Tips needed for my photochop project

Hi All,

Excuse my newbie-ness in here, any advice appreciated.

My project is changing the colour (black-> yellow), wheels, signage on a car.

I've tried to work through the colour change sticky but unfortunately the screenshots are now missing, and I'm not clear on how to use some of the tools.

So instead, what I have done so far is:

* Take original pic, manually select the outline of the car using a combination of the magic wand and the lasso.

* Copy the pic to a new image.

* Invert it (sucks, but I started with a black car)

* Add a colour adjustment layer with the opposite (kinda) of the yellow I want.

* Copy it all and put it back in the original image.

* Invert the layer I just pasted so it does go yellow.

* Move it intot he corect place over the old car image.

* Add layers for each wheel, text on signage.

Anyway, original and result are below, obviously it does not look at all realistic.

black is the hardest to change ... especially to yellow.

i saw a realistic black to red tutorial but no yellow :
