Hey,

Quick questions here.

I'm looking at purchasing a R34 GTR from sydney however i'm in SA so would like to get a mechanical check done before i fly there.

Would you go for CRD or just a NRMA check?

CRD is quite pricey at $440 but i'm willing to pay that if it's worth it.

Cheers, Jonno.

I hope you let the guy know your coming to have a look , i bought mine from NZ and brought it to S.A ,

have a good look at it yourself no need for mechanics to go over !!! .

i can give you a list of things to look at when buying !! If you want ????

A mate used to work for NRMA vehicle inspections (which no longer exist) and whilst being a great mechanic; due to his specialty Honda training, he was no GTR specialist.

Mostly the NRMA style inspections look for accident damage (repaired and unrepaired) and general wear & tear; as opposed to model specific issues. You might be lucky to fluke someone with some experience but by and large, you don't get to choose.

Surely you'd be better having someone who knows exactly what they're looking for, doing the job, especially with the potential cost in getting it wrong.

As you say $440 is peanuts compared to an engine rebuild if you weren't planning to do one...pinch.gif

Yeah i'd rather just have it checked over for peace of mind. Just saves me the hassle of flying to NSW just to look at it. If the mechanic report comes out bad i don't even have to bother wasting time and money flying there.

But a list would be good either way, cheers!

Yeah that's why i was leaning toward CRD, they KNOW they're GTR's.

Not being from NSW was just looking at feedback if there's elsewhere i can take it to? Or if CRD was the best choice.

Todd at Japlink.. He supports all SAU NSW members with many benefits/discounts and is as honest as it comes. Cannot recommend him enough!

Highly recommend CRD.

My beasty is there right now :(

Definately get someone to look at it, and not the NRMA.

No need for mechanics? So you can do a compression test yourself can you? I understand there are a lot of things you can check yourself, but there's also a lot you can't!

CRD, Powerplay Imports, Tune House, Dart, Just Jap, Unigroup Eng, JapLink.

We're well catered for here in NSW.

Just consider...

CRD, Powerplay and Tune House cost the most compared to the other 4.

JapLink is also a compliance centre (+ other positives that Aggroman kindly mentioned)

Some things u can do yourself :

  • Just park in neutral and rev hard to make sure theres no smoke out the back - black smoke = running rich/too much fuel?, sometimes it is the carbon/soot buildup in the exhaust that is released when hard-revving. Blue smoke = usually your piston rings are fked -steer clear, white smoke = burning oil / water I think.
  • Take it for a drive, brake hard, judge if the brakes are good, no wobbling, shuddering (rotors are warped), should brake clean and hard
  • Hard cornering - no funny noises, squeaks etc, should turn in nice and sharp, Judge steering feel, should be bit heavy and precise -point and go
  • Hard revving - should sound nice and clean and power should hold well in upper rpms, no flat spots/ back-offs etc
  • Check for exhaust rattle, turbo gasket rattle etc
  • No crunching of gearbox when shifting at high rpms - smooth shift
  • Again no funny noises anywhere
  • Check no uneven wear marks in tyres, check suspension is balanced
  • Check the usuals - lights, seatbelts, wipers, safety stuff
  • Airconditioning, fancy electrical stuff- check all these
  • Check body alignment by looking at an angle to see theres no accident damage etc, a trained eye you need for this..
  • Check all the fluids to see they are fresh - ie oil shouldnt be black - deep red is fresh oil
  • Ask when / if the timing belt was done
  • Taking it for a HARD drive is the best way to check that these systems are up to spec and can more than withstand abuse
  • Then pay a workshop 50 bux or so to do an engine compression test - very important

Thats as far as I know, Im no mechanic.. good luck

    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... HTH
    • I think Fitmit had some, have a look on there (theyre Australian as well)
    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily.
    • Actually, I'd say all three are the automatic option. Just the different trim levels. The manual would be RSFS, no?
