Hey fellow New South-Welshmen, not sure if anyone else saw it in the paper, but, even though Schools statewide went for Summer holidays on Friday the 17th the Politsia will still be enforcing school zones (including those with speed cameras) until the end of this week (the 23rd?) despite there being no kiddies at school.

Just thought I might get the word out in case anyone was to come to the logical conclusion that school holidays=school zones not in force and get a nice $200-300 christmas present from the Govt ;)

It might seem a little silly, a little cash based even, but hey, just be grateful we don't get bashed by the coppers when we get pulled over, like they do down south.

Max you really have a lot of issues with obeying the law.

How about doing some research on why they continue to enforce the limits instead of posting up about how unfair the world is.

And FFS how hard is it to do the posted speed limits for a certain area, you were born with eyes were you not, how about engaging your brain and your eyes into gear before you hammer the load pedal.

I'd actually like to say thanks. I don't have kids, an all I knew was from work mates that their kids were on holidays this week, meaning I expected no school zones.

I think laying off Maxima about this thread would be a good idea. I even think there'd be a lot of parents whom don't know school zones are still in affect.

Next time, jump on him for warning you of double demerits...

It's just there have always been full time school zones, the signs are different to reflect this, just because its school holidays doesn't mean there isn't kids attending schools, have a look at your traffic authority web site and it explains it all there, the full time ones are marked differently, its also up to the licence holder to keep up to date with all relevant changes to the road laws, you agree to do this when you first get your licence.

From memory there are 4 different class signs for school zones, there is legislation going on at the moment to have all school zones 40kph full time to account for after school classes, meetings and other after hour meetings and remove the confusion off changing speed limits during the course of the day.

Me I cannot see a issue with it and as a side note if you are going to put speed cameras anywhere, school zones is where they should go.

Mark, there may be some that are always working etc, we've got ones around Wollongong that run all day etc. But the last time I read about school zones, was that they stopped when school semester ended. As far as I was aware the semester was over.

The RTA should do more to let people know when it is a school semester or not. Put the f**king flashing lights on all school zones and it will solve this issue.

If traveling in a 70 kph zone and you come across a school zone with the length of 1km, the added time to your trip would be 39 seconds, not many school zones that long really, most between 300 to 500 mtrs around here thus only adding 20 seconds to the trip.

To add 15 minutes to a trip you would need to pass 23 schools each having a reduced zone distance of 1klm.

Just though I would add some prospective as I was having this discussion with a friend last night who thought the 3 school zones were adding 15 minutes to his trip, we calculated the data and even did a live run, results were slightly different due to other traffic and the distance used to slow down to achieve the speed limit prior to reaching the sign.

I apologize for offending and I should have stated my case differently, to me this is common sense and following road law, I admit that I sit a road law test at least once a year and am extremely anal about road safety.

Mark, I agree with you, I have zero issues with sticking to school zones, but due to the fact I rarely go through them, I don't go looking up info on what day it starts and stops nor do I have it memorized. As you'd know, it's illegal for me to use my phone to google school semesters while driving... ;)

What I'd like is te RTA to kindly put flashing lights on all school zones so everyone is alerted when they do get to them if it is active or not.

I think you'll also find this threa was made like most people make as a "hey guys, it's double demerits this weekend, be extra vigilant"

It's just nice to know, but this info is even better to know IMO.

Agree that *all* school zones should have flashing lights. I'd say a fair proportion of people that have sped through school zones did so unknowingly because there weren't flashing lights or the sign was obstructed by a tree or placed in close proximity to about 5 other surrounding (unrelated) signs or advertising. Regardless of how careless that person might have been, it's surely beyond question that when the flashing lights are in place the level of unintentional speeding through school zones is minimised.

One of the main reasons I look up school terms is that we have limited parking at work and there's a "Bus zone 8am-9am on School Days" sign that applies to a few free parking spots and you need to know when those "school days" are.

They have been slowly rolling out flashing lights for a few years now, moneys been tight with all the mismanagement and waste though which has held up proceedings.

We got our flashing lights by constantly hassling the council with petitions at bringing it up at the local meetings.

If we can get the most corrupt local council (Liverpool) to get there act into gear and spend some money on safety there is hope for us all.

Probably the last school in Wollongong to get the flashing lights was one of the richest; TIGS. Coincidentally, this school also had a speed camera going past it, on a hill.

Flashing lights is good to alert drivers and get their focus back on the road and driving.

