Hey guys!

I´m new here amd first, I will introduce myself:

My name is Marco and I´m 27 years old. I own a 2001 Stagea 250t RS Four V. I live in Berlin, Germany and my NM35 is the first in Germany.

If you have any questions, you can ask me everytime. But please think of one thing: In Germany we´re 10 hours after you. ;-)

Here´s my first question:

I tried to vent my stock BOV to atmosphere. At some pics in this forum I´ve seen, that some of you build this way. But when I pull off the tube between BOV and air-filter, the engine runs very irregular and turns off a few seconds after I started it. So what have you done, that it works?! I´m going crazy...

Sorry, but I don´t understand "un metered air". Does the engine / ecu know, if the pipe between BOV and air-filter is connected or not?!

And will it work with an aftermarket BOV? I´m looking for a GReddy Type S. But I definitly want to use it open and not recirculated.

The air that is being sucked in isn't going through the afm so it's unmetered. All atmo bov can make your car stall. I had mine atmo for a few weeks during my turbo upgrade, as long as you keep the throttle open it will run. I you really want the noise just keep you foot on the accelerator as soon as it starts.

But why should anyone flame me for this thread? I don´t want to destroy my engine. That´s why I´m asking the people in this forum. Because in Germany there´s no NISSAN, with turbocharged petrol-engine anymore. The last of them was the Silvia S14, which is called in Germany 200SX with the SR20DET. And I can´t ask someone here.

If you want the noise, why not just block it off all together?

In Australia it's illegal to vent to atmosphere, so I think you'll find most people on here have theirs plumbed back.

Some people on here just don't like the noise. I used to always run an atmo bov in my celica, and it worked fine because it was a map sensored ecu, with the Nissan stock ecus it runs an afm so they sometime stall, use more fuel and shoot more flames out the exhaust when you run an atmo bov, afaik running an atmo won't damage anything. If you do get an after market bov it will work aslong as the spring is strong enough to hold it shut at idle

Edit- as big kev said. You can always just unplug the vacuum line and have it flutter instead.

I think there was another guy from Germany that has a M35 Stagea...Stefan or something...maybe u guys should meet up hehe.

As for the BOV I have no idea...all I know is the stock one works fine unless it's making farting noises.

Sorry, I didn´t know, that it is illegal to VTA. But if I block the BOV, it will flutter. And I don´t want the flutter, because it´s not so good for the turbine.

Okay. So I have to connect the plumb back pipe on the BOV. That´s bad, because I think, the Stagea would sound really nice with a vented BOV. :-(

You can run the Greddy or Blitz bov's venting to atmosphere on an M35 without issue.

They both have kits that will bolt right on.

Here are a couple of sites for you....just so that you know I can run up to 25PSI with no trouble on the stock BOV......it works very well for a standard item and is very specific to our car. Another thing to remember...Nissan designed the NM35 to not be modified so every move you make you will more than likely have a struggle with.

There are aftermarket plumb back bov's you could use, otherwise you may need to run an Emanage Ultimate p1ggiback to stop the stalling. Have you tried putting a grub screw in the bypass hole under the bov?

You need to block off the plumb back hose, using something of similar diameter to the plumb back(eg. rubber stopper) and hose clamping it securely in place.

You are allowing a source of air after the MAF/AFM which is causing your stalling.

It may still stall on slowing to a stop but should run fine and idle ok.

Mine's doing the same thing, so I know where you're coming from now :thumbsup:

Just look for a replacement stock one, or there are some Nissan specific units from Greddy, Blitz and Turbosmart. I'm almost certainly going down the Turbosmart route to fix mine.

Just to spell it out conservative old gits like me think its immature to want a noisy bov to draw attention to the fact that you have a turbo - especially when you are just being out - dragged by a Honda so recommend that you stay with the stock set up. However if you really want you will be able to fit an atmos bov and still keep your car running. The best way would be to fit an ecu that doesn't require an afm (E-Manage, F-Con) so that running is not affected but unless you are looking for big power down the road that's probably too expensive a way to go and there are other ways.

It is not illegal to vent your bov to atmosphere in New Zealand so may not be in Germany either.

BTW anyone tried moving the afm between the bov and the throttle body? Could be a bit of a mission on an VQ I guess.

    • Have a look at that (shitty) pic I posted. You can see AN -4 braided line coming to a -4 to 1/8 BSPT adapter, into a 1/8 BSPT T piece. The Haltech pressure sender is screwed into the long arm of the sender and factory sender (pre your pic) into the T side. You can also see the cable tie holding the whole contraption in place. Is it better than mounting the sender direct to your engine fitting......yes because it removes that vibration as the engine revs out 50 times every lap and that factory sender is pretty big. Is it necessary for you......well I've got no idea, I just don't like something important failing twice so over-engineer it to the moon!
    • Yup. You can get creative and make a sort of "bracket" with cable ties. Put 2 around the sender with a third passing underneath them strapped down against the sender. Then that third one is able to be passed through some hole at right angles to the orientation of the sender. Or some variation on the theme. Yes.... ummm, with caveats? I mean, the sender is BSP and you would likely have AN stuff on the hose, so yes, there would be the adapter you mention. But the block end will either be 1/8 NPT if that thread is still OK in there, or you can drill and tap it out to 1/4 BSP or NPT and use appropriate adapter there. As it stands, your mention of 1/8 BSPT male seems... wrong for the 1/8 NPT female it has to go into. The hose will be better, because even with the bush, the mass of the sender will be "hanging" off a hard threaded connection and will add some stress/strain to that. It might fail in the future. The hose eliminates almost all such risk - but adds in several more threaded connections to leak from! It really should be tapered, but it looks very long in that photo with no taper visible. If you have it in hand you should be able to see if it tapered or not. There technically is no possibility of a mechanical seal with a parallel male in a parallel female, so it is hard to believe that it is parallel male, but weirder things have happened. Maybe it's meant to seat on some surface when screwed in on the original installation? Anyway, at that thread size, parallel in parallel, with tape and goop, will seal just fine.
    • How do you propose I cable tie this: To something securely? Is it really just a case of finding a couple of holes and ziptying it there so it never goes flying or starts dangling around, more or less? Then run a 1/8 BSP Female to [hose adapter of choice?/AN?] and then the opposing fitting at the bush-into-oil-block end? being the hose-into-realistically likely a 1/8 BSPT male) Is this going to provide any real benefit over using a stainless/steel 1/4 to 1/8 BSPT reducing bush? I am making the assumption the OEM sender is BSPT not BSPP/BSP
    • I fashioned a ramp out of a couple of pieces of 140x35 lumber, to get the bumper up slightly, and then one of these is what I use
    • I wouldn't worry about dissimilar metal corrosion, should you just buy/make a steel replacement. There will be thread tape and sealant compound between the metals. The few little spots where they touch each other will be deep inside the joint, unable to get wet. And the alloy block is much much larger than a small steel fitting, so there is plenty of "sacrificial" capacity there. Any bush you put in there will be dissimilar anyway. Either steel or brass. Maybe stainless. All of them are different to the other parts in the chain. But what I said above still applies.
