hey all, i bought my r32 with one of the bearings destroy(metal pieces everywhere) which in turn rendered the box useless, i had another rb20 box installed $750 all up.

But now im seeing that this new box has a small whine nothing too bad, but today was the first i actually gave it in 1-2-3 gear, and when it into 2nd it went in like it was going explode if i did it a few more times. Are all 20 box's like this, or is this box probably stuffed aswell?

thanks

It feels so bad when going into 2nd quickly, im not snapping it in but just fast, feels like its not far from crunching, the box just feel weak. Im curious if this is like all the 20 boxes.

wrong.

Its the same box as whats in most of the 5 speed RWD cars, except R33 GTST and Z32 twin turbo IIRC.

It shouldnt feel like that, if anything it should feel better than an RB25 box on quick shifts. Lighter gearsets and components would make it easier to change between cogs.

That box has a problem. I can shift like an absolute MOFO in my S14 (and every other 5 speeder I've driven) and it is the same box. It could be the clutch, but you should take it back to the mechanic and get them to sort it out.

And R34 GTT.

All the 20 boxes I have driven with (4 from memory) have felt extremely fragile in comparison to the 25 box. That said, Scott knows more about these things than me. Best get it checked out.

Yeap, I wasn't sure about the GTT as I know it comes 6 speed lol couldnt recall if there was a 5 speed model also, but am sure they would use the same box as the 33.

The smaller 5 speed is definitely pretty fragile in comparison, but shouldn't feel like its going to explode. Should just feel lighter to work with than the bigger boxes, and like I said should shift easier/quicker with less effort.

If i were you id be diluting the gearbox oil with some engine oil, thats what i did and my box went from crunching, jarring and needing a rebuild to now being smooth and awesome

If the oils too thick or its overfilled it will not help.

Fwiw certain trucks use the same oil for the box as they do for the motor (5w30) so the motor oil suggestion isn't a bad thing and can help.

Personally I would take it back. You paid good money and got a shit gearbox.

    • I've looked up the parts number (41011AL501). It's around $700 OEM. Usually our Infiniti G35 here in Canada have interchangeable parts with my Stagea but the parts number are not the same. I have looked around and it seems the JDM 2005 V35 Skyline (which is the same as our G35) has the same caliper but I cannot confirm. And I can't find a repair kit. The inner brake pads drags on the rotor, seems to be rusty piston. Thanks for the info by the way
    • This coupled with 6-9 speed autos with ridiculously short gearing is why these modern shitbox cars always seem so fast off the line. If it wasn't for those things, Raptors would not seem fast. The problem we have is there is a driveability gap between a more gentle take off and a wheelspinning sideways launch. The difference between ankle flex required to achieve one and ankle flex required to achieve the other is about 0.5°.
    • Yeah I think I'm also with the opposite here. It's 'hard to keep up with traffic' because in the real world I'm accelerating with 15% throttle and they are pinning it. It feels like I'm being an overt dickhead at anything above 15% throttle, so the car sounds like I'm being an overt dickhead to keep up with/get ahead of traffic when I'm really just trying to drive with traffic. There would be no issue 'keeping up with traffic' if we used the same level of throttle input/aggression to drive around. People really do just drive around with their foot nearly pinned in econoboxes.
    • To be fair it's the other way around. 300kw is boring in a modern Golf or BMW. They are so competent / well-engineered / devoid of emotion that you have to go stupid fast to feel anything. Whereas the <300kw RB still makes all the right noises and it feels good to drive. Can pull off at the lights with the turbo whooshing and the blow-off pssshing and feel like the coolest kid on the block. Just don't look to the side where you'll see the bored housewifes in their shitbox Yaris/Corolla/Camry that kept up because you didn't go fast at all
    • 300kW is so boring in a Skyline, you'll get spanked by someone's mum's Golf with Alibaba pipes, and an email tune.
