Depends what sort of budget you've got for the system...

If you're looking at spending under $1k, perhaps JB or Ebay.

If you're looking at spending up to $2k, then you can venture into the world of specialists with quality gear :)

Whats your budget and we can recommend some stores...

Well its not a show car, and i dont drive around the streets with my music booming.

Car is a 3dr hatch and sort of semi collectable so not looking to cut up door trims etc as they are all in immac 1987 condition

What I have pieced together so far is:

Deck:

Pioneer DEH-8350SD

http://www.pioneer.com.au/au/products/22/121/61/DEH-8350SD/index.html

Amps:

Either a good quality 5 channel L5.1110 - http://www.soundstream.com/los/lil-wonder_amp.htm

Or a 4 channel Sony Explode GTX6040 for speakers http://www.sony.com.au/product/xm-gtx6040 : and Soundstream STL2.350 2 channel bridged for subs

Speakers:

Front - In the front plastic dash it takes 4" speakers. I can remove the original lower sill kick panel and put in a custom pod to take 6.5" splits. I am thinking about putting speakers in the dash and lower kick panel, but dash will probably be of no value and better putting the money into a better quality split.

Rear - 6x9s in a new custom parcel shelf as I dont want to cut up the original one. I also doubt the original hatch would be suitable for big heavy speakers in them.

Subs - I am guessing a single 12" in a good box that will go behind the split fold hatch seats.

I have not decided on brands of speakers and frankly dont care about brands of speakers. The only thing I am picky on is the deck and happy with the Pioneer deck I have found

Last time I played with stereos was 10 years ago and have not had kept pace of things. I used to run Polk 6x9s and splits, Kicker subs and Rockford amps.

Not sure I want to go to that expense again and it seems that single 12s give pretty good sound these days. So rather then two cheaper 12" subs I suspect I would get better sound and still work out cheaper to get a better quality single 12" with plenty of nice clean power. Seems Sony and MB Quartz have reasonable priced splits at around $150 and a pair of 6x9s for the same price. Subs have me stumped, so much has changed in sub technology the past ten years :(

So budget isnt huge, but neither are my needs. Its a rattly old 80s car so need a stereo to hush up the rattles

TL:DR

But forget about the rears or a 5 channel amount.

Spend your money on a decent quality 2 channel amp to power the front splits.. Monoblock for the sub. And run your existing rear speakers off the headunit.

That's the basic SQ setup.

I need something in the rear, sun affected 1987 paper cone speakers dont sound that great, even if only being powered off the deck :)

Fair enough, forget about the rears alltogether unless you frequently carry rear passengers

fark off ya kent......all you need is a loud exhaust.....or are you looking for something to mask the dash rattles?Coz the exhaust also works for that....thats why you get the impression my car drives so well

Well weld me up a titanium exhaust like on your car. By the way I am calling your car Beelzebub :)

Blah, blah..its a hatch not a coupe/sedan. So like a 180SX a lot of noise etc comes from the rear and echos around off the glass and the old std shelf. So will be installing a new shelf and sound deadening so may as well throw some speakers back there to try and dull the noise...and with an old school, heavily compromised front...I dont have any good locations for speakers, or even doors thick enough to take a decent sized magnet etc. So need the rear to help as much as it can

Others, thanks for the tips. Hopefully car will have rego in the next 2 weeks and will get something sorted and speak with Freeway Car Audio.

Freeway car audio is a good place to visit. I've gotten a few things from their.

Phatt Audio Concepts is known as one of the le' premier places to get your audio equipment installed. They can also source audio equipment.

They also had their own TV show called 'Nsayne TV on Car Audio' and handle projects such as 'Alpine's own demo car'.

Check out some of their Car Audio episodes and you may want to go with 'Phatt Audio Concepts'. :D

Jaycar also sell speakers and subs. All that have won many awards when compared against name brand equipment.

Any audio shop will try and sell you pioneer & alpine gear and judging from your requests, you are after a basic set. For the same money as basic brand name kit you can get a decent setup from Jaycar.

Good luck

I am a bit nervous about handing the car over to people. New car itis and the first person to have touched it and charged me good money has hacked it up a little. I can do that with the best of them and it wont cost me anything.

So , figure this will be a back to my youth thing and will do it all myself. Thanks for your advice though. I still need to buy the speakers and subs so may swing by a few places this weekend and listen to a few brands/models

    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
