Hi Guys,

Im putting the finishing touches on detailing my R34 gtr and want to polish the paint behind the oval Skyline and GTR badges on the boot. The badges seem to be glued on though so removing them will probably damage the paint and the badge.

Does anyone have a good trick for polishing the paint that is visible through the badges, or removing them safely so the boot can be evenly polished and the badges then re-mounted?

Also, does anyone have some recommendations for polishing the glass, particularly in removing water scale marks from the corners of the glass?

Cheers,

Ian

for the gtr badge and the "skyline" on the boot (alot of crap gets caught in the corners) get a fine blade flat screwdriver, put a microfibre cloth over it and "lightly" dig it out. It wont hurt the paint. I have done it many times on my own GTR.

use fishing line, and a hairdryer. heat the glue and then SLOWLY "saw" the line under the badge. im pretty sure that the boot badge doesn't have tabs, but be careful as the have little plastic bits actually inserted into the panel. the GT badges on the front quarter of r33's do. then use prepsol on the glueresidue thats left and polish as normal. DONT risk the screwdriver.

hit up the final inspection forums. forums.finalinspection.com.au - damian removes badges all the time on his clients cars. Definitely have a hairdryer handy.

not sure what product you need to stick it back on

Water marks on glass are a tricky one. At our windscreen shop we have a custom blend the boss' dad made of chemicals, acids, etc.

We rub it on, wait a minute, then hose it off. Some glasses come out spotless. Others, like my skyline, come out looking no different. Bitchin'

And if you leave it on too long before hosing it it'll eat in and give the glass a permanent 'foggy' look. Thankfully I found that out on my wing mirror and simply cut a new one.

I have a feeling it varies widely with

a) Time the marks have been there

b) City of origin hence type of horrible chemical in their rain

Oh and all badges are attached with quality double-sided tape. Just clean both parts with prepsol and use a reputable brand, I've found 3M very good.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I think im going to go with the badge removal approach once I source some 3M tape. While using a tooth brush and a plastic screw driver on a rag got it a bit cleaner, but only complete removal is going to get it 100%.

As for the glass, ive had good success doing the large area's with a wool polishing mop and a good cut and polish compound. I was thinking of trying a mini polishing mop on a die grinder to get into the corners, provided I can find one that is. I dont like the idea of acid too much. Sounds like a great way to start corrosion wherever I would accidenty spill it.

Yeah the rear boot badge has no locator pins like the front gt badges.. just double side tape.. prepsol will remove the glue residue but if there were any other ways of getting around this problem apart from pulling the badge off i would definantly try that..

Cheers Kingy

Hey Mate,

In regards to the marks on your glass I only picked up my car 2 months ago and had the same problem, I used Autosol Metal Polish... It's def something I hope I never have to do again. But came up well..

Thanks for the tip, autosol sounds like the go as its a little abrasive too.

Funly enough after spending about 3 days polishing paint I cant rightly put the old badges back on the car as they dont look good enough. Going to have to buy some new ones, so that solves the adhesive issue at the same time.

Cheers,

Ian

Glass - use Cut & Polish or some buffing cutting compound and polish it off with a cloth. Will take some time and energy but works a treat everytime.

Between Badges - screw driver wrapped in cloth, use cut and polish to clean. I did and it worked. If you are as finicky as I am you will get to the real hard bits and come out clean. Be careful to check the end of screwdriver often to make sure the metal hasn't pierced through the cloth.

Good luck.

I did the same on my R34 gtr.

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
