I'm after some performance points.....and I like the ones that come without a downside (besides money).

So anyway I have ~230rwkw, a nice dump pipe and exhaust (Fujitsubo twin 2.5") but I remember I bought a ceramic cat cause I only had a stock turbo back then. So, should I now fit a high flow 100 cell metal cat?

If I replaced the cat with a metal cat would I even notice where my $400 went? Anybody got some dyno numbers to back up claims?

Seem that the 3" outlet/inlet with 4" 100 cell biscuit is the go.

Look around for a larger stock cat at a exhaust shop waste bin, lots of people replace the cats on 5.7 ltr GM cars, it may flow well enough for your power levels and cost not much to nothing.

ahh ha. Found a dyno comparison after some searching. Makes about a 4% improvement from a ceramic cat and about a 3% drop from a straight pipe. Gain of 14whp on an Evo that started with 300whp (gains over entire curve).

How do you tell if your cat is a highflow?

I have a 3"exhaust and have no idea about the cat..was already on there sorta looks like a standard one but in a 3" variety. can you get them checked? apart from looking at the cells...

id say that apart from making little difference at the wheels, the only reason i would be changing to to a metal CAT is they are less likely to "meltdown". if a heap of raw fuel is punched down the exhaust and ignites and melts the monolith, then ofcourse going from a pile of melted (blocked) mess to a highflow you will notice a difference.

also metal CATs are arent known for cracking up and coming apart like ceramic CATs, including impact damage for those who like their cars low and their CATs eating speedhumps and driveways

I dont think that you'll be noticing much difference.

pull your cat out and see how it looks, if you can see light through it then its going to flow well. the only time a cat is going to cause and issue is if it is collapsed.

as far as people saying you gain 30kw going to straight pipe, its probably on cars with well over 300kw. and maybe their cat wasnt flowing well enough and causing a restriction.

but at 230kw a 3in highflow cat should be fine even up to over 300kw.

    • I feel I should re-iterate. The above picture is the only option available in the software and the blurb from HP Tuners I quoted earlier is the only way to add data to it and that's the description they offer as to how to figure it out. The only fields available is the blank box after (Input/ ) and the box right before = Output. Those are the only numbers that can be entered.
    • No, your formula is arse backwards. Mine is totally different to yours, and is the one I said was bang on at 50 and 150. I'll put your data into Excel (actually it already is, chart it and fit a linear fit to it, aiming to make it evenly wrong across the whole span. But not now. Other things to do first.
    • God damnit. The only option I actually have in the software is the one that is screenshotted. I am glad that I at least got it right... for those two points. Would it actually change anything if I chose/used 80C and 120C as the two points instead? My brain wants to imagine the formula put into HPtuners would be the same equation, otherwise none of this makes sense to me, unless: 1) The formula you put into VCM Scanner/HPTuners is always linear 2) The two points/input pairs are only arbitrary to choose (as the documentation implies) IF the actual scaling of the sensor is linear. then 3) If the scaling is not linear, the two points you choose matter a great deal, because the formula will draw a line between those two points only.
    • Nah, that is hella wrong. If I do a simple linear between 150°C (0.407v) and 50°C (2.98v) I get the formula Temperature = -38.8651*voltage + 165.8181 It is perfectly correct at 50 and 150, but it is as much as 20° out in the region of 110°C, because the actual data is significantly non-linear there. It is no more than 4° out down at the lowest temperatures, but is is seriously shit almost everywhere. I cannot believe that the instruction is to do a 2 point linear fit. I would say the method I used previously would have to be better.
