Vw is far from prestige. Euro maybe? But does not come close to prestige.

They're seriously shit. Sitting their reving their engines like heroes. One of the r36 was doing it with chunks of blue smoke. People were clapping saying its awesome. Wut?

Precisely, but everyone who owns one thinks that they've got themselves a good european car(owing to the fact that VW group owns audi as well so their engines have some similarities) compared to all the other "inferior" japanese "cheaply" made garbage. The look on their faces when you tell them you own a skyline says it all.

Vw's have become the affordable european car and in general people tend to associate a "prestige value" with euro vehicles.

Yeah and they get it apr tuned and lean the shit out of the car to get more power, thinking that it's "hidden" potential only to end up with a ticking time bomb. I love it when they always say "My fuel economy has improved after the tune and I get loads more power! Awesome!"

Hmm had imports most my life and still do, love them to bits. Also have a vw gti infront of my house and I can't exactly see how it's shit or cheaply made. It's far from prestige but it ain't shit either.

And dude the apr tune just leaning the shit out of it to make power. I can see the hatred and all but come on!!!

friend wasnt saying they are shit, he was saying that the engineers do a great job of making cheap components feel nicer/more expensive than they are, but at the end of the day, they are still cheap materials.

Of course, what manufacturer isn't trying to save money and use cheaper materials, they all do it!! I wasn't aiming my comment directly at you anyway.

The problem is individuals owning a VW as far as those whom I know love to stick their noses in the air and associate it as a "prestige" and therefore better which is generally not the case. In addition to the tuning etc. made to the engine and thinking that they have superior performance/reliability as opposed to japanese cars, assuming that you're not trashing the shit out of your jap car.

Regarding the leaning out thing, it's because they made it readily available and marketed it and made it mainstream, people don't realise the harm they are doing to their cars and take them to a VW service centre which are probably going to use sub-par oils/fluids that are not made for the increase in power obtained from the aggressive tune, not to forget, stock internals.

Anything above 227 hp (not much room to play with) from a stock GTI engine is going to cause problems, APR stage 1 gets you 254 hp, way above the limit for the stock engine. The Audi TTS which has 265 hp has the same 2.0L I4 engine reinforced from factory, if the engineers from Audi thinks that a reinforced engine is required to take that sort of horsepower, what makes you think that APR's claims that they are tuning it within the limits of a stock GTI engine without any reinforcements are true? Furthermore, every 2.0L i4 engine from VW that produces more or equal to 169kw's of power comes with reinforcements made to the internals. I think their engineers know what's good for their own engines and what isn't.

4th paragraph from: http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2010-audi-tts-road-test-review highlights the reinforcement of the engine internals from the 2.0L i4 engine to accommodate the increase in power from the tune/turbo upgrade.

But meh, at the end of the day, I just hate it when people judge you for driving a japanese car when they drive a european one. It's not the car, just the driver's that reek of elitism that annoys me :P , and my advice to any potential/current GTI owners, please just keep the engine stock or face reliability issues down the road, unless you're going to reinforce the internals  then go crazy!!

Edit:

jelly? golf the new civic? :P

SAU has been in people's faces a lot this year I think. not surprising people see what the fuss is

Yes it is xD polo's too are pretty affordable hatches too nowadays (plus it's european :rofl2:) , good for transporting stuff around

    • Possibly avoid using a Cometic one unless the deck/head surface are perfectly flat. I did have a look just then and forgiving gaskets such as Tomei or Nitto don't exist for the FJ20, however the Bar-Tek or Kameari ones look good and might do the trick.
    • Because pipe threads for pipe things. M threads for bolt things. Throw some teflon sealant onto it and dust your hands off knowing you did the right thing, instead of going twice around the block to achieve a result using the wrong things. Of course, all of these solutions are ignoring the fact that the minimum thread pitch we're talking about here is 1.25mm, with the 1/4" in NPT or BPS being out around 1.4mm. You will need to know that the boss you're tapping has enough thickness for at least a few threads. That's one of the reasons that 1/8" is commonly used - because the pitch is <1mm. And why would you look to use 1/4" NPT in a BSP country anyway? Ugh.
    • Just throwing around ideas, does it need to be in the compressor cover? Why not the hot side piping?
    • 1/8NPT drill size = 8.7mm. Since the hole got messed up by me, it’s probably around 9mm.    So 1/4” NPT would be next step. A drill size of around 11mm would be preferred there which is not way of my M12 (drill 10.5mm and tap M12 threads)