BUT I'm dissapointed that 'we'

1. Fail to teach children road safety,

2. Fail to teach young children physics,

3. Dumb the population and our children down by reducing speed limits to deal with dumb drivers, neglectful parents of young kids and

4. Why do 'we' allow our children that are not developed enough to know better, to walk accross roads without a parent/gaurdian ?

Driving with my girl one day when a large garbage truck went through an intersection. - I braked hard, missed the collision and went verbally ballistic having right of way -

(as do pedestrians on the road apparently). My girl just looked at me and said "you cant win an argument with a garbage truck when your in a car".

When your on foot you will not win an argument with a car. SIMPLE

C'mon folks - Self duty of care for you and your kids.

60, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10. Why dont we just change orange falshing lights to red and be done with it. 0kmhs per hour!

Lol, this mlr guy really hates me.

Some people just HAVE to ride someone. every one gets 1, looks like you've found your's

You had valid arguments until you said this. Making accusations of corruption is not just wrong, it is illegal and slander.

All but your last line i agree 1000000%. We shouldn't be focusing on the 1% of retarded drivers, we should be educating our kids to look out for these fools.

BTW, This remark makes your 'girl' awesome!

    • Thanks for that, I'll check it all out. I can always do the brakes last anyway if its a problem.  The 16's are super cool, if they do fit I'll cruise around with them for a bit.
    • Well, that's kinda the point. The calipers might interfere with the inside of the barrels 16" rims are only about 14" inside the barrels, which is ~350mm, and 334mm rotors only leave about 8mm outboard for the caliper before you get to 350, And.... that;s not gunna be enough. If the rims have a larger ID than that, you might sneak it in. I'd be putting a measuring stick inside the wheel and eyeballing the extra required for the caliper outboard of the rotor before committing to bolting it all on.
    • OK, so again it has been a bit of a break but it was around researching what had been done since I didn't have access to Neil's records and not everything is obvious without pulling stuff apart. Happily the guy who assembled the engine had kept reasonable records, so we now know the final spec is: Bottom end: Standard block and crank Ross 86.5mm forgies, 9:1 compression Spool forged rods Standard main bolts Oil pump Spool billet gears in standard housing Aeroflow extended and baffled sump Head Freshly rebuilt standard head with new 80lb valve springs Mild porting/port match Head oil feed restrictor VCT disabled Tighe 805C reground cams (255 duration, 8.93 lift)  Adjustable cam gears on inlet/exhaust Standard head bolts, gasket not confirmed but assumed MLS External 555cc Nismo injectors Z32 AFM Bosch 023 Intank fuel pump Garret 2871 (factory housings and manifold) Hypertune FFP plenum with standard throttle   Time to book in a trip to Unigroup
    • I forgot about my shiny new plates!
    • Well, apparently they do fit, however this wont be a problem if not because the car will be stationary while i do the suspension work. I was just going to use the 16's to roll the old girl around if I needed to. I just need to get the E90 back on the road first. Yes! I'm a believer! 🙌 So, I contacted them because the site kinda sucks and I was really confused about what I'd need. They put together a package for me and because I was spraying all the seat surfaces and not doing spot fixes I decided not to send them a headrest to colour match, I just used their colour on file (and it was spot on).  I got some heavy duty cleaner, 1L of colour, a small bottle of dye hardener and a small bottle of the dye top coat. I also got a spray gun as I needed a larger nozzle than the gun I had and it was only $40 extra. From memory the total was ~$450 ish. Its not cheap but the result is awesome. They did add repair bits and pieces to the quote originally and the cost came down significantly when I said I didn't need any repair products. I did it over a weekend. The only issues I had were my own; I forgot to mix the hardener into the dye two coats but I had enough dye for 2 more coats with the hardener. I also just used up all the dye because why not and i rushed the last coat which gave me some runs. Thankfully the runs are under the headrests. The gun pattern wasn't great, very round and would have been better if it was a line. It made it a little tricky to get consistent coverage and I think having done the extra coats probably helped conceal any coverage issues. I contacted them again a few months later so I could get our X5 done (who the f**k thought white leather was a good idea for a family car?!) and they said they had some training to do in Sydney and I could get a reduced rate on the leather fix in the X5 if I let them demo their product on our car. So I agreed. When I took Bec in the E39 to pick it up, I showed them the job I'd done in my car and they were all (students included) really impressed. Note that they said the runs I created could be fixed easily at the time with a brush or an air compressor gun. So, now with the two cars done I can absolutely recommend Colourlock.  I'll take pics of both interiors and create a new thread.
