Hi Everyone,

Been ages since I've posted on SAU - sold my last Stagea years ago and have been living overseas since.

So we're returning back to Australia in a fortnight and I'm looking into car options. The M35 is looking like a solid choice, but I was just wondering if someone could find the time to answer a few questions...

1. Is there a good guide somewhere that describes the differences between all of the different models?

2. Is the body styling specific to the model or were they factory options? I want the front bar with the two lower lamps in each side of the "mouth", and also the small rear wing. (As per this car > http://www.stanceworks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9060)

3. What common problems do they have?

4. I don't think I want HICAS, but I could be wrong. Just seems like something else to go wrong. Should I reconsider?

5. I read somewhere that it is possible to convert the SatNav/etc system to English in these. Is there a thread about this somewhere?

6. Any differences between the years that I should look out for? I'm only interested in the VQ25DET (not even sure if the VQ35DE is eligible for import anyway)..

Any other advice? Pretty stoked that I looked into the M35's again, they are a great looking package for the money.

Cheers fellas!

1. differences between RS/RX/ARX/AXIS? They all have the same VQ25DET (in series 1), but Iain is a nerd and can answer the rest of them. Some have HICAS and LSDs, AR-X has more boost and plastic overfenders.

2. The front bar you're talking about is the Aero kit, which was a factory option on RS and RX. I don't think the wing was a factory option, and you'd have to chase it down through Yahoo Auctions Japan.

3. Turbo, but Aaron and Scotty have found if you bore out the banjo bolt on the turbo oil feed from 1mm to 3mm they don't expire.

4. Depending on what car you go for, HICAS might not even be an option. My RS doesn't have HICAS.

5. Yes it is, in Adelaide you need to talk to Brad (ducati02 on here).

6. Series 1 is VQ25DET, Series 2 is VQ35DE. Series 2 also has tweaked bumpers and a tweaked (and probably slightly nicer) interior.

I see you're in Adelaide, you're welcome to check out my RS. I love it, greatest car I've owned, and has the Aero option you're after.

Otherwise come out to the next cruise and have a look. There are a few different ones, I know we're expecting a couple of RSs, an AXIS and maybe an RX, but I'm not sure if there are any AR-Xs in Adelaide.

Start here; http://www.skylinesa...85569-m35-info/

2. Is the body styling specific to the model or were they factory options? I want the front bar with the two lower lamps in each side of the "mouth", and also the small rear wing. (As per this car > http://www.stancewor...read.php?t=9060)

Aero Selection Kit. Not hard to find a car with it fitted; worth the extra to buy one, gets expensive to do it down the track (as I have found).

3. What common problems do they have?

Turbo failure is the most common one; but this appears to have been traced (by Scotty & Aaron) to blocked oil supply Banjo bolt. It has a 1mm hole to reduce oil supply to the BB core and can block easily if the car hasn't been serviced regularly. Budget for a rebuilt turbo if possible, mine has done 40,00km without issue; others have failed much sooner. Searching will unearth several things, but others may care to elaborate.

4. I don't think I want HICAS, but I could be wrong. Just seems like something else to go wrong. Should I reconsider?

It's not a big deal, if you avoid HICAS you will not get a factory LSD; the two are fitted together.

5. I read somewhere that it is possible to convert the SatNav/etc system to English in these. Is there a thread about this somewhere?

Yes, it can be done; where are you located?

6. Any differences between the years that I should look out for? I'm only interested in the VQ25DET (not even sure if the VQ35DE is eligible for import anyway)..

Not really; you will find differing trim depending on what model you buy; cloth versus leather/power seats. PM/PNM's have a slightly more modern dash; looks quite slick, and the front end is different; again more modern, a tasteful evolution.

Any other advice? Pretty stoked that I looked into the M35's again, they are a great looking package for the money.

Have a fish around in the forum; there's heaps of info (and a bit of off topic nonsense) and loads of help to be had. I'm sure others will elaborate further, but it's all here if you have a poke around.

Cheers fellas!

Answers in red. Good luck!

Cheers, Dale.

You should tag along with one of us on the next Stagea cruise. Get to meet a lots of great people and see all the different models. Its only 3 weeks away. Hope to see you there. :action-smiley-069:

i sold my series 2 c34 stagea 2years ago now, no big loss, the thing was a rust bucked with a screwd transmission.

since then i cant make up my mind one what car i want... i keep coming back to stagea's, would much rather a m35 over a c34 now, just from the fear of rust and meh, owned one before.

been looking at a heap of m35's man, they keep getting better!! saving starts now, i may be coming back to the forums shortly with alot more questions :D

especially when its not hard to push them above 300kw

Bailed on the R34?

Go with a good M35.

m35 look more classy aswell as really tough!!

dont know if i'll go down the JDM track with it though...

especially when its not hard to push them above 300kw

and still keep fuel economy down :P

there is a white Autech Axis for sale in the classifieds section. i would trade mine for that straight erp.....it's a lovely looking piece of gear, and fully loaded for 18k. can't go wrong.

prices on 35's have taken a big hit since i was looking 6 months ago. where as they used to be in the 20's, now they are regularly in the mid teens. if i was buying now i'd go straight for a 35 purely for the newer car factor and the extra creature comforts. if you like working on your cars, adding off the shelf parts, and tinkering around a bit though, C34 is where you need to be..... much more user friendly and wallet friendly.

Fuel consumption is better with the 300awkws than the standard tune......if you get right up it though it tends to drink very well though!....as it should.

300awkws Aaron!.... You????....I'll smash that the next time I'm on the dyno! :P

    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
    • BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
