Looking to get some track rubber but unsure which tyre to get. At the moment it is between the AZENI and Dunlop Formula R road/race types.

Azeni are cheper but not so much that they rule out the Dunlops if they are a gripier tyre. Looking for quantative answers like lap times with road rubber then road/race rubber around tracks.

At the moment im doing 2.01 at Eastern Creek and 1min 15 at Wakefield on road rubber. For the approx $1000-1200 for road/race rubber will i get a 1, 2, 3 second improvement?

OR, should i use that money to chase more hp.

Also my car has a degree of adjustment in the suspension, castor, camber, sway bars etc, would it be a waste of time stiffening up swaybars??

Interested in peoples feedback

If you're looking for someone who had tried both AZENIS and Dunlop D01Js, you might be hard pressed to find such a person mate :P

I use Dunlop D01Js on the road on my rear tyres and they are grippy as all hell... Absolutely mind-blowing levels of grip once they're warmed up... Except they're pretty nasty in the wet...

I also have a set of D01Js (front and rear on R33 GTR rims) for the track, but I haven't had a chance to try them out yet... I'll hopefully be going down to Wakefield tomorrow to give them a thrash...

From all accounts, I hear that the D01Js are quite measureably better than AZENIS.

Hi Roy,

I run Dunlop D01Js, on my second set (but cost me $1800 all up, dunno about getting em for $1200....)

They make a huge difference over my road Falkens:

Wakefield 1.16 -> 1.11

Eastern Creek 2.07 -> 2.00

Oran Park Short 57 -> 54

These are all times for a stock 33GTST

As mentioned below, you need to warm em up properly like any racing tyre - they really soften up as they get hot - almost got caught out a few times on first laps :uh-huh: I'm a huge fan of these - great value for these sort of improvements in times.

Best of all, theyre legal to drive to and from the track - full slicks (sicks?) may give a better improvement but too much trouble for me. Haven't tried Azenzis to compare.

My 2c is that suspension / tyre improvements are always the most rewarding place to start - going fast round corners is much more fun than fast down the straights......

Merli, you're brave to run them all the time, they are damn noisey and tramline like crazy (and they suck in the wet).

I don't have any other choice...

My car is making 263.8kw @ wheels, so any other tyre is useless...

I just have to drive very very slowly in the wet, and make DAMN sure I don't hit boost...

I have to order the tyres im after by friday if i want to make the EC track day on 21/11.

Im down to Dunlops D01JS or Bridgestone RE540. Price is within $150 of one another so down to grip alone. (I now have to run 17s because of 330mm discs , 17"= more $$$)

A lot of Jap cars seem to use Nitto or Bridgestone RE540, but i cant find any compound info on either the RE540 or D01JS. I know the AZENI i was looking at is 200, compared to 230 of the Falken 451 i currently run. Tyre supplier THINKS the Bridgestones are about a 60.

Could anyone out there running either D01JS or RE540 do me a huge favour and check out the sidewalls for me and tell me the tyre compound. Cant find any info in English on the web.

I bought 4x 235/45ZR17 Dunlop D01Js off them for $400 each. They supply those tyres for all the motorsport teams, so they have hundreds and HUNDREDS in stock in their shop.

No need to pre-order. I rang in the morning, and drove there that afternoon.

Yeh, ive been speaking to Sean at Gary's Motorpsort Tyres, i need 215/45/17s on the front, a size they dont keep in stock. They are also very busy with the Bathurst weekend.

Oh if only i could get my hands on a used pair from the Bathurst weekend, i imagine there is a hell of a lot of wasted rubber from these events.

I think i may go with the Bridgestones anyway, see if anyone (Merli/Duncan) want to swap one day at a track and see if they are any better/worse then the Dunlops you guys are running. A lot of the Jap feature cars seem to use the RE540s, cant be that bad.

I have used both tyres on different cars, I don't have data as they are different cars ....however,

They are so much better than azenis. They have a far higher level of grip when warm, they wear slightly quicker but are far superior on the limit too. Azenis are not really a race tyre, they were not good enough for race thats why they are available more as a road tyre, but they are useless as a road tyre as they never get warm unless you do a really hard run for 10km plus...ie up reefton spur for those of you in melbourne...and when they are cold they are less grippy than a normal good qualkity road tyre. They do however have a nice stiff sidewall and are predictable.

    • My thinking is that if the O2 sensor is shot then your entire above described experience is pure placebo.
    • Here is the mess that I made. That filler there was successful in filling dents in that area. But in the middle area. I can feel dents. And I've gone ocer it multiple times with filler. And the filler is no longer there because i accidently sanded it away. I've chased my tail on this job but this is something else lol. So I'm gonna attempt filler one more time and if it doesn't work I'll just high fill primer the door and see where the issues are because guidecoat is of no use atm.
    • Ok, so I think I sort of figured out where I went wrong. So I definitely overthinked it, and I over sanded, which is probably a large part of the problem. to fix it, I ended up tapping some spots that were likely to be high, made them low, filled them in, and I tackled small sections at a time, and it feels a lot better.    I think what confused me as well is you have the bare metal, and some spots darker and some are lighter, and when I run my finger across it, it' would feel like it's a low spot, but I think it's just a transition in different texture from metal to body filler.    When your finger's sliding on the body filler, and crosses over to the bare metal, going back and forth, it feels like it's a low spot. So I kept putting filler there and sanding, but I think it was just a transition in texture, nothing to do with the low or high spot. But the panel's feels a lot better, and I'm just going to end up priming it, and then I'll block it after with guide coat.   Ended up wasting just about all of my filler on this damn door lol  
    • -10 is plenty for running to an oil cooler. When you look at oil feeds, like power steering feeds, they're much smaller, and then just a larger hose size to move volume in less pressure. No need for -12. Even on the race cars, like Duncans, and endurance cars, most of them are all running -10 and everything works perfectly fine, temps are under control, and there's no restrictions.
    • Update: O2 sensor in my downpipe turned out to be faulty when I plugged in to the Haltech software. Was getting a "open circuit" warning. Tons of carbon buildup on it, probably from when I was running rich for a while before getting it corrected. Replaced with new unit and test drove again. The shuffle still happens, albeit far less now. I am not able to replicate it as reliably and it no longer happens at the same RPM levels as before. The only time I was able to hear it was in 5th going uphill and another time in 5th where there was no noticeable incline but applying more throttle first sped it up and then cleared it. Then once in 4th when I slightly lifted the throttle going over a bump but cleared right after. My understanding is that with the O2 sensor out, the ECU relies entirely on the MAP tune and isn't able to make its small adjustments based on the sensors reading. All in all, a big improvement, though not the silver bullet. Will try validating the actuators are set up correctly, and potentially setting up shop time to tune the boost controller on closed loop rather than the open loop it is set to now. Think if it's set up on closed loop to take the O2 reading, that should deal with these last bits. Will try to update again as I go.
