Well, the hoist is installed and today the gearbox came out. I can't believe I was able to remove that huge gearbox by myself, I'm glad I got a transmission jack when I bought the hoist now. :)

I managed to fit up the 6spd to check clearances, I was happy to see the 350z mounts bolted straight up to the stock holes in the floor, and all the engine bolts were right, other than the starter motor holes being out. (due to the turbo) I will have to drop the engine to fit the 350z sump now, no big deal. The starter will have to be relocated to the drivers side.

The gearstick hole doesn't line up, I will have to trim it an inch or so longer.

I have found some more parts through Nuwan, apparently the brake booster is smaller on the manual to accommodate the clutch master so I have a clutch pedal assy with master, a brake pedal assy with booster and clutch line coming soon. Still searching for the handbrake and console, they will most likely have to come from Japan.

That's a closer fit than I thought it would be looking at the gearbox pic. Good luck with the project. Watching out of interest, but with no intention to change mine.

If there was an aftermarket gearbox controller or manualised valve body for the re5 I would think about keeping the auto, Nissan had a f-retarded program the auto ecu unfortunately.

I'm pretty sure the design brief for the M35 didn't include "ensure future owners have the ability to successfully track these semi luxurious station wagons", lol.

Whilst I'm not happy about the lack of 'simple modifications' available for our platform (g'box included), I don't harbour any grudges against the designers/engineers. They did give us a very nice allround package. It's just some people continue to push the envelope waaay past where any decent engineer could have foreseen.

Hands up who on here would know where to start at "programming an auto TCU"? :ermm:

:stupid: including me, lol

I would be happy if it just changed gears properly, the thing just never drops down to a lower gear when asked. An australian market would have shunned it if sold here new imo. Yes it has been made worse by the laggier turbo but that's what the stall converter should remedy.

The power holding capabilities are always improving. At the end of the day it's just cooling the fluid enough now.

As I have the full workshop manual for the re5, and a few spare boxes, I would most definitely have a crack at tuning a programmable aftermarket controller, if there was one available... There are other options, the re4ro1 is too weak and any other auto will need major modification to fit. Perhaps there will be an awd manual option down the track I can take advantage of but for now I'm stuck with the 350z box. Things could be worse, they are quite strong internally from my research.

so what was wrong with the r34 gtr box?

cut and shunt possible?

DCDC is working on it, havent heard anything in a while though. Got mentioned here http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/topic/390944-vq25det-aftermarket-camshafts/

leon, i remember speaking to someone about a custom controller. you cant just activate a solenoid as it will break things. they need to be eased on or duty cycled etc.

with a scope and some electronics, youd be able to tell what goes to the transmission and emulate it yourself. there arent THAT many wires heading down there :P

It has to be me doing all the hard work again, doesn't it Iain. :P

Whilst I am confident it could be done, the controllers on the market have no guarantee they will work, and at a cost of around $1000 it's too expensive to gamble on for an auto that still won't handle the track very well. Making my own kit is in the too hard basket, I haven't designed an electronic circuit in 15 years.

I have invested too much into the rwd manual conversion now, no turning back. I seriously looked at the awd conversion Tom, the bell housing would have to be cut and shut, and the transfer case would have to be relocated 160mm further back. I may still be able to fit my spare 33 gtr box in there one day but for now the 350z box is so much easier.

    • Since winter isn't that harsh anymore in Poland, i will definetely drive it 365 days a year 😉. But if the snow hits i will try it for sure and let U know. Only swap i am planning to do is of course R34 GTR front 😍.
    • Hey. Very valuable information about pitwork, I will pay attention when buying any consumable parts 🙏 As for the carpets - I got a handful of information from nengun, from which it appears that indeed the carpets for the driver's side are OEM. They are not able to show me any pictures due to the long chain of different sales entities but after I place the order, as soon as the goods arrive at the nengun warehouse from which they will send the shipment to me they can send me photos and if my purchase differs from OEM I can immediately return it / cancel the purchase. I think I will give it a try 😉. Of course i'll let you know what's what as soon as i get them P.s. I know the topic is not relevant to the thread, but both nengun and amayama have these SICK 😍 trunk room lamps available. Do you know anyone who ordered them? I need to have one in my car
