hey guys, i've got a r34 GT-T. pretty much totally stock. I've had it for almost 2 years and haven't had a single problem. but just yesterday all of a sudden it wouldn't start. I drove it fine and about an hour later tried driving it again and it wont start at all.

The car sounds like its about to start so its not battery related, but it simply doesn't fire up. the NRMA guy said there isn't enough pressure in the fuel line and when he sprayed fuel from a can into the engine the car sounded like it wanted to start but simply couldnt.

I really need the car fixed ASAP. Is this a common problem? I am wondering would this have caused my spark plugs to get fouled also? as i tried starting it for a fairly long while.

And is it likely to be the fuel pump? is there a method to test what is actually wrong?

Thanks heaps.

Sounds like a fuel pump, easy way to check is get a test light and make sure your getting power to it first. Or if your really lazy get a friend to turn the key to the 'on position' while you have your head in the boot, listening for a slight hum from the pump. As it should prime the fuel rail before start up.

If no hum more than likely it will be the fuel pump. Bosch do a universal pump that fits in the housing perfectly, otherwise Walbro do a few reasonably priced units for standard replacement. Just call lube mobile out and get them to do it in your driveway. They did mine, only took the guy bout an hour to diagnose, get parts and fit it!

Your fuel pump is likely on its way out. Its an easy method to replace it. Unplug the fuel line from the pump and puy it into a bucket then start the car. If no or little fuel.comes out the pump is gone. Make sure the pump is getting power. Might be a fuse. They screw up because they wear out, seize, sick up dirt etc. Its an old compoment. Easy to fix.

oh okay. lube mobile sounds expensive probably give it a go myself.

doubt its the battery because it was tested with the 12v source the nrma have

If you have no idea about anything, paying someone an hour labour to fix the problem is not expensive. Or you can f**k around for ages and make a ness of it yourself

rather do things myself on the car, so at least i can learn it. i mean its just a fuel pump, shouldn't be too hard to replace.

anyways, yeah just looking for general suggestions on what it could be if it's not the fuel pump.

and a quick question, when i turn the key twice so the car and audio n all that is on, but im not holding the key in igititon to start it. at that time, should the fuel pump immediately start pumping fuel? even though the engine isn't on? how does that part work exactly?

okay so i've done a lot of searching around and think the best/cheapest replacement for the car is the bosch 040 intank fuel pump? its costing $210 at just jap.

My car is pretty much stock and i doubt ill be upgrading it heavily any time soon, so i dont really need a high flow pump, is the stock oem part cheaper? what is the best replacement pump/cheapest i should use?

and its an in tank pump, not external inline one?

The Walbro needs to be wired to the battery through a relay and fuse, there is a 'how to' around if you search.

it doesnt "need" to be does it?...it just wont run at full potential if its not...but it will run fine as a replacement pump...

unless you are planning power mods for now just buy one from one of the many cars being wrecked...cost nothing...problem solved

I have seen failures and also car's stalling/running shit when wired to the factory wiring, they are supposed to run on 12V minimum, any less can cause the windings to burn out or pressure fluctuations.

Nismo/Tomei pumps seem to run fine on the lower voltage, as do stock pumps. Most aftermarket pumps require the wiring mod.

thanks for all the help guys. changed the fuel filter and the fuel pump. the old pump was not working at all.

i hooked this one up with stock voltage as the relay system is a bit out of my understand (electronics). but it seems to run fine, at least as a stock replacement. might be the placebo but i actually feel like there is a slight performance increase.

Thanks again guys. :)

    • I've replaced the front brakes of my NA to 324 brembos and 350z calipers: i'm going for 225/40-18 up front and 245/35-18 in the back. I have Rays 7.5*19 ET35(225/35) in the front with 5mm spacers otherwise the calipers "lock up/ won't rotate". When i use the calculator i come up with 8*18 ET30 for 225/40...... but not sure i get problems with the calipers. Anyone riding around with 18 inch. that can confirm "that it'll fit"? In the back it's 7.5*9 ET30 (245/30) with the 5mm spacers, but there is no problem with the standard small brakes, so i want to take 8.5*18 ET25 (245/35).
    • Lol.. but then.. always come back to a JDM..
    • Glad to hear. If possible, get your tuner to check air's to make sure everything is still where it should be.
    • The problem with FB/Insta/Reddit etc comments relating to cars is simple. You get to ask a question once, and get one round of replies. For things that can actually be answered in a few lines of text, once, it's fine. After 6 hours, your original question is lost to the void. There are no follow ups, additional questions, anything. No project car is ever such a simple list of questions to ask. You need discussion.
    • Welcome.  Here's what I have noticed about forum vs FB..... FB; seems to be wallet racing, and the same few questions asked over and over. There *may* be some groups that are closer knit, but most have changed for the worse. SAU; unfortunately, no longer in its glory days. But....genuine people with similar interests. Not all about how much you spent and saying you dont have enough power. Sooooooo much knowledge available. Have personally seen people post up about literally topics I made myself, asking on FB like no one has done it before. Most has been done, and most of that is here.   If you ever feel like just general chatting theres the wasteland.  Other interests are also generally covered in other areas of the forum. Hope you enjoy hanging around. We would love to have you.   P.s. nice 32 😀
