hey guys, basically i'm looking at buying a skyline for about $30k, and by that i mean if i sold my soul i could just do it. have seen a few nice r33 gtr's for around this price and lower and also a few modified r34's. my question is which one to go with. the ones i'm looking at all have around 200-300awkw, and a few suspension mods. i gather that in standard form the r33 will way out perform the r34, but do the mods negate this? i'm not really concened with looks (they both look awesome), mainly after performance. figure you guys are the experts, any thoughts?

has been posted countless times.. also they are totally different in performance..

also if you are only just goona be able to get one.. don't bother till you have money for maintenance, insurance, etc.. and why does your profile say you've got a r33 gtr already?

had a 33 lined up but a few problems came up. and i have allowed for $1500 for insurance, $1500 for stamp duty, etc, etc. could someone just put a link up to a relevant thread, and when i searched i found that the threads i could find referred to unmodified cars. i want an unmodified comparison, cheers

stock for stock GTR wins hands down.. without a doubt..

can pick up an unmodified GTT for 20k or so.. can get a stock 33GTR for 22-30k around abouts.. i personally would be looking carefully at ones under 25k..

if you are after modified cars.. depends what mods and cannot be compared.. test drive some and see what you prefer

i noticed i made an error in my first post (way to join the forum huh), i am after a modified car. i guess my main concerns are these;

1) can the r34 engine handle 300ish kw atw without major internal work?

2) does the r34 handle as well as the r33 if both have the same suspension, etc. (as in does the chassis make that big a difference?)

3) is it too much power for a rear wheel drive car on the road?

4) before major work (forged pistons, conrods, etc), how much pressure can each engine run, as in is 20psi way too much?

at the end of the day, both caqrs would be an absolute blast but as much as i want a high performing car, i dont want to be paying through the nose if i need to replace a blown motor. and yes it must be that powerful, the car needs to be able to give a similar thrill to the bike or i just find them uninspiring, figure if i'm going to spend 30k that i should love it right.

YES

NO the GTR will go around a corner faster but mostly due to it being awd not the chassis as far as I know

I think thats a personal thing, but obviously the GTR will be more streetable at that power level

Engine life is not based solely on boost pressure. 20psi from a 400hp turbo is a lot different to 20psi from an 800hp turbo.

Answers above. You might think I dont like GTTs but I have one and love it. But I also know how it compares to my mates GTR. Quite different cars.

From your questions regarding handling, streetability and minimum mods the GTR is your answer. I really like the R34 shape plus the R33 GTR is a good 8-12k more expensive. Hope that helps.

Good work. Do you mind saying what is the 10k brakes and suspension? Buying one with this stuff already done is a huge time and money saver

Now please read all the "i just bought a GTR, what should i do" threads for basic ways to prolong healthy engine life and preventative maintenance etc.

Here's the very basics;

Dont run the stock ceramic turbos at more than 1bar (regardless of what your car has, im typing this for future people who are searching)

Filling the oil to the bottom of the hump on the dipstick is smart before any trackdays/thrashing

Dont do a high rpm launch (the sort you go "whoooooa" on youtube at) with the steering pointing anywhere but straight

If the stock gearbox gets crunchy, fill it with Redline Shockproof (or smurfs blood as everyone calls it)

Always warm it up before a flogging (this should be common sense). Go on OIL TEMP not water temp.

my view was that the r34 looks and felt way better, but at the end of the day i'm more of a performance junkie. N1GTR, i have no idea exactly what the suspension and brake work that's been done is but will get the receipts for the work when i pick it up and will let you know. and the engine is nowhere near stock, the guy was building it up with about 500 kw atw in mind. the engine is strong and so is the gearbox (does cryogenic freezing and cutting make a big difference?), apparently at this stage all i'd need to push out more power is initially upgrade the feul pump/rails/whatever (again not stock but not able to take more than 400kw), and then look at engine internals, the rest of the car is ready.

when i've got everything, i'd really appreciate it if i could put up a list of mods and have you guys tell me what would be safe boost, driving style and maintenance things that i should keep in mind,

on a side note to coming off at 120, had a VERY close call today on the r1 coming out of a 3rd gear corner somewhere near 200kph, small moist bit of ground and the rear spun up a little more than i would have liked, managed to get it back through a nice mix of arse and luck...

    • Shouldn't need a "base map" for anything other than guidance to ignition tuning. You just need the engine capacity right, the injector size right, and something, almost anything, for a VE map. On an NA engine, fuelling is almost completely a function of load signal & rpm. It should run and drive with a completely flat fuel map. It will be too lean under load, but that's easily fixed. We used to tune all ECUs without any base map. There were no such things (until someone had tuned a near stock engine on one, and then they had a "base map".
    • What did you actually buy/how much did it cost? When I got mine in like.. 2017...? 2019? the aim was to run Torque for gauges via ODB2 and things like Track Addict/Laptimers/Dashcam/Reversecam/Spotify etc. Mine never broke, but I wonder if you've got the same needs (it sounds like it). Cause I liked the idea of being able to do anything with it. That said, yours also cost 3x the cost of what I spent so... food for thought.  
    • For me there is a massive difference in manufacturer or big brand crippled android (Sony, Kenwood etc) vs the sort of thing I've installed here, which is basically just a tablet in DIN form factor with open Android, and the other model of course is mirroring - Android Auto/Carplay. I hate the locked down manufacturer and AA options where they decide what apps I'm allowed to install, including the Launcher but also importantly things like Ecutek (for this car) or Real Dash (Stagea) are not supported. Plus those crippled versions tend to be slower due to both overheads and lower spec hardware. On the other hand, when this breaks I'll likely be in trouble for support....but how is that different to owning an Infiniti anyway
    • Yeah, Duncan is helping sell me back to Android devices. I've hated the whole Android head units due to their speed issues. Even in my old Hyundai Kona (2022 model), it behind the scenes was Android, and slow and shitty to start up. Once running wasn't bad, but still a good 15 to 30 seconds.
    • My roof rails are off atm on the E39 until the rust is fixed. I did find another little bit of surface rust under the rails when I took them off. As @soviet_merlin said I'd just leave them alone unless you're planning on ensuring they're properly sealed. I was on the fence about leaving them off as the delete is still a thing in BMW E39's but I feel like the car is missing something (er, it is, der) with them off and I'm looking forward to putting them back on.
