not really sure on whether it would work or not, but i'll say it anyway. couldn't you just make a mould of it now and then just make plugs of it out of fibreglass (possibly adding a tint to the gel coat to make it black) and once you pull it out of the mold simply put the carbon cloth over the top. if you were planning on make more of them then that's how i'd do it. that way you don't have to be very fussy about how the fibrglass is laid down, etc as it is hidden by the gel coat, and you also would have a smooth layer to put the carbon cloth over.

i was also interested to see that you put the fibreglass on in big sheets at a time. my father in law used to work making fibreglass mudguards, etc for ford F trucks and they used to cut the fibrglass up into smaller pieces, dip them in the resin and then lay them on the gel coat. i think this was because they would just do the whole thing in 1 hit, get it a few layers thick and then let it set. they also used to have it bombed up with hardener so it would go off pretty quick. they used to have it weak so it took longer to go off but then the rep from the company they got all the fibreglass and stuff from came through one day while they were doing a set and told them to make it stronger. he mixed it all up for them and helped them do it all and they turned out good and that's how they've done it ever since.

Pez, well done. You followed an idea and the outcomes is a credit to you for DIY. From this, I'll make a blank for fabrication of my mods. Plan on making a front splitter for when my build hits the track (track only splitter). Using input from Nascar tips and recent 2010 Superlap, there's some excellent aero to be put into a car, not all of it has to be hi-tech.

Two thumbs up for effort and styling ... perfect off-finish carbon would be hard to do first time around.

That looks fantastic. I was going to simply make my parts out of fibreglass and paint it all, but after seeing this, I feel confident enough to add a bit of carbon to my car. Well done.

So this is for looks only? At the start of the thread I thought "ok the wood is to mould the cf", but now it's part of it, wtf? How much does the thing weigh? Isn't the point of cf so parts can be replicated at an ultra light weight? Seems like a waste of time to me, kudos for the effort though.

read the thread, the wood is for modelling only. I pulled the part off of the wood. I did wood so I can make another any time I need it. The part weighs less than a couple of kg, you can literally balance it on two fingers.

Awesome work, was going to ask you to do something about my front lip as I was going to carbon-wallpaper it if anyone can do it!

Awsome effort mate especially for a first attempt. Would be very interested to see version 2.0 if the first attempt looks this good i think you would be able to do something pretty special for the next version andf the design looks good will be keeping an eye out for your next version.

Hey mate well done I've been keeping an eye on this thread and the finished product looks fantastic. 10/10 for effort I've done a bit of fiberglassing before and it's damn hard work I made a front lip for my old gtst but I've now started a similar design to yours for my 32 gtr. Once again looks awesome keep up the good work.

that thing must weigh a tonne! would it be better to just buy a fiber glass lip? i can see it snapping off the plastic front bar after a few nasty bumps :D

with labour min $800

but nice DIY at home if you haev the time.

    • Just don't use ChatGPT or any other artificial stupidity for the equivalent of googling. Their demonstrated inability to discriminate reality from hallucination should be enough to make them totally untrusted. LLMs don't know anything and cannot think to even the smallest extent. They are just predictors of the next word, and that should never be confused with capability.
    • I think, given the usage model described in the OP, I'd never ever experience the wonders of the 400kW upgrade. What I really need is boost from 2000rpm and probably no more than 260-270rwkW. But I suspect that the highflow is not actually the turbo for that purpose, so I may in fact need to get a G25 or 30 or something right sized and very spooly. We shall see after it is tuned. I've had to back the boost and boost ramp off to stop the thing from pinging since the highflow went on, so I've been almost living the NA life for 9 months now! Injectors are recently in hand. AFM is in hand. Dyno is fixed. Just need to clear a queue of f**king Supras out of the way (and probably fit my new gearbox). So....some time this year? Lol.
    • For what I gather is a Sunday/summer car....braided is fine. You're not going to be left without a vehicle and you have plenty of time for inspection/maintenance. Oof. I wouldn't use them that way. They can probably handle the temperature** but the internal corrugations means that their flow characteristics are a bit shit. Lots of extra friction and pressure loss. Makes them flow like the next pipe size down. ** They are stainless, and the stainless can usually be at least something like 304L, which is pretty good at higher temperatures (unlike 316L, which I would use for a wrt/corrosive environment, but not a particularly hot environment). But the welding needs to be top notch. And even then, because you usually need at least one cone-seat end on them (because you can twist the hose and do up both ends at the same time unless one of them is a union) they can be prone to coming loose with heat cycles.
    • I don't have the OEM oil feed lines though and the turbo-wraparound line is torn, only has water. My plan is to get replacements for these and just connect a braided line to there. And make sure it's leak free. Hoses like these are also sometimes used to connect external wastegates, so for an EGR I think you're good using them.
    • Alright I understand. The most likely case is probably gonna be that I just keep the OEM unit in the car as long as it works.
