[Closed] Borg Warner Efr Series Turbos

I was just recently emailing you and Jon i ended up finding a 1.05 locally however i still need to order the manifold and gates.

what's the lowest boost/power the 38's would be without creeping?

Am chasing somewhere around 700hp however being able to turn the wick down a little would be good.

Also on the gate springs, stock is .5bar does this mean minimum boost will be 1 bar? since there is two gates?

Nope, if each gate cracks at around .5bar then you just have 38mm x2 opening at .5bar - I would be surprised if they could hold that turbo at .5bar though :)

glad to hear you found an external-WG EFR turbo locally - we only have the EFR Internal-WG models in stock right now. On my RB26 i was running 8374 1.05 a/r with twin 38mm, 1 bar springs. on WG pressure only no problem holding a steady 17psi and with BCSV duty cycle at 100% i ran it to 32-33psi for 704whp (through a high flow cat). here is a short video:

correct - 0.5 bar is 0.5 bar whether there is 1 or 2 wastegates (or more)

I would be surprised if they could hold that turbo at .5bar though :)

i have not seen any severe boost creeping EFR turbos, especially good to see on the internal WG variants!

Has anyone wired up the turbo speed sensor yet?

I have a Racepak IQ3 dash and wonder if anyone know what module I will need for the turbo speed sensor.

Haltech recommended 220-VP-TURBORPM which has vnet module + sensor but the extra sensor won't be needed.

I searched around and found these 2 v-net modules may work

-230-VM-USM

-230-VM-TURBO SPEED MODULE (USE WITH 800-SS-SPEED)

Has anyone tried these?

How do you guys running the EFR turbos find the boost recoveries between shifts compaired to similar turbos in the garrett range??

Hi Geoff , is the production EFR 7163 out yet ? I think quite a few are looking forward to this one ..

Is there enough evidence to suggest the EFR7163 was a successful concept? I've not seen enough testing to draw an opinion on it, and if it is released does that mean it will replace the 7064? Having both seems strange

Lol both within 1mm OD. Its probably a revision as 1mm on a comp wheel normally won't change much. It likely was done to remove confusion for the older model and anyone who ended up with one.

More signs of afterthought changes rather than pure bred success.

Um no , the EFR 7163 will be the largest of the small series EFRs and it uses a different style of turbine - called mixed flow or something of that nature .

I believe the compressor and turbine housings will be the same as it's three smaller brothers but the wheels are different . There are a couple of prototypes floating around for development but the production units are due out very soon .

This is a link to Fullrace and shows a table of the EFR range , the new EFR7163 will be next after the 500 hp 6758 in that table and its aimed at making a broad spread of power in a compact size for that power range . You'd think same or better response/power than the bulkier 7064 otherwise why would they bother ?

It's just a shame there is no "T3" flanged twin scroll IW turbine housing for them .

Let us know how you get on with this, I have a EFR with the turbo speed sensor and a IQ3 Display Dash, I've got the Speed Sensor wired to the ViPec but it would be nice to display it.

P.S, Have you managed to get Speed and Odo running on your IQ3, or do you have a IQ3 Logger Dash?

I know of someone that tuned a car with a 6758 and really liked it , they also I think played with a prototype 7163 and it was good as well . I'm told EFRs are generally wide ranging things and I believe they are aiming at compact though they don't look that compact to me turbine housing wise . I think it's difficult to make IW particularly TS IW turbine housings reasonably short and have the waste paths flow well enough . Garrett and Mitsubishi have done it but not with clockwise rotation "T3" flanged turbos .

Sadly there is a market for T3 flanged TS IW turbine housings but not much is being done about it .

Hate to say it but I think single scroll and VATN will be the reality once the moving vane assembly becomes reliable on petrol engines .

Meanwhile I am interested in EFR 7163s but I don't see one on my car .

Really? What makes you think this?

The R33 is one of the only cars that comes to mind which has a T3 split pulse design and it requires machine work to make it even work as described. Its missing a fairly large part of the splitter toward the turbine entry, and I do not think Nissan ever intended it to have a split pulse purpose but rather just good flow into the turbine housing.

Furthermore, I see a T3 twin scroll as nothing but a hindrance for manifold production, as everything gets smaller and harder to work with 6 pipes going into 2 tiny tubes.

Am unsure there is a market as you say. Cannot help but sense some form of motive in play.

BW's ETA last year at SEMA and PRI was Q3 2013... we will see what happens but it sounds like sept (maybe? lol). I know everyone hates waiting but the EFR supply is improving. We're seeing product come in, 8374 twinscroll iwg, t3 iwg, and some 9180s coming through also. Twin RB guys 6258 and 6758 are popular but arriving also

the 7163 is the largest of the B1 frame turbos and will eventually be available in vband inlet/outlet singlescroll and 0.80 a/r T4 twinscroll configuration. The initial 7163 prototypes were all excellent performers and the production units underwent further development and improvements. it is only a 2.5" inlet and 2" outlet so its not for everyone, but it does have some unique features

the 7064 is the smallest of the B2 frame turbos, and available as t4 twinscroll or t3 singlescroll. I agree there is some overlap here but both are excellent turbos and serve different levels of exhaust flow... For engines that needs more turbine flow this 7064 does that (64mm turbine and 0.92 or 1.05 a/r). We have a professional RB25 drift competitor in the us doing great on that turbo.
