The thread I was looking at yesterday said there was a cross brace in the way, but it could be possible?

Apparently the Bose amps fit under the toolkit, so I'm hoping normal aftermarket ones do too.

The only thing i would be worried about there is sufficient ventilation.

Oh so the standard Bose unit isn't powered? Has external amps?

That's what I read yesterday, Iain would be able to tell you for sure since I'm pretty sure he wrecked one.

Great thread! I have a fold out single DIN TV/DVD/GPS at the moment. I'm really keen to replace it with an OEM unit and a single DIN that will display through it.

I just checked out my car and nope, there's no way that one of those long powered subs could fit under the tool box. A small enough amp could definitely fit on the right hand side though.

Come check mine out then. I do want to see your radiator and trans cooler. Was going to look on sunday but you piked!

my ariel leads came in the mail from the UK today. So installed them along with my FM Radio extender. Now i have FM radio.......... Oh the sweet sweet sound of no more AM radio stations. Next is a service. . I have a feeling that my turbo is leaking oil. Started smoking on that side of the engine after not starting engine for a week. I have suspected it as i have had blue smoke upon startup for a few months now. Might be time to check my turbo seal aswell.

that would be such a relief if its just a rocker gasket.. Do you have a part number? Prob get both sides done at same time

Take your VIN number to a Nissan dealer. They'll have to order the gasket regardless, nothing else is a match. Cost is around $29- $30.:thumbsup:

Finally got the dump pipe fitted up today after having Captain Thread fix 2 busted studs yesterday. Big difference in performance from the stock dump.

I also noticed an increase in boost, not sure how much as it now seems the factory boost gauge is maxing out. Does anyone know how much boost increase they got from the dump and if the stock turbo can handle running a couple extra psi without destroying itself? Im just a little worried that by fitting the dump to try and extend the life of the turbo, the extra boost with destroy it sooner than before.

Also anyone know where I can get a flange gasket to suit the stage flange? It appears to not be a 3" flange gasket.

I know that the ceramic turbine wheel on the RB series don't like any more boost than 12-13psi, after this the shaft speed and heat cause the wheel to break or shatter.

No thats based on pressure measured on the dyno. Stock is 12 psi, on sausa dyno day was showing 15.

Scotty drilled his banjo out and i think he was running stupid amounts of boost without it going bang?

My banjo restrictor wasn't drilled but I cleaned it out, ran 19-20psi on the stocker for over 4 months with no issues.

Our stock 14psi boost would be too much for the older RB series ceramic turbos.

So you used a boost controller to up the boost more than what the exhaust/dump gave?

Are the turbo's that are dying from the exhaust wheel coming off or the core dying due to seals or bearing failure?

If the bearing assembly starts to fail; the exhaust turbine will be able to make contact with the housing; thus breaking the fragile ceramic blades.

I don't think any of the failed turbos have actually dropped the exhaust turbine; a-la RB turbo; only smashed the blades.

The reduction in heat buildup around the exhaust turbine by fitting the dump pipe, far outweighs any risk of failure due to excessive shaft speed IMO. I fitted the dump by itself on a factory exhaust and I'm convinced it makes the turbos life easier.

You are limited in a standard configuration to around 14/15psi anyway; due to the restrictor in the wastegate line. Even with a full 3" system and 100cspi cat mine won't go over 15psi.

With the 7psi actuator its hard to run any more than that, even with a controller. You may get 20psi midrange but it will always drop to around 15 by redline without increasing the spring tension on the wastegate.

The exhaust manifold pressure literally blows the wastegate puck open on boost bypassing the turbo hence welding a stiff spring to the actuator to hold it better.

All the stock turbo failures I have seen have been due to oil starvation/heat on the rear bearing as Dale mentioned.

    • The alloy coolant reservoir has a sight glass, so as long as I can see coolant in the sight glass it's GTG, as for PS, it isn't anything catastrophic if it gets low, and as it hasn't lost a drop since I have owned the car I cannot see it being an issue, even after putting the "big block" 2.5 in....LOL The only time it gets slightly messy is at oil changes, as the oil filter sits above the frame, and I need to use a plastic bottle with its bottom cut off to catch the flow when loosening the filter
    • Good on you for taking on the job, but it is a big one. Even if you have bolt on manifold and turbo, you will need: Post throttle pressure source to boost controller to wastegate (and FPR, and ECU/MAP sensor) Pre throttle pressure source to top of BOV(s) Oil feed - you can take that from the standard port in the middle of the block Oil return to block under the turbo - this is much trickier than it seems to route a decent/wide pipe past the manifold. You really can't use rubber hose because it is way too hot there, and also the oil out of the turbo core is a bit frothy so it needs to have a decent diameter Water feed - you can take that from the standard port in the rear of the block. Water return - mine runs to a T into the heater box return, just make sure you don't create a high point making bleeding hard. All of those lines should use 200 series style teflon braided hose with heat shielding because everything needs to be routed past the manifold. Also a turbo beanie is a really good idea to minimise the chance of the car catching fire (under bonnet lining in particular) You also need to decide a cam cover breathing solution as well, will you vent externally via a catch can (probably illegal) or return to the intake (plumbing required and can oil up everything over time) Keep in mind the intake and exhaust piping in the engine bay will be custom so you either need to be able to fab ally and steel or have someone you can get a car that isn't running to. Get the wideband fitting welded into the dump pipe at the same time. Also, just my opinion, a screamer pipe attracts attention and doesn't add power, I'd plumb it back if you want to be allowed to keep the car on the road. BTW do you know anything about how healthy the motor is, and what power you are targeting? Doubling or tripling the factory power on an unknown motor is a little risky. Also fuel system will need some attention (pumps, high current hanger, direct power and earth feed, injectors etc)
