Greetings all, my r33gtst has an xforce 3.5inch turbo back exhaust, but i was looking at the cat the other day and i think its a stock one, i'd imagine that a stock cat would cause much restriction.

can anyone tell from looking at it anything about it?

dosent look stock to me, the stock one has a heat shield and mounting holes for the heat shield, most possibly a cheap xforce highflow cat, still cheap rubbish either way, upgrade it to a nice 100 pr 200 cell metal matrix cat :D

:(

would i see any significant performance gains if i bought something like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/3-5-High-Flow-Cat-BOKKA-Metal-Stainless-Steel-/330483928428?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4cf2608d6c#ht_500wt_922

or this:

would these cats really be worth it? or would i not notice it?

Since the catback is 3.5", if the frontpipe is also 3.5" I would look at getting a cat with 3.5" ends.

I would drop the catback or the frontpipe and measure the inlet or the outlet of the cat, if it's 2.5" like most compliance cats then I would replace it, if it's 3" it might already be a hi-flow cat (ceramic type)

If the frontpipe is 3", then I would look at a Catco ceramic-castrate type bolton for <300kw (these will pass emissions tests): http://www.justjap.com/store/product.php?productid=18066&cat=&page=1 , for 300kw+ I would probably go with a 100 cell metal castrate like the Venom you listed and get flanges welded on them.

This guy knows what he is on about

What's better than a race cat? No cat at all LOL

Agreed, $50 to have a 3" decat pipe made = win

But if you do buy a new high flow cat, just dont buy it from Ebay or a website with a fully hektic green falcon where their products have more focus on being shiny than high flowing lol

I have actually went from super duper cat to a Decat. Yes you only gain 5kw in the top end. With my car I gained 30rwkw in the midrange. That's a huge difference. Boost comes in quicker and the car feels much better

As for the 10,000 fine. You would gave to be the biggest drop kick in the world to cop that fine. Only the EPA can fine you with that. And if you rock up to a EPA inspection with no car you deserve it. I have a 3 inch pipe going through a cat shell. Still looks like I got a cat there :)

Are you sure about that? If a TMU can issue an EPA notice for exhaust and intake mods, what's stopping them from getting you for no cat? The cops who last pulled me over certainly had a look under my car for one. I've heard many a story of people being done for cats - apparently some road side setups do have the gas analysers. I'm not so sure it's a 10k fine, but I have heard of people paying 2k for not having a cat. I know if I was a cop and wanted to be a dick, I'd be looking at the rear bumper for those speckles of unfiltered exhaust crap.

All things equal, I'll stick to an E85 conversion for even more power than the decat will give.

You would still get done, but I would be taking it to court. (especially if you copped the 10k fine.) Straight LPG vehicles aren't required to run it so why should I have to?

Have there been any tests done on e85 emissions with and without the cat to prove it's required? Obviously flex vehicles would still need it...

100 cell cats dont pass emissions testing anyway do they? I'm currently weighing up the pros and cons of fitting a decat pipe coz the way i see it if the 100 cell is gonna fail the test i might as well go the cheaper option that fails it too

Yeh but you're not gonna get stung with a fine for having a 100 cell cat on there, that's the point.

For those saying a decat pipe flows better; I've got dyno sheets from the back to back tests I did with my old ATR43 G2 turbo. One run made 290rwhp, that was with my full exhaust including my cat on there. The second run made 295rwhp, that was with the exhaust dropped after the front pipe. Absolutely no difference through the mid-range what-so-ever, and 0 difference in response.

This. You even did what I was going to do. For the 5rwkw you'll gain and the dirty rear bumper, it ain't worth it. Better ways to gain power.

hmm maybe thats y i have a dirty rear bumper and didnt even realise

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
