Just had paint correction done on my R34 by one of the boys at work who is obsessed about swirl free paint finishes & details cars on the weekends.

Some pics of the car when i dropped it off in the morning.

After handing the car back to me, he nearly had a heart attack when i told him that I normally use amorol carwash & a sponge to wash the car!!

He recommended that I use meguiars NXT wash, microfibre wash mitts & microfibre waffle weave cloths to wash & dry the car to keep it swirl free.

Overall i'm very happy with the end result & would recommend his services to anyone wanting to restore depth & clarity back into their paint finish. He's a true enthusiast that takes great pride in his work.

Sooooo you washed your car..... Interesting....

Considering the state it was in, yes it is.

However, a lot of those pics look like the car has had dirty water on it, and the water has dried leaving dirt there. Could have been better with a wash before you gave it to him.

The paint work came out really good though, mate. How much for a polish like this by your friend to the average punter who doesn't have the benefits of mates rates?

Black 34 = sex

Glad you're happy Robbie and getting some good advice.

Some Japanese owners have no idea about how to take care of their paintwork (esp in black) despite attempting to cover it from petrochemical pollutants, SO2/SO3/Rain. Some even treat their wheels like sh/t.

I must add though that many Aussie enthusiasts are super keen to maintain the look of their cars! :P

Sooooo you are a comedian....... also interesting.....

maybe you should keep your comments to yourself champ. if you had half a brain or half a life you wouldnt be writing stupid things up on somebody elses post!!!!!

By the way to those that appreciate forum members sharing their experiences so that we can all get the best for our cars I paid $300 & after seeing the final result, it was worth every cent. I have spoken to him & this price is for SAU forum members as well.

Here's a list of what was done for $300:

Foam gun soak with detergent for 5mins

Wash with Meguiar’s NXT

Clay with Meguiar’s Claybar

Meguiar's M105 Ultra Cut compound with LC orange foam cutting pad using a Dual Action (DA) polisher

Meguiar's M205 Ultra finishing polish with LC white polishing pad using a DA polisher

Meguiar's NXT Tech Wax 2.0, with LC black finishing pad using a DA polisher

Meguiar's Hot Rims All-Wheel Cleaner

Meguiar's NXT Insane Shine Tire Spray

Meguiar's NXT Metal Polish for wheels, exhaust & intercooler piping

p.s a lot of those hard water spots came with the car when it was imported. I couldn't get them out by normal washing as you can see on the 50/50 fender shot.

car looks good mate  now watch it become dirty again in a few days (damn black cars...) :)

$300 is a pretty good price. the headlights came up really well.

i've paid $400 for a detail on my car once and there were still some swirls in parts of the paint so wasn't very happy about that.

That is a great result for an awesome price. $300 for a finish like that, worth every penny!

Also good tips on what products to use for future maintanence. Question, what is a dual action polisher? I just have a super cheap random orbital buffer, is that not good enough? And did you have any issues with water stains on the windows and how were they removed?

Cheers,

Chris

thanks mate,

yeh it honestly came up sparkling and with no swirls. Ive given my car a few DIY details before and its come out clean but when i picked it up from him I was genuinely shocked!!! it was like a black diamond. even got rid of alot of surface scratches.

I think the trick to keeping swirls off is also in the washing post detailing. Th3e microfibre cloths and all that really help maintain the shine.

even when the cars dirty it shines like crazy LOL

Hey dude,

just asked the guy at work and he told me a long explanation on all of this so i just got him to type it up for me. lol

Dual action means that the polishing head both orbits and rotates at the same time.

Here's a diagram to explain it:

dual-action.jpg

The super cheap one might not have enough power to spin the pad under load to perform paint correction. A great machine is the Bosch GEX150T.

I had a few issues with water stains on the windows, but they weren't that bad & cleaned up OK with a vinegar & water mix. Really bad water spotting on windows might need a rotary polisher & cutting pad.

hope that helps

Got a question sorry don't mean to revive a 2 month old thread but where did you get the Meguiar's M105 Ultra Cut compound & Meguiar's M205 Ultra finishing polish from? i rang autobarn and supercheap but they don't seem to stock it i believe its an America only product? anywhere i can buy it at a store or online for a good price?

Man it will be interesting to see if it lasts. I had a black S15 that had the same hard water stains on it, and i had it polished out by a supposed gun detailer - does all the work for a BMW/Range Rover dealer. Looked amazing like you would not believe when he was finished, lasted 2 weeks before the worst looking swirls i have ever seen in my life began to surface. The car looked milky, i was soooo shitty that i eventually sold it...

