Ok im not near my car so I cant check.. and I want to buy. What is everyone running and what pipe dia am I looking at?

Does it get cold enough in sydney to require a thermostat?

Going to route to new cooler then through rad...

Repco - they sell re-branded PWR products. Get them to give you their catalogue flick through and pick the one you want.

3/8ths from memory. Thermostat is neither here nor there. Depends if you are driving 10 mins or 30 mins to work.

Running a Derale Series 7000 cooler on mine with one of those blue thermostats (I am also incorporating the OEM radiator inlet/outlets before both the thermostat and the cooler)

Comes with 3/8 hose but the barbs out of the transmission and OEM radiator are 8mm so recommend to get some 8mm clear plastic hose from Bunnings etc to use on the barb as a liner which will will out the inside of the 3/8 hose.

Why did you go radiator before the aftermarket cooler? I would of thought it is better to take some work off the radiators in these things?

Take work off the radiator? Man, I can only get over 80 degrees coolant temp if I sit on the side of the road idling for 5+ minutes.

What will happen with the external cooler before the radiator is that you will possibly be warming up the trans fluid on its way back to transmission.

Most efficient way of cooling is to have the ext cooler on the return line back to the transmission. If you are concerned about it getting too cold, just use a thermostat.

I was under the impression vq's had issues with cooling?

Just ordered 20L of matic j for 176 $ + gst so ill do cooler with shift kit... I noticed yesterday it was fairly warm and car seemed to feel it. I also noticed the clutch fan to be alot louder..

what side is the transmission inlet and outlet ?

They do run quite warm... without the cooling mod from Scott.

The line that enters the passenger side of the radiator is the trans outlet.

The problem with our auto is that it needs to be up to operating temp before it works right. If you go removing the line from the radiator or cooling the fluid to a more sensible temperature, it will drive like crap, or worse never drop in to 5th.

The way I got around it was to cut the two temp signal wires at the TCU and drop varisters over them. This tells the gearbox it is already at operating temp, allowing me to cool the fluid as much as I like and the bonus is it doesn't go into overheat limp mode on the track anymore.

I love those kinds of mods - big win for little outlay. Not necessary for me but I like it anyway

Does someone still have an active link for those thermostats? Or possibly the suitable operating temperature for them? I see there are a few options out there including single inline type or supply and return type thermos, could anyone recommend what to go for as my set up will be stand alone cooler seperate from the radiator, hoping to fit it in somewhere behind the grille but always open to more advice, many thanks

The trans thermostats we used? Those ones linked, but there are heaps of different designs, most of which take up a lot more room.

Loading up the radiator by fitting coolers in front of it will not only make the radiator ineffective but overheat your aircon condensor too. Shame there are no side ducts. :/

Need the Nismo front bar; a bit of side ducting there...

    • Was going to say the car pulls up nicely everywhere, especially going into that last long right hander before the main straight. Looks like a lot of fun.
    • Hey Dave, welcome aboard! Good to see another soon-to-be Stagea owner here. The wagons are awesome — plenty of space, still got that Skyline DNA, and loads of potential if you’re into mods. Definitely post up pics when you get it, everyone here loves seeing new builds. What model/year are you looking at?
    • See if you can thermal epoxy a heatsink or two onto it?
    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
