This thread is steming partially from a certain recent thread involving an R33 gtr 'nismo edition' and also my experiences whilst searching for a new car earlier this year

i'll kick it off

Whilst searching for another R33 gts-t at the start of this year to replace my recently stolen s15 i came accross some interesting characters to say the least

one bloke was selling this white R33 gts-t which on the phone he claimed to be in perfect condition, also stated i 'wouldn't find another one better'

.. so with high hopes i trundled along to port melbourne to check out this apparently amazing condition skyline.. only to be greeted with probably the biggest pile of donkey dung i'd ever seen, the drivers door had clearly been opened as hard as it could into a pole, every panel was a different shade of white/cream and the engine bay was far from flattering.

with my dreams crushed i reluctantly took it for a test drive, whilst on the drive i asked the normal obvious questions whilst i really did not care as the most part of me had already made up my mind!

only just a few minutes into the test drive i asked the obligatory question "has it ever been smoked in" .. "nah" the owner replied, and proceeded to flip down the ash tray to prove to me this was the case, upon inspection i can see a nice white cloating of ciggarette ash all over the ashtray, not to mention the car smelt like arse!

it gets better, about 45 seconds later he pushes in the ciggarette lighter, reaches into his pocket pulls out a dart and proceeds to light up and start smoking...

lets just say i didnt buy that skyline!

hahah interested to see what other funny/strange things people have come across while searching for a new car!

When I was buying my car I talked to the seller on the phone asking him how many K's has the car done to which he replied "Around the 86k mark". When I got to his place to see the car there was 154k on the clock lol. When asking him about it he said he "got confused".

The biggest liars are the new car dealers.

They are TRAINED to lie straight to your face and to get you to sign on the dotted line no matter what.

I told you $25,000 over the phone? Yeah, thing is, there's unfortunately been a price increase. Straight from the head company, just got the memo. It's now $26,000. Sorry you had to drive an hour to get here.

Yeah, we have heaps in stock. Paid the money? Oh, wait we sold out, next one's on a boat from Japan, will be here in 4 months.

Signed the contract for this amount of money? Oh, sorry the price just went up $1000. What's that? You refuse to pay the price increase? It says it right here in section 4.5a of page 16 in size 6 font "The dealer at any time may increase the purchase price of the vehicle. The buyer is bound by the terms of the contract to pay this difference in price." No joke - happens all the time. Absolutely shits me. Had to twist his arm to write "Price protected" and sign his name on the contract.

Bastards :P

I was looking for a daily driver...something small, economical as i was working in the city for around 6 months. I saw an ad for a corolla, low K's, good condition. So I rang the guy and asked him how many K's it had on it....250,000. Yeah low K's, right....for the space shuttle maybe. He hung up, go figure

when looking for my daily, saw an ad for the suzuki swift s at a toyota dealership. Dealer had it for 12990. I looked at it, had marks all over the place. Airbag light was on all the time while test driving it - and their reason for airbag light on is becuase the cleaners had probably fiddled around with the airbag sensor. Offered 10500 (only cos i knew they were going to say no to it), and the guy goes to his collegue "u know what, this price is too low, lets put it up to 15k"

walked away right away.....hope the new owner is happy with the car :P

I was looking underneath the front of a car for my son's friend who has no father. Parramatta Rd has this great reputation!

This ain't a "LIE" Tale but when 2 salesmen walked up, they stood beside my legs and commented loudly enough for me to hear,

"He's looking at the wrong end." sAfrican American guffaw.

That's when I led the 2 boys outta there. :P

"have the car been involved in an accident?"

"no"

*bonnet overlapping guard one side, massive gap on the other. whole front end was a different shade of colour. bumper had missing bolts above grill, held on by 2 side bolts. cracked paint on radiator support revealing filler. under headlights had gaps big enough for birds to settle down and make a nest in*

Looked at an N15 SSS for a friend recently.

"Has this car ever been modified?"

"No."

"errrr...okay. Well it's got a painted rocker cover, pod, lowered springs."

"Has this car ever been in an accident?"

"No."

"errrr...well one entire half of the car has been resprayed and it's missing plastic trims. No thanks."

It wasn't the cheapest on the market either, unfortunately some people wouldn't read as far into things and believe the seller.

yeh i haven't had mine 33 long, went through the same process.

after looking at couple from dealers and a couple private i was going to give up. but then found an ok one.

keep looking you will find one.

best one was, has the car been serviced regularly?

yeh

look at filter, looks like its done the dakar a couple of times.

On a test drive in a 33 with leather seats...

About five min in...

Me: "What's that burning plastic smell?"

Seller: "Oh, my GF must have left the heated seats on. She's always doing that." Reaches over and flicks some loose looking switch.

Went to go have a look at a R32 GTR, booked it in for a test drive that week and they told me to come back next week so they could have time to check all the fluids brake pads, put some fuel in and make sure the car is in running order.

Went back there next week, the car was still sitting there and had not moved.

I pop the hood to have a look, Engine Temp Sensor was missing!

I could clearly see the green coolent where the sensor was missing.

I ask the mechanic who was on duty there, "Where is the Engine Temp Sensor?

*Silence* "Ah yeah! How did you know?

I can remember 2 great lies

1. When I was looking for a Stagea - looked at cheap S2. asked the owner if had been modifed and he said no it haven't. Went out to look at the car and could see a nice hole under the battery tray where piping for a FMIC went - asked the onwer again if has been modifed and still said no - looked inside the car and could see marks where gauges were and a boost controller. Took the car for a drive anyways and ran like crap (His response was its going in for service tomorrow - car was running with no boost). When the guy put the car in the garage - I could see a Greddy FMIC with piping, Drift Gauges and A-Pllar Pod and a Greddy Boost Controller sitting on the bench - I just simply ran for the hills

2. Went with a couple of mates to look at 180SX (my mate just rode his off at the time). met him at highpoint. looked at the car had a body kit on but was installed very dodgy. He said that he was taking the installer to CA to get his money back. He said that the car was A1 and never been boosted. Popped the bonnet and found a spark plug in the EGR Valve port and found a boost tee. Mate the next day took the car to RE Customs to get it checked out and all the electrics were shot. Mate offered 10k guy turned around to him and said "you won't get a car looking this for 10k". Mate walked away and ended up getting a R33 instead

looked at a r32 GTR from a dealer once, went with a mate who is a mechanic, the guy said we could it for a test drive. Before we did my mate poped the bonnet to check every thing 1st. all the pipes were just hanging on, the intercooler pipes were not connected just hanging near it not even touched the ends of the cooleer, Oil level was very low and the oil was dirty as f**k and finnaly it had no coolent. Was told all these things get fixed after i buy it so it can get a roady.

Parents brought a new car.

Picked it up......

Proceeded to be told that the car was shit and it needed the following:

- Paint protection

- Interior Leather protection

- Anti Rust Protection

My wife working for the manufacture of vehicle in the room replied. All these after market protection the dealers are selling will cause more damage to the car than the car leaving without those products. Dealer asks how my wife knew....

Wife replied I am the Automotive Engineer for that car and all testing has proven the products you are offering void factory warranty and is crap!

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways.
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.
    • Damn that was hilarious, and a bit embarrassing for skylines in general 😂 vintage car life ey. That R33 really stomped. Pretty entertaining stuff
    • Hi, I have a r32 gtr transmission. Does any of you guys have an idea how much power it will hold with the billet center plate and stock gearset? At what power level and use did yours brake with or without billet plate? Thanks, Oystein Lovik
    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
