A GT2876 isn't a cropped GT30 wheel it uses the NS111 GT28 wheel with an old school 76mm compressor. They are a bollocks turbo as they are a complete missmatch between the turbine and compressor sides.

They aren't a new turbo they have been around for years but they aren't widely used as they are an under performing turbo. They are in effect the same CHRA as a HKS GT2540.

There are applications where they do work well, for instance if you are running in a class where you have to run a restrictor before your turbo then this takes a bit of the load of the compressor due the less air hitting the wheel and therefore the small turbine has a chance of driving the compressor that is ~23mm bigger than it is.

I wonuldn't so much class it as a HUGE restriction but the standard afm is only 3", whereas my intake pipe is 4". :D

no i'm talking motorsport classes where they make forced inducted cars run a restrictor, say 38mm not talking about regular street cars.

From what Garrett write on their info page for this turbo they make it pretty clear that it isn't intended for general performance use.

ohk. I did absolutely no research when i bought the turbo. I simply went down to mtq and told them i want a large turbo to suit an sr20. I then sold the sr20 I had and got the 33, got a new turbine housing and off I went...

they are a dog turbo and really inefficient, need at least 18-20psi to do anything special even then they are still laggy. I will look up the dyno graphs i have of them at work. It is the garret equiv of a hks GT2540 but without the nice hks rear (which is still crap when compared to later offerings)

I did notice that when driving with the actuator disconnected. It still spools the same to around 15psi, but once it hits around 18 at around 5k, it jumps really quickly to around 25-28psi.

Well, after having got around 14k work done a t a performance shop, Im now making 264rwkw with the same turbo with a tial .64 housing, 6boost manifold, fmic, vipec ecu, 044 and a few other bits and peices.

torque curve is completely different, with it coming onto 15psi at around 3400, holding 15psi through to 8500. torque change from ~3800 - 7800 is virually no change (almost flat line). Still need to get bigger injectors (apparently 580cc dont cut it) and most likely a second 044 for 20+ psi. 264 cams with a bit of timing and of course the screamer for shits and giggles...

having said that, ive driven it for not even 1000kms, and the oil pump let go (so gonna get a nitto pump fitted). hopefully around february i can have it running again. come march, ill will have had the car registered and insured for a whole year, and only driven it 800kms...

Wow I can't believe you spent that much more money on that awful turbo after being told how bad they are, man if you had saved a couple of pennies elsewhere and used the change to get something decent you'd have a pretty swish package relative to the performance you have now

all good, plan on getting the gtx3076 with tial rear housing. apparently, its pretty much a straight bolt up. and from what the tuner has said, the 44mm gate will easily control boost up to around 25psi on the 6boost manifold, but he doesnt like the fact that i have 3.5" cooler piping from the cooler to tb (90mm thrrottle body with forward facing plenum).

What the hell. Why didn't you sell the turbo and be done with it? I spent around 5k on my R33 and I make more power(Turbo, ecu, injectors, dump, all little bits to piece it together). 14k, I would have a forged motor with the same running gear. Hell I would even have change left over.

well, u must be getting amazing prices on parts because the manifold cost me 1300, ecu was 1800, tune was 1000, fuel system and installation was 800, cooler and piping was 1200, exhaust and screamer was close to 1000, gate was 400, radiator was 350, various hoses / lines / fittings etc was near 500. Inlet manifold was 1400, throttle body was another 300, then things like the catch can, misc labour for other bits and peices that needed doing (water pump).

so thats 1300 + 1800 + 80 + 1200 + 1000 +400 + 350 + 500 + 1400 + 300 = ~9k in parts alone. you must also know that I had just replaced the head gasket, and all that had been done was the head removed, resurfaced and then bolted down with arp studs. i left it to the tuner to put the cams in, timing, manifolds, lines etc. I just supplied the parts, he fitted them (his idea).

I havent included the price of the housing for the turbo (700) as i dont want that to start any hype lol

EDIT: All work performed by insight motorsports in arndell park. top bloke. he asked why i was willing to spend this kinda money and my answer was essentially, why not?

OK sounds like the cost is reasonably justified then, the missing link is you kept the 2876 :)

No offense but you spent $14k and only achieved those results? Plenty of guys spend around 1/2 of that and get heaps more power with the motor unopened.

I cant see how u can safely have we'll say 500hp for less than 7k. Once you introduce 500hp, you cause alot of problems elsewhere, clutch, suspension, brakes to name a few.

EDIT: no point have 1000hp if you cant turn or stop - especially for a road registered car.

Then to also get a turbo, fit and, tune it, run a fuel system, get it to flow and get it all plumbed up, I cant see it happening unless your getting amazing deals from suppliers.

regardless, I do understand that I have spent "more" than needed to reach this figure, but it is a fantastic starting point in terms of a drift car. Its pretty much what I asked for, and in my opinion, its what I got.

Believe me, once the funds are together and the car is once again drivable (after suspension and brakes), its the first thing to swap out to a gtx3076r.

I cant imagine what peoples reaction would be once I tell the how much ive also spent on stuff not related to the motor :P

    • GCG is a good company, they're a major distributor for Garrett in Japan as well.
    • Nah, OEM washer bottle and brake fluid reservoirs are fine I don't know what it is with the plastic that Mazda used, some plastics, like the washer bottle and brake fluid res are fine, and still look new after 20 years use, where as the coolant expansion tank, and PS reservoir, that I replaced with new OEM items when I first got the car, turned yellow and started getting brittle a few years later If the dirty yellow stained plastics didn't trigger me there wouldn't be an issue, but they did, much like the battery bracket....... Meh As for going back to work full time to support car stuff, nope, why, because I own a Mazda NC MX5, not a Nissan R series Skyline 🤣
    • I've never heard of CJ-motor, so can't advise you on them. I'd just go straight to GCG for a GCG highflow though. Seems no point to use a middleman. I'm somewhat surprised that the price on the CJ site is lower than the GCG retail price. Even though CJ would get a discount of some sort, you would hardly expect them to give up so much margin. Maybe the price is out of date? Having said that "I'd go to GCG"...when I did my highflow, I went to Hypergear. I did this https://hypergearturbos.com/product/rb25dethighflow/#tab-dyno-results with the R34 OP6 450HP profile. With the BB centre (extra $400) and intially with the standard boost actuator, but I eventually got him to send me the high pressure one when I got to the point of being able to actually use it. Ends up costing the same sort of money as the GCG highflow, but this is, of course, the turbo that I KNOW has a shorter length core and so moves the comp cover rearwards. The GCG apparently doesn't do that. My mechanic also swears by the GCG highflow, given that we have another turbo rebuilder who does something essentialy the same as theirs, using Garrett wheels. He says it stands up at really low revs and makes good power. I haven't pushed my HG highflow past ~240-250rwkW yet (should have a little more in it, but unclear how much) and it does have a fairly gentle boost ramp. OK, it's much better now that I have gotten my boost controller tuned up on it.  A lot of my earlier unhappiness was because I couldn't keep the wastegate flap as closed as it needed to be (including some mechanical issues). I'd still prefer it to boost up nearly as quickly as the stocker, and it certainly a bit slower than that. So maybe the GCG one is worth the first look (for you).

    • You can literally put in as much WMI as it takes to quench the combustion totally (and then back it off a little, obviously), and it will keep making more and more power. The power comes from the cooling effect of the water (and the meth) and the extra fuel (the meth, which also has massive octane). It is effectively exactly like running E85. One might be slightly better than the other, but they are damn close. But with either you can lean on the boost or the timing (or both) waaaay more than with just petrol and the results are similar. Here's the first thing I googled for an anecdotal bit of evidence.
