IMO NRMA inspection is a waste of money, get a mechanic who knows their sh!t to check it out.

agree 100%. there are a few workshops nearby that could probably inspect it on you behalf providing northshore are happy to take it there.

3.5L? northshore is your only option AFAIK

haha, yeah i know. There's just a slight difference in price at the moment so i dont think that the purchase is going to happen too soon... =)

I bought mine from a private seller in nsw and took it to Adelaide.

I had done a lot of research prior to purchasing, and in the end I flew over and drove it home. It was a great way to get familiar with the car (although Ihad just returned from overseas, and I was enjoying being back in Australia).

It had nsw rego on it ( 5 months) and it just took a quick (5 minute) identity check at the police station before I could get the rego changed. I got a credit for the unused registration a few months later.

The hardest part was finding/reading the engine number!

3.5?

Always will be a difference in Price. Its a better car. Things are different, more refined, some more technology in it. Some of the prices asked on NM35's I've seen, the 3.5 is a no-brainer at a few grand dearer.

Obviously mine came from Northshore. I can't say a bad word about them. They let the cars do the talking- they are a notch above IMO.

After sales support is also top notch.

PLENTY of people have flown, bought and driven home from that place

Awesome! Do you have any suggestions? If I can get some names I'll look up addresses and see what Northshore are prepared to do.

I was there last Saturday morning, this was a nice car and I had a good look.

Only thing that didn't work for me was the aftermarket cd player (it's a kenwood I think), I wasn't keen on anything other than factory as I have a TV decoder that hasn't been used which I want to connect to the system so I can watch tv.

All in all it's a very neat car and I believe you would be very happy with your purchase :)

Ive seen some stuff about that, does the screen work at all without the factory deck? It doesnt bother me too much, just curious.

it doesnt need the factory head unit, however that keeps things simple as it has an aux input for the tv/satnav that is automatically selected when the tv button is pressed.

if the aftermarket head unit has an aux input, then you can probably easily use it!

Alright well I'm thinking I'll organise a mechanical inspection in the next week or so then fly over/drive back. Just need a recommendation for either a mobile inspection mob or a local mechanic close to Northshore who knows Stags and would be willing to do the job.

Any suggestions?

Well thanks to Beer Baron the car is now booked in for an inspection Monday afternoon, and if all goes well I hope to fly over Wednesday and pick it up.

Was comforting to call up Envy Imports to book it in and be told there was no need for a compression test or dyno run because Northshore cars are usually perfect. But I think I might get them to put it on the dyno while its there just so I have a baseline!

  • 2 weeks later...

FINALLY got the inspection report over a week later, car is all fine apparently. Deposit tomorrow, then just have to arrange to fly over and pick up, hopefully in time for the Adelaide Stagea cruise at the end of the month!

Thats fair. Being from Adelaide I had no idea, and never having bought a car from interstate was overly wary.

I'll need to service it when I get it, so the fun begins!

What an awesome test the trip back will be! Congrats on the purchase; enjoy!

Or you can get them to service it for you before you collect it...

I could, but where's the fun in that? :D

I'm sure it'll be fine for the run back, then dump everything and start from scratch, and learn something about how these things are held together in the process!

Love hearing that from a new car owner. Good stuff!

Cheers. I figure when something goes on I'll need to fix it. I'm not a mechanic by any stretch but dad is, and I try to learn. And I'm not going to learn by getting others to do everything for me!

Plus changing the fluids and servicing is (usually) the easiest thing you can do!

    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
    • BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
