of the boots blew out. I'm lowered, but I have GKTech roll center adjusters. One year seems a little premature. I think I'm going to spend the extra money on an OEM cv axle this time. This website - https://tfaspeed.com/collections/nissan-stagea-wgnc34-x-four-parts/products/nissan-stagea-awc34-260rs-rb26-right-front-axle-drive-assembly Makes it sound like the readily available OEM CV axle will only fit 11.1999 Stagea and up (mine is a 2.1997 S1). The JustJap listing didn't mention any years or anything for the GSP axle. Amayama shows '11.1999' and up as well for that part number. As well as 'plastic boot type'. See attached picture. So I guess my question is, does that axle (39100-23U60) really only fit S2 Stagea? It's the front driver side. If it does, I'd love to buy that instead of rolling the dice on another GSP. I've found that OEM one cheaper here: https://www.partsfornissans.com/oem-parts/nismo-jdm-r32-r33-r34-skyline-gtr-r32-gts4-right-front-axle-3910023u60 and here https://www.nissanparts.cc/oem-parts/nismo-shaft-ft-drive-3910023u60 Just a little confused because the JapSpeed listing for the GSP front driver axle doesn't mention any specific years or anything and it fit my S1 Stagea fine. So will 39100-23U60 fit my S1 Stagea even though technically it says '11.1999' and up? What would have changed? Thanks.
    • Thanks for the info. The only "Issue" I've had with the shifter is I always found the throw between 4th and 6th gear too close. I'm always worried to shift into 4th accidently and sending my motor to the moon. Adam LZ recently came out with a video and stated Serialnine revised their shifters to correct this and will change all the revised parts for 150$. Strangely enough, I contacted Serialnine right after and they denied it and said it's bullshit. I found that strange as he's a distributer. I'll keep this forum post updated on that saga.
    • Yep that is correct. It allows you to adjust the short throw range from what I can tell
    • Car has been running great, I've put about 300km's of break in time on it. First thing that stands out with properly sealing rings is no more noticeable crankcase smell coming out of my catch can. This may seem insignificant, but the constant smell while driving around was infuriating. It's also nice to see my oil level remain stable. Two new issues have developed that I only noticed this weekend though. There's a very noticeable driveline vibration past 100kmh. I only noticed it now as I've been babying it under 100kmh in the backroads. This comes as no surprise as I'm running a one-piece shaft, and I paid zero attention to my driveshaft angle when I put everything back in. I also have a fair bit of voltage drop on hot starts. The starter audibly is forcing. No issues on cold start though. I must not have removed all the paint under my main block ground during assembly. I'll try and take care of both those issues this week once the kids are asleep.  I also received all the parts I was missing for my direct port setup. I will hopefully have pictures of that up soon. I'm hoping to get back on the dyno the week of June 30th as I'll be on vacation. I'm confident I should be able to make north of 500rwkw on pump gas and WMI. I'll go back again later this summer with E98, but I want to confirm my ethanol content sensor is working properly first. I've never seen it read anything but 11%. This makes sense for our 10% ethanol content pump gas here, but I would expect the occasional movement between fill ups.
