We can't all have high paying jobs. Society simply doesn't work that way... Economics 101...

Must have been the subject Joe Hockey missed while he was busy protesting against uni fee increases

Granted and this is why we can't all be home owners

So what happens when these people that cant afford a house retire? They can't save enough to rent for the rest of their life on the pension....

You can't claim there is not a serious issue with housing affordability... it now costs a solid 10 times the median wage to get an average house... when our parents bought houses it was closer to 3

I'm not saying I have the solution, and neither do the ALP, but saying people should just earn more money as if that is something that is accessable to anyone and everyone was just stupid... especially when it came from someone that already had the public well offside and is perceived as being out of touch.

It also doesn't bode well to make comments regarding housing affordability that ostracise the poor when your own...sorry... "your wife's" mortgage is paid by the tax payer as "accommodation expenses"

Even more so when you had freshly called mothers claiming a far smaller amount "double dippers" whose activity (despite being specifically allowed) is "tantamount to fraud"

Does it really? From what I see is people over reaching because Dezz house wouldn't have cost that mine sure as heck didn't sure we don't live in blue chip suburbs but it's called compromise. So don't gimme that crap plenty of places to buy a house for $400k and a damn good one at that. Heck $600k will get you one of the best homes on the market!

So yes it is a problem however I think expectations have a lot to do with it.

400k is still ~7.5 times the median wage.

Shit is simply a LOT more expensive now.

The house I'm sitting in right now (mums) was bought for ~$40k in 1975 at ~5 times the average wage and is now worth $1m which is ~13.5 times the average wage.

well for starters not many singles buy property that's a reality and has been for last couple decades. Secondly when your mum bought I bet she didn't think it was 'cheap' or 'easy'

    • Nah that is not actually a lot. Just painting my GTR frontend and the little bits to make sideskirts/nismo flare pieces work correctly/fit on the sedan/mount up correctly came to about $7000. Is it a lot? Sure. None of this is economical. Economy would be shelling the car and buying a 2010 Corolla to commute in. The perspective of all of this is different.

    • I don't see any issues here. I've been saying all along this is a big job, the price reflects that.  When the car comes back perfect I'm sure it will feel like money well spent.

    • So, I started this repair and got as far as "fixing" the holes with some fibreglass. God all those years working on boats came back quickly. I decided I'd reach out to some rust guys just to see what they would say about it. I came across a guy about 40 mins away and went to see him. He said the windscreen needs to come out, that there might be some more bits around the windscreen and he'd quote them at the time. But his quote was $300 to remove and replace windscreen and $3k for the damage he can see. He said he could respray the roof for $1200 and the bonnet for another $800 (somebody has previously rattle canned it, its horrendous). This is $5300 + any small additional bits. It's a lot, I get that and the name of one of my fave youtube channels 'Not Economically Viable' comes to mind.  I'm not being financially rational, but I've taken him up on the quote. He's opening a new shop in November with more room, so we're waiting for that. I'll leave the currently missing headliner out until then. I'm looking forward to it being fixed and having the paint looking nice again (lots of clear coat issues on the roof too). / flame suit on.