^ fillers. The detailers for the high end luxo marques are notorious for their shoddy work. It looked great initially, until you washed all the fillers away.

looks like the guy used a thorough detailing process, good find to get someone who knows what they're doing. So many hack detailers out there.

DarkRyda, should be able to pick up that stuff relatively easily over the net - there's pretty much nothing you can buy from supercheap/autobarn that is decent to use on your car.

if you have trouble get the Megs stuff and want to jump up a bit, i'd HIGHLY recommend Final Inspections new polish range. CAP Medium and CAP Ultra fine (jewellers rouge)

for those looking for a great dual action (also known as forced rotation) machines, Festool make the best ones, 125 and 150 rotex. But IMO, there Bosch GEX150T for around $360 at bunnings is just as good for half the price. Fantastic unit.

Seen the FI stuff im a member of the FI forum, i have found where to get the Megs polish's problem is there around $85 each bottle not cheap just wondering is the FI stuff better than the Megs M105/M205? only thing i buy from autobarn would be the Megs NTX 2.0 Wax & Megs Clay Bar, Wax is good im yet to try out the claybar out probs should have gone the 3M claybar instead.

old post but yes, FI CAP range of polishes is ridiculous. I was a staunch Menzerna supporter but CAP is a cut above.

But really, for the CAP range you'll need a machine and pads, you could try CAP Medium by hand, but it will be a shiteload amount of work.

    • So stock ECU does not like anything above 10 psi?  That Nistune one is just for "try" if it will be any different, I know it need to be tune for that. I know but YOU may know about these problem but i/we dont. They few little Skylines here let alone people who know anything about tham so that is why iam asking here
    • So now we have a radiator with no attachments whatsoever. It lifts up with a particularly tight spot between the drivers side air box mount and the lower radiator outlet, but if you've got this far you will sort that too. This is the lower mounts with the rad out so you can see where the rubber bushes go, it is a straight shot upwards Done! Assembly is the reverse of disassembly, with blood less likely to be shed.
    • Right, onto the second last trick. The Air Con condenser is mounted to the front of the radiator and stays in the car when the radiator is removed. There are 2x 10mm headed self tappers holding the top of the condenser to the radiator, remove those The bottom of the condenser is attached to the radiator with clips. You need to lift the condenser out of those clips and clear (up, then forward). f**ked if  could work out how to do that last bit with the front bumper on. I hope you can, and you share the trick.  Bumper removal probably deserves its own thread one day once I've recovered the will to live, but basically you need to remove the wheels, front inner guard liners (clips and 10mm headed bolts), the self tapper between the guard and the bumper at the rearmost point of the bumper (same as an R32 that bit), any remaining clips at the top/front of the grill, an absolute bastard design with a plate that holds the top of the bumper above the headlight each side (only 1 bolt which is tricky to get to, but the plate catches 2 places on the bumper and must be removed....carefully!) and push clips between the bumper and guard under the headlight. If you've done all that you will be faced with wiring for the fog lights on both sides and in ADM Q50 RS at least, 4 nasty tight plugs on the driver's side for the ADAS stuff. So, the clips at the bottom look like this on drivers side (looking from the front) And on the passenger side (also from the front), you can see this one is already out Clearance on both of these are super tight; the condenser needs to move up but the upper rad support mount prevents that, and the radiator can't move down far because it is (rubber) mounted. Once you achieve the impossible and drop the condenser off those mounts so it does not stop the rad moving, you are good to go
    • OK, next the shroud needs to come off and there are a couple of tricks. Firstly, there is a loom from near the passenger side headlight to the fans, coolant temp sensor etc and there is no plug to undo.  In my case I was OK to leave the shroud on top of the engine so I just undid the passenger side fan plug and about 10 of the clips which gave enough free wire to put it aside. The fan plugs were super tight, the trick I used was a small falt screwdriver to push down on the release tab, then a larger flat screwdriver to lever the plug out of the fan unit....be careful with how much force you apply! If you need to remove the shroud altogether for some reason you will have to deal with all the plugs (tight) and clips (brittle)....good luck. I removed all of the clips and replaced them with cable ties that I will just cut next time. Also, in the Red Sport / 400R at least, the intake heat exchanger reservoir hose is bolted to the shroud in 2 places with 10mm headed bolts; so remove them (the hose stays in the car; no need to undo it at the t fittings down at the radiator lower mount. Once you've dealt with the HX hose and the wiring loom, there are 3x 10mm headed self tappers holding the top of the shroud to the radiator; remove those.   The shroud then lifts out of the bottom mounts where it sits on the radiator, up and onto the engine out of the way. Simples
