sorry dale I don't like to post dyno graphs, as my tuner ramps the car up different to avoid horrible wheel spin and the graph seems laggy if that makes any sense 2 you? so dnt want to start a shit fight.

but on the road it comes on a lot sooner then what the graph shows.

and old tune was actually 442 at 22psi. now 485 at 22 lost around 30hp in mid at 4500rpm but obviousily gained 40hp up top. pickup car this morning so see how it drives soon.

peak power went from 6600rpm to 7200rpm

hey i've had a search of this thread and googled but didn't find what I'm after, most of it seemed to be about the rb20.

I have an r33, daily driver auto on stock ecu and stock engine, and it's staying that way, although an safc neo ready to touch up the tune a little once the turbo side sorted. Usual 3in exhaust, hiflow cat, fmic, metal intake mods. I've been looking at the TD05 18g with 10cm housing and antisurge cover here

what are people's thoughts on this on the rb25 and running around 13-14 psi? Like I say not looking to change engine or ecu or run any high boost so don't need anything that will flow more than what I need, really after response (esp being an auto) and a turbo the 'right' size rather than room to make more power I'll never end up using.

I notice it's also about $70 cheaper from the kinugawa website rather than ebay, is that a marketing thing, or any catch there?

also the bullet-nuts they sell, while prob not a big difference it does look like it would be better aerodynamically (and they look sweeeet)....people's thoughts on those, and use aluminium or steel?

More the fact that the airflow characteristics - mass throughput - will likely be very different to what the OEM turbo does. So fuelling and ignition changes are needed to suit.

The age old problem with the OEM ecu of hitting rich/retard will also raise its head. Simply adding a FMIC, free flowing pod inlet, and 3 inch exhaust can be enough to give problems in that area.

Nistune could be your answer.

TD05 18G could be a reasonably good match but the HG options seem to have been proven a very good match. No reason to ignore the Kando unit though.

Thanks Dale. I do have the safc neo but of course more just for tweaking rather than redoing the tune. So plenty of ppl seem to run hiflows ok on stock ecu, guess the td05 is a different story tho. Pity, cause these are such a great price! And so much good feedback on their product.

If you can modify fuelling and ignition with the SAFC then that should do the job nicely.

You can't - S-AFC just modifies the load signal from the AFM.

In other news, local drags next weekend finally - looking forward to seeing how my mates S14 Silvia goes with the antisurge 16G setup, getting some ETs and trap speeds should clear up any dyno difference doubts. It will be running 19psi on E85.

Awesome, good luck. I'll be lying if I said I wouldn't be disappointed if it went under 115mph, but it's really hard to say beyond there - it's got a really difficult to "read" seat of pants feel, its surprisingly quick though. I'd kindof like to see around 120mph, but realistically anywhere between 115-120 would be well respectable for such a basic setup I reckon.

All the SAFC does is intercept the AFM signal and move it up or down, with this your fuelling may change but so will your ignition timing as the ECU will think you are under less or more load dependant on tune. Funnily enough though i have a Super Ignition timing converter for sale that could work very well for you ;):P

LOL I guess we can talk about ECU's after the worst happens, if you prefer.

The general consensus on anti-surge is that you don't need or want it. Factual evidence to its pro's and con's are not readily available, but I believe the aforementioned is the opinion of most.

Be it myself I would be confident that a TD05H 18G 10cm would not necessitate an antisurge housing on an RB25. However, it should be noted that while an 18G flows a few pound less than a 20G, an EVO 3 spec 16G6 flows only 1lb/min (10hp rule of thumb) than a 20G, and is a perfect match for the TD05H turbine.

SO, again, be it myself I would be opting for the below unit in a 10cm (RB25, use 8 for 20) as the replacement to a highflow:

Wanting to get some advice on internal or external gates if someone could spare a few minutes.

Have just had my RB20 tuned with the following:

Stock RB20 internals

Z32 AFM

Bosch 630cc Injectors

Walbro Fuel Pump

PowerFC

GTR V-Spec II Coil Packs

Standard exhaust manifold

Chinese front facing plenum, standard runners

Generic looking FMIC

3" exhaust, pod filter

Kunigawa TD05-18G Anti Surge, internally gated.

15psi spring (I think)

Turbo Smart bleed valve

The problem I have is that it shoots to 15psi pretty quickly, then it sort of sits there for a bit until around 6 - 6500rpm then goes to 19psi. It just seems like the IG isn't really doing its' job, is it going to be worth spending the $500 or so it will cost to go external gate?

The external gate does more than just control the boost though, it also flows better in the top end improving power/torque output. It's a great mod if done correctly, and perhaps hidden for defect reasons.

If you just want to control the boost a little better, you will need to die grind the existing wastegate for better flow, or get Hypergear to weld on an enlarged puck and machine it out.

    • Yeah. Nah. This is why I said My bold for my double emphasis. We're not talking about cars tuned to the edge of det here. We're talking about normal cars. Flame propagation speed and the amount of energy required to ignite the fuel are not significant factors when running at 1500-4000 rpm, and medium to light loads, like nearly every car on the road (except twin cab utes which are driven at 6k and 100% load all the time). There is no shortage of ignition energy available in any petrol engine. If there was, we'd all be in deep shit. The calorific value, on a volume basis, is significantly different, between 98 and 91, and that turns up immediately in consumption numbers. You can see the signal easily if you control for the other variables well enough, and/or collect enough stats. As to not seeing any benefit - we had a couple of EF and EL Falcons in the company fleet back in the late 90s and early 2000s. The EEC IV ECU in those things was particularly good at adding in timing as soon as knock headroom improved, which typically came from putting in some 95 or 98. The responsiveness and power improved noticeably, and the fuel consumption dropped considerably, just from going to 95. Less delta from there to 98 - almost not noticeable, compared to the big differences seen between 91 and 95. Way back in the day, when supermarkets first started selling fuel from their own stations, I did thousands of km in FNQ in a small Toyota. I can't remember if it was a Starlet or an early Yaris. Anyway - the supermarket servos were bringing in cheap fuel from Indonesia, and the other servos were still using locally refined gear. The fuel consumption was typically at least 5%, often as much as 8% worse on the Indo shit, presumably because they had a lot more oxygenated component in the brew, and were probably barely meeting the octane spec. Around the same time or maybe a bit later (like 25 years ago), I could tell the difference between Shell 98 and BP 98, and typically preferred to only use Shell then because the Skyline ran so much better on it. Years later I found the realtionship between them had swapped, as a consequence of yet more refinery closures. So I've only used BP 98 since. Although, I must say that I could not fault the odd tank of United 98 that I've run. It's probably the same stuff. It is also very important to remember that these findings are often dependent on region. With most of the refineries in Oz now dead, there's less variability in local stuff, and he majority of our fuels are not even refined here any more anyway. It probably depends more on which SE Asian refinery is currently cheapest to operate.
    • You don't have an R34 service manual for the body do you? Have found plenty for the engine and drivetrain but nothing else
    • If they can dyno them, get them dyno'd, make sure they're not leaking, and if they look okay on the dyno and are performing relatively well, put them in the car.   If they're leaking oil etc, and you feel so inclined, open them up yourself and see what you can do to fix it. The main thing you're trying to do is replace the parts that perish, like seals. You're not attempting to change the valving. You might even be able to find somewhere that has the Tein parts/rebuild kit if you dig hard.
