the thing is they're not really open to interpretation, just misunderstanding. The Clubsprint rules for aero/body start off with (paraphrasing) "you can't do jack unless we state it below", and the Open and Pro rules start with "aero is free except for fan cars".

Well as a rule in all other forms of motorsports I've done the way rules are generally read are:

If it doesn't say you can do it, then you can't do it.

But I just wonder if the organisers have different ideas of the rules in their heads.

Since its only 14 days til the event starts and I still haven't driven my car I'm not overly fussed this year because I've got no chance of being competitive regardless. But it would be nice to have it all clarified once and for all.

Kinda related, did you sort out the issues with theBW turbos? Or is that what is causing you to miss it?

Yes and no. It's kind of caused me to miss it, but I've had so many little delays in getting my car back together that they've finally caught up with me now and I'm out of time.

I probably started getting ready too late too which hasn't helped.

I had to rebuild my bottom end, which I wasn't counting on doing, but when we pulled my head off a few weeks back we found that one of my bores was fairly badly scored from what we believe was a piece of an exhaust wheel that had got sucked back into the engine. The top of the piston also had a lump of buildup on it, again, possibly a piece of exhaust wheel that had melted onto the piston. That put me back the several weeks I'm running late by as I've just got my bottom end back in the last few days.

In regards to the BW turbos, not sure if they are fixed or not as I haven't turned a key since November last year. I have 2 new ones on now but until they hit the dyno, or track, I don't really know.

Fingers crossed it'll all be fine when she finally gets going. I've made some decent changes to the whole car so I can't wait to sit in her again!

In most all professional motorsports ie: F1,NASCAR,Moto GP etc its a case of "If its doesnt say you CANT do it then you can!"

IMO what will happen in this WTA event is some rich guy will build a correctly, turn up to an event do 3-4 laps, set a time 3 seconds faster than anyone and watch from his air conditioned transporter. Chris Eaton has/had this opportunity but again it looks like too much cash can never make up for bad advice.... I mean 500+K and he eats engines faster than Megatron!!! Oh and i wonder how much faster he would actually go if he took the entire body kit off!!!! Downforce is good, extra DRAG is really bad for a full bodied car.... The Lotus team/car is the smartest operator! He puts in W.Luff to drive.... Cheapest 2+ seconds per lap money can buy...

You can see from the pics on the WTAC website that many Clubsprint cars are not legal, so its not like the organisers aren't aware that they are modified well beyond the rules now, it won't be a surprise at scrutineering. The organisers could simply do a mail-out to entrants with a reminder about the rules and what they mean if they were concerned about cars complying with the rules. There's still a couple of weeks before the event

All of these aero components not allowed in clubsprint could simply be removed. Its not like they're welded on. Or if they can't comply with Clubsprint, bump them up to Open like they do at CAMS speed events - if they find a car's not legal for a class, they reclassify it if possible. there's no need to turn anyone away.

The entrants should read the rules. Its not like WTAC rules are complicated or hard to interpret like some IPRA or Sport Sedan rules.

I dont think they can simply bump them up. This may throw the numbers right out and may require re-working of the schedule to allow the increased cars in Open the same amount of lap time. Thats not even considering the impact of increased traffic for Open. I dont think it would work.

Someone mentioned they can see some of the cars on the website that clearly contravene the rules. If so then the organisers can and should do something about it but how many cars do the organisers see prior to the event?

Again, make the rules clear and enforce them.

BTW I am not hung on this, I am merely spectating and am going to enjoy the even for what it is.

Boxhead - that new food area is fantastic. Really nice environment with TV's, lap times, good food, nice seating and beer. I was really impressed. I just hope for WTAC they open it up and make it twice as big as it will be a popular place.

It's quite simple. No rescheduling is required. If a Club entrant is found to have modifications that should see it in Open, it's merely re-categorized and see it logged as an Open car. No need to run it in Open sessions.

The competitor should get a short grace period to allow modifying the car back to Club rules. If they cannot do so, they would be free to obtain and run semi-slicks as it is now an Open car.

However, if the competitor has deliberately misrepresented their entry as Club level in the hope of obtain a "default" Open Class entry, they're excluded from the event.

That's how I see it anyhoo.

Fair point but I still don't think its fair for the Open class guys. As you know, they allow a certain number of cars to enter into each category. This is to ensure a fair amount of track time with hopefully not as much traffic per group or session. If more cars are bumped up that is more traffic to contend with and more chance of ruining a lap. It could certainly work to ensure cars dont miss out, but not entirely fair if the numbers are high that do not comply (as is being suggested here).

Anyway, that is enough on that I reckon. Noone is ever going to agree and ultimately what I or anyone else thinks doesn't really matter. Will let the organisers deal with it. We can be hopeful that they are aware of it and are looking for ways to deal with it next year, fairly for everyone.

BTW - the Cyber Evo does not look as bad as the initial photos suggested. Cant wait it to see it run. Also, how many EVO's are competing this year!!! There are a stack of them in all classes!!!

When rules start with things like "Cars must be presented as manufactured except for..." then you can't do anything unless they specifically say you can. That's Clubsprint Class.

When the rules say "Aero is free except for mechanical devices to generate downforce", then you can do whatever your imagination can dream up. That's Open and Pro Classes.

As Ben said, reclassifying the cars doesn't have to alter the schedule at all - just the results. Reclassified cars (ie ones that couldn't take their splitters and canards off) stil run in their originally allocated sessions. Too bad if that's less track time than other Open class cars - if they entered the correct class or had a Clubsprint legal car, that wouldn't have happened.

We've been getting asked for more photos of our race R35 that we shipped over from Japan as we put the finishing touches on it for WTAC, so here are a couple to tide everyone over :)

    • The average previous owner for these cars were basically S-chassis owners in the US. Teenagers or teenager-adjacent. I often tell people that neglect is easier to fix than something that was actively "repaired" by previous owners.
    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
