When I was on my P's I drove a 5.0lt VK V8 that had a worked motor....it flew! But i never got hassled because i didnt do stupid things in stupid places!! The only time i ever got pulled up on my P's was for cruising round the city at 1am on a friday night (never did that again)....asked if they could look under the hood....i told em it was a 4.2lt an really, unless they were gonna pull the heads off an measure the bores, there aint enough difference to tell....lol....so they looked around for 5 mins...then told me my tint was too dark an to put the P on the outside an left...lol

so you can do it, just dont do burnouts everywhere, dont cruise around at night, an if you see them round drive like a granny!! you should be right. oh an make sure you have all your lights working etc....all they need is an excuse.

ok power to weight is a pain but here is what you need to weigh up???

1st: how are the police going to prove wat KW you have? unless taking it to a dyno for you and as MSPEC said just blow the boost wright off!

2nd: if you are looking at practically any TURBO skyline you will be exceeding the power to weight ratio.

3rd: most of the GTST model skylines dont exist in the VIC ROADS book of power to weight its mainly the GTR's so unless the police no the convertion it will go by undetected.

4th: alot of ppl who get stung with power to weight are ppl who have alot of chrome and huge air pods and BOV under the hood, im not bagging these ppl but this attracts alot of unwanted attention when the copper asks you to pop your bonnet if your engine bay is neat and tidy most cops dont even know where the turbo is and will just give you a canary for to low. (no offence)

5th: and to some most important. wouldnt you prefer to be crusing a 300RWKW beast with P's on then waiting 3 years and being another one of those rich guys who dony know how to rev the thing past 3,000rpm and bought the car cause they saw it on 2 fast 2 furious?

Thats my opinion any way no offence to any one thanks.

i am off my P's now but legalities was the main reason i bought a r32gtst and not a r33gtst in the first place... but glad i did now because it looks better anyway :)

plus my other car on my P's was a NA 87 supra so there was no law-breaking at all... haven't even lost a demerit point yet :(:) :) !!

to clarify and this has been mentioned MANY times before but the 125kw/tonne rule refers to a nubmer of things:

- flywheel power as engine came out of the factory

- tare weight as car came out of hte factory

so... it doesn't matter if you have a GTR and put lead in the boot or restrict the boost if the car is illegal out of the factory then its illegal on your P's.

but this also works in your favour... if your car IS legal, then you can modify it over the limit and it doesn't matter...

it seems that many people take the risk these days but is it worth it to risk a heavy fine and loss of liscence??

(if you say yes then you have more money than sense)

you forgot the option "not on my P's anymore - but never obeyed the rules when i was" ..

Anyway, I never had a problem with it with police - got stung for everything else under the sun tho.

Does this apply to L plates too...? I drove some pretty sick cars on my L plates which would have been more dangerous than me driving the skyline on my P's.

Nope, can drive whatever you want on Ls :P ... i drive a 73 mustang... it's not super fast, but it's over the limit.

im only on my L's and managed to save enough to buy a fairly nice R33 GTS-t (not just cause ive watched Fast n furiouse too much i had an interest in Skylines a few years before).

And i have benifited from driving the car with someone beside me who keeps me under control but

i reckon aslong as you are sensible and save the speed for the track there is no issue with high powered cars and young drivers.

So is it legal or not to drive a R33 turbo on ya P's or not? i thought it was by about .5 of a kw

hey dallas, you didn't explain the other side of it as you have so many other times :D

i've heard many times that they will let you off if driving an r33 gtst

they're 187kw on 1390kg = 134.5kw/tonne... so 9.5 kW over. technically not legal, some say cops don't have the yes/no in their little book so it's ok. also heard a few people say they drive r33 gtst on Ps without probs... meh do what you want :D

It all depends on the cop. I got done last year for p/w and i wasnt doing anything wrong, just finding parking at knox. Dont ever go to knox city on ur p's if u drive a skyline. they have a TMU unit stationed there. The cops told me id have to garage my car or sell it, but if i was caught, theyd get me.

Since then ive been pulled over once more and it was non tmu, so i got off without anything, but now i try to avoid hotspots for cops at night as ive got 2 months left on p's and i cant afford to lose any more points. But i still s**t myself when i see those blue Tmu cars around and the normal TMU cars.

But like i said, it depends on the cop. If theyre in a bad mood, doesnt matter what u do, theyll get u for something. I dont drive like a dickhead and i obey road rules and it seems to be working so far. Only a couple of months to go

  • 2 months later...

hey wats up...i am turning 18 soon and would like to buy an R33 GTS-T. i've saved enough for it but was just wondering...is it considered a high powered vechile and if so...do the cops check/care if u drive one...if they do wat happens if ur caught...thanks for ur help

Hi,

I asked this same question after joining SAU and got this reply.

Power to weight is only an issue if you can't prove its the only vehicle available to you to drive in the house or that all the cars in the household are all overpowered for your license class and that its owned by someone to whom the rule dosen't apply to. Even then you'll only get a fine, no points. But owning a GTR on your P's IF you do get pulled over, expect to get an anal probe about the legalities of the car.

Also found out...

Power to weight is 125kw per tonne

    • I thought that might be the case, thats what I'll start saving for. Thanks for the info
    • Ps i found the below forum and it seems to be the same scenario Im dealing with. Going to check my ECU coolant temp wire tomorrow    From NICOclub forum: s1 RB25det flooding at start up Thu Apr 11, 2013 7:23 am I am completely lost on this. Car ran perfectly fine when I parked it at the end of the year. I took the engine out and painted the engine bay, and put a fuel cell with an inline walbro 255 instead of the in tank unit I had last year. After reinstalling everything, the engine floods when the fuel pump primes. if i pull the fuel pump fuse it'll start, and as soon as I put the fuse back in it starts running ridiculously rich. I checked the tps voltage, and its fine. Cleaned the maf as it had some dust from sitting on a shelf all winter, fuel pressure is correct while running, but wont fire until there is less than 5psi in the lines. The fuel lines are run correctly. I have found a few threads with the same problem but no actual explanation of what fixed it, the threads just ended. Any help would be appreciated. I found the problem though. There was a break in one of the ecu coolant temp sensor wires. Once it was repaired it fired right up with no problems. I would have never thought a non working coolant temp sensor would have caused such an issue.
    • Hi sorry late reply I didnt get a chance to take any pics (my mechanics on the other side of the city) but the plugs were fouled from being too rich. I noticed the MAF wasn't genuine, so I replaced it with a genuine green label unit. I also swapped in a different ignitor, but the issue remains. I've narrowed it down a bit now: - If I unplug and reconnect the fuel lines and install fresh spark plugs, the car starts right up and runs perfectly. Took it around the block with no issues - As soon as I shut it off and try to restart, it won't start again - Fuel pressure while cranking is steady around 40 psi, injectors have good spray, return line is clear, and the FPR vacuum is working. It just seems like it's getting flooded after the first start I unplugged coolant sensors to see if its related to ECU flooding but that didnt make a difference. Im thinking its related to this because this issue only started happening after fixing coolant leaks and replacing the bottom part of the stock manifolds coolant pipe. My mechanic took off the inlet to get to get to do these repairs. My mechanics actually just an old mate who's retired now so ill be taking it to a different mechanic who i know has exp with RBs to see if they find anything. If you have any ideas please send em lll give it a try. Ive tried other things like swapping the injectors, fuel rail, different fuel pressure regs, different ignitor, spark plugs, comp test and MAF but the same issue persists.
