It seems that we are often behind on tuning RBs in the uk so I thought I would get some advice from here.

I am putting a step two 2.8 hks engine in my stagea . It has stage 2 cams and a flowed head and all other relevant oil mods etc,

Previously the car had a rb26 with 2860-5s and was runing around 575 . This is before I killed it......... which is another story

The turbos are supposed to max out at somewhere between 600-650 ( sorry its bhp not kw over here)

I am tempted to use the 5s as it should about as responsive as you could get plus of course I have the turbos, pipework and induction already.

If I am going to change I am drawn towards the single route and would welcome any suggestions.

some info

The engine has run a t51kai and produced silly power which I dont want or need .

It has been refreshed and the rest of the car will cope with the power I am looking at .

700 bhp atf would be nice and is achieveable but I am not sure how much different it would spool up to keeping the 5s

as said before any suggestions appreciated (as long as they are sensible)

Thanks for the replies I had looked the garret gtx 3582R and the precision range

Agree. -5's are borderline too big for a 26 but awesome on anything bigger. Mine were a bit laggy on my 26 but can't wait too see what they're like on my 30.

The 5s were fine on my 26 which had stage 1 cams and was tuned with an Fcon. Obviously they didnt spool up by 3000rpm but I wouldnt have called them laggy for a turbos putting out 575.

My issue is that it will run out of steam too easily with a step 2 tuned RB28

I think you'll find -5's to be too big for a 2.8 in a stagea. It's the weight that's the killer. You wont move 400kg+ more as easily.

My vote would be for r34 N1's if you wan't somthing usable, unless you'r just chasing numbers... and T51r it is.

Im not chasing numbers infact the exact opposite which is why I dont want a t51 .

The problem isnt that the -5s will be too big it is that they might be too small. As said earlier in the thread the 5s were fine on the car when it had a 26 with stage 1 cans and no head work

The 28 is a step 2 HKS motor with stage 2 cams and a fully flowed head

As for weight the car making a huge difference - with a that 26 set up it ran 30-130 in 13.2 seconds on a v box so I am sure they wont be too big,

But all input appreciated

Keep the 5's hands down if you already have them mate I done a few km's Piggaz car today and its absolutely the most amazing car I have ever driven  It most definitely will not run out of puff with the step 2 2.8L pm piggaz he will gladly give you some great insight into your setup hes very knowledgable and a good fella and if you ever rode in his car you would take his advice because its just got grunt everywhere

Thanks for the input especially the dyno print out. And yes I certainly did read it thanks

And based on that and also other advice over here I have decided that the 5s stay for sure

Should be interesting to drive once it is back on the road. I will definately have to check piggaz's spec to see how it compares with mine

And If I do ever want to chase numbers I can always have it mapped for E85.

As a matter of interest: what mods did you have, and what boost were you running the -5s at on the 2.6L setup?

Sounds very similar to what I have now, and I go back for the power tune in a couple of weeks: would be nice to have some knowledge of a similar setup, although I'm tuning for midrange rather than outright power...

Stick with the -5's.

The 2.8 will help with the spool of the -5's.

I have seen a few RB28 with -5's and that seems to be the nice setup.

Are you going for the HKS V-Cam 2.8lt?

Head was stock , stage 1 tomei cams . greddy induction, mapped using fcon v pro gold . ran 1.5 bar through a profec b controller

adustable cam pullies. tomei rods and pistons

VERY similar to mine: Tomei Type B cams, Greddy inlet, Power FC, AVC-R, adjustable cam gears, JE pistons and Spool rods.

Was looking at 22psi also.

Interesting to see yours peaks at about the same revs as mine did: Pretty sure I start to taper off at around 7000rpm.

at 20psi running lean (fuel pump was too small), it pulled 458HP at all 4 on a Dyno Dynamics.

    • Yeah pretty impressive hey, good to see quality products not over-shooting their prices. That's what drew me to buy the hypergear turbo, just a shame I've never got the chance to see it in action
    • Thank you GTSBoy and MBS206 I have done the compression test with the motor out of the vehicle, reason for the test was to see if I needed to remove the head and do rings etc while its out. I'm in the process of respraying the vehicle and tidying up a few things. Story behind it all is I've just purchased the skyline and it was running when I got it, never drove it on the street though as I wanted to pull it down and do it all up again before registering it. the gentleman I purchased it from told me the motor has a forged bottom end and has a decent tune through it but I was going to pull the sump off anyway to see if it is a forged bottom end. that's why I thought id do a compression test beforehand.
    • Man, I'm kind of amazed that the price of the turbo has not changed in 7 years. Everything else is inflating beyond reason, but not this? Good on Tao / hypergear I guess? Anyways, good luck with the sale!
    • I'm selling my brand new, in the box, never used Hypergear ATR45 - and I had some additions I paid for a few yrs back when I purchased it. Never ended up having the rest of the money to add all the mods at once, so I just ended up slowly selling each part. I originally had it internally gated, with the dump pipe, however I found it was incompatible with what I was going to use it for, so I contacted (I think Ken) from Hypergear, and he and I messaged back and forth & he got me to ship the turbo back, where they modified it & made it externally gated, and gave me the 5 bolt dump pipe attachment for custom welding. (Photos below) This turbo like I said has never touched the inside of an engine bay, it's completely brand new, never used, been sitting in the same box it arrived in, covered in plastic & all. Below are the photos of it: And while the guys at Hypergear were making it in-shop, they sent me some photos of the process: I'm looking at selling this just because I'm in need of the money right now, and don't have plans on modifying the 34 anytime soon - and from reviews & peformance sheets, this turbo had amazing results back when I was researching. The turbo was purchased in 2018 for $1.9k, with the mods I got added on. Looking at the website now, for the same turbo they sell (ATR45SAT), with the current addons it adds up to $1830 for the turbo Current addons included: - Bolted dump adaptor - Ball bearing CHRA - Braided oil feeding line So I'm looking to possibly sell it for around $1800, with shipping included in that 1.8k, It cost me around $120 to ship - so yeah thought I'd throw it out there and see if anyone was interested in purchasing. Cheers!
