1. which R34 is better a 4 door or 2 door?

A. It's a matter of personal preference. 2-door might be easier to sell down the track since they are more popular now.

2. whats it like petrol wise does it chew through petrol quick or is it reasonable

A. Less fuel consumption with a manual and how you manage the right foot. Hwy driving, expect less than 11l/100km

3. manual, auto or tiptronic do you find better?

A. If you can drive a manual, there's more control and more fun

4. how much would i be looking at roughly for rego and insurance im with racq if that helps at all

A. Anyone under 25 or 30 cops it no matter what. Best to shop around. If your folks have max no claim bonus & are with AAMI and you do a defensive dirivers course, you may benefit

5. are there any faults or problems that are common in these cars?

A. Not any more than other cars, but watch out for rust in cars that came from salted snow roads of Japan. Check the VIN number with" VINS Fasted" thread right here

6. how much would repairs be roughly?

A. What repairs? For servicing, check out your state threads below for recommended service workshops that know their Skylines.

7. is it better to import it or buy it here already?

A. Buy one already here so you can drive/inspect it. The best examples are on SAU Cars F/S thread and maybe then look at CarSales.com. When you get to GT-R buying, then you may prefer to import through a broker here with Japanese contacts

money is not a factor for me just want to know a rough idea, and any other stuff i should know about them would be helpful.

thanks in advance guys

Leaving one finger on the search button is a good idea for further info (incl some of the above).

HELL YEA IS WORTH IT!!!

I've had my R34 for 2 years now and I have to say I'm yet to get sick of it... I've always and still do have V8 holdens, a HX 350 (5.7ltr) and a VK 308 (5.0ltr)...

After turning 25 I thought I'd spoil myself and get something different. I decided to limit myself around $20k as I can get carried away...

It was destiny! After searching for just a couple of days on carpoint.com.au or carsales.com.au, I listing magically appeared!

"R34 GT Skyline Coupe $16,500" This was too good to be true... Most people wanted $22k to $25k for something like that at that time...

The best thing was, it was located just 15min up the road. Mind you I live in the country almost in the middle of no-where!

Called up & checked her out... Just imported and complianced, still registered in Japan till 2012... Full service history, in Japanese of course.

Compliance papers and road worthy certificate ready to go! New set of low profile tyres 225 front, 255 back 19inch deep dish rims...

Amp with 2x 10inch Subs in the boot running off a 7inch LCD Pioneer Stereo with TV, GPS and Stacker! And just kept getting better!

I didn't know stuff all about turbos but the R34 Skyline was my "realistic" dream car. But after seeing it for the first time, I knew it was mine...

It looks so damn fat at the back with them big fat wheels, I almost creamed myself! By this point there's was no going back!

Still we went for a quick boost up the freeway and back... I had no cash for deposit, lol... I told the guy I want, I don't care how!!!

Lucky for me I got a loan through the bank, no worries... After taking 3 days to get a loan, I couldn't wait any longer...

I drove over 200km to get a bank cheque on a Saturday and picked her up! I was Soooooo, damn excited and nervous at the same time.

I almost couldn't get myself together to drive it home! I couldn't believe I was taking home a R34 Skyline!!!

I feel sorry for 4 door owners as it just makes the car look wrong. I have to say if your going to get a Skyline get a coupe!

Not only will it look better but it'll be cheaper to insure and register! Surprisingly for me the Skyline was the cheapest of all my cars.

As for parts and maintenance... In the last 2 years I've spent a third of the amount on the Skyline compared to my HX Holden!

So long as you take it easy and don't allow the turbo to wind up you can get really good economy. The other day I did around,

160 to 180km on a quarter of a tank, BUT in the last 30km a race broke out between 4 cars and I used another quarter in that distance.

I only ever use BP Ultimate fuel & service every 5,000km with Motul Turbolight... Wash, Polish & Detail every Weekend if not more...

More people look at my car than a HSV or $100k plus luxury Mercedes and it's a fraction of the price! It just has the X factor!

These days I'll race anyone in anything, anywhere... Yesterday I was racing a CBR250 sitting on around 180km/p through corners.

Didn't wanna push him too hard, he was still on he's L's... Most people wont even try me, often I pace myself with them...

Rarely am I challenged or beaten... I'll smash a VE SS or WRX... But not too long ago I finally come across the White Maloo

thats been getting around town. Conveniently we come to a red light side by side... I rev him up, Let Go! Lights turn green...

Started off bout even till i got into 3rd and he just launched, I look I'm doing bout 160 and he just keeps going...

He got such a lead, I wash crushed! But have to consider that the Maloo is worth about $75k and has over 300kw...

The R34 Skyline was also ahead of it's time with traction control, stability management, ABS, air bags, cambered steering,

all wheel steering, electronic LSD diff, independent rear suspension and more... Where today's Fords and Holdens are only

starting to come out with these features as an optional extra! My R34 has tiptronic as serves me well and still smashes 99.9%

of the chumps I come across, would only need a manual for more serious driving, depends what you would really prefer...

I'd prefer manual so I could control the drift a bit better as I find the tiptronic takes to long to change gear, but I was getting a bargain.

Anyways I think I've said enough for one night...

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
