car audio installers (not auto electricians!)

auto engineers

that's "AFTER BUILD" professions... not like... before build professions.. and mind you this is thinking back of clients we had when i worked at Capricorn Society... (these people would be great to give a call - they're a plethora of info on this subject!)

then there's designers, etc...

The moolah is in senior management or proprietorship. The owner carries much risk.

Middle management > service advisor > technician > apprentice are all underpaid.

Engine builds? The future?

Thanks Guys,

I was thinking of going into engine rebuilding but from what I can find there is bugger all money in it. Can anyone clear this up?

Thanks.

99% of the auto careers have bugger all pay. you are just a general labourer basically. if you love cars and want more money and want a trade, go into the building industry. if you speak to a lot of mechanics they will tell you that working on cars as a job ruins their love of cars, because then spend all day doing it at work so they don't want to do it when they get home.

Building industry for sure, I spend all day working with timber and steal, and soon as I get home I can play mechanic all nite and weekend, plus the pays good, the hours are great most building sites shut at 330pm so u got all arvo to do what u need to do/ goto the shops or what ever. And there's always plenty of work

Yeah I have to agree with some of the others, if your looking at a trade, building & construction is where the money is at. I have a degree, and have worked as a professional scientist and project manager and if I had to do it again at the start I would have been a sparky or something. I am often out on the field supervising trades people taking on the stress, running and organising projects, all the while nearly all the trades people (contractors) are getting paid more than me, a lot more than me in some cases.

I also was thinking of working as a mechanic when I was younger. I worked with my cousin at his workshop for some experience, while I enjoyed it as it was new to me, he was always talking me out of it for similar reasons as others have said (pay being one of the main one, and loss of passion for cars). However, saying that, If I was to become a mechanic I would try and work my way to being a tuner / engine builder working at a reputable performance workshop maybe aiming have my own business one day. At least that way even if you aren't getting paid so well, you would be working on nicer cars doing more interesting and challenging work. Its just a shame that the mechanic trade doesn't pay anywhere near the same as other trades. At the end of the day do you want to be the guy working on the R34 GTR or the guy who owns it?

Best of luck with your decision.

i am a mechanic by trade but i now work in the mining sector as a mechanical fitter, a mechanics car is the worst maintained vehicle out there. you very quickly lose all interest in your toys when you have to work on others all day. Up side is tho if you become a mechanic you gain a lot of friends that you never knew you had

:P

...and what happens to your friends if you sprain your wrist?

Silly Q... You talk them through it right?

Do you help maidens in distress along the motorways?

    • Sorry to hear your HFM BM57 was faulty,  did you contact HFM I would hope they would be at least grateful for the information if there was some sort of manufacturing fault, you would hope they would be sympathetic even if your item was 2 years old if it had never been fitted. May I ask where it leaked from ?
    • Cats are called Bella, and Donna...  Like that poisonous plant And I remember your 2 monsters, I remember making a little bit of wee when you let them out... LOL I have already installed cat doors into the laundry where their kitty litter is, and the sun room, apart from the cat doors there's not going to be any permanent mounted stuff on the interior walls (interior doors are cheap and easy to replace) I will get a outdoor cat cage thingie once I finish the landscaping out back... https://catnip.com.au/ The only off limit areas are the main bedroom and the gym room....but, currently the cats are curled up in bed, in the main bedroom with the Mrs.....LOL, the off limits for the kittens to the main bedroom lasted about 5 minutes with Jackie I currently only have 1 free standing huge cat tree multiple level scratching post thingie in the lounge room, but, I will be getting another one soon now that I'm happy with the furniture layout in the back room and have a perfect spot for it
    • All of this is making it seem clear that running the Coppermix twin was definitely the way to go, especially in hindsight with how insane tariffs have gotten and the strength of the USD vs yen at the time.
    • That sounds like no chance of even importing one for road registering then Now I see why Duncan wants to check LHD rules for Targa...   I wonder how "bolt in" the AWD would be if you got one imported from the US and swapped it to an AUD one
    • Not to mention they drive like a bucket of bolts! yuck!
