Hi guys,

My r33 gtst has recently started intermittently overheating.

It is completely random. Sometimes, it can drive for days being fine whilst other times it will overheat immediately.

when it does start to overheat I can stop the car, let it cool down and then its fine to go again without overheating.

Only appears to lose water when it overheats and comes out the reserve.

I've tried another thermostat..... still the same. Any ideas?

Never had this problem myself in a skyline, but my run around (shitbox) honda integra used to have that problem - turns out there was an electrical issue in which the fan would randomly (& intermittently) stop working.

Is it just random, even at low speed?

Do you still have the original radiator?

It is getting old so I'd say replace the radiator.

Mine would start to overheat when driven at 100km/hr. Went through the steps and once radiator was replaced all good.

Thanks for the replies!

So far:

New Thermostat hasnt changed anything

New radiator cap hasnt changed anything

The electrical fan appears to be working

Not the original Radiator - It got replaced a few years ago

I happens randomly so Its got me stumped :(

thanks for the replies.

All work done professionally by a mechanic (not me!) so quite a few things checked.

Thermostat is genuine Nissan.

All (or if not most!!) hoses have been replaced

Yes still has the standard clutch fan

I've never done a water pump in it

O.K. How many km has the engine done?

Highly doubt its the water pump, especially if the teltale isnt leaking but have to ask anyway

Does it need coolant ever?

Have you measured the temperature with a temp gun or something like that? Just in case the sensor is a bit funny and giving false readings

Not to hijack the thread, but I've had overheating issues lately too..

When I'm on the move, the car is fine, but when I'm stopped, that's when it can overheat (and the temp jumps up pretty quickly)... And it happens randomly too!!

Found a whole lot of shit in the radiator fluid and overflow bottle, so I had the radiator completely flushed and the fluid replaced... Any thoughts??

I'm thinking maybe water pump, hoses or fan.. Anyone have any similar issues that can give some advise/insight??

If its overheating when its stopped and not overheating when its moving, then wouldnt the logical problem be the radiator fan? Seen as you have had the radiator serviced this is pretty much all it can be. The fan doesnt do alot when the car is moving, when the car is stopped the airflow accross the radiator is created by the fan

Yeh I know, and that's what I thought.. When I took it to my mechanic a second time to check it out with me, it was fine.. One of those "does it when no one is around, and doesn't do it when u want it to" kind of things...

Just thought I'd post up incase it could be something else.. Probably best thing is to just sort out the fan regardless..?

Well if you haven't done the radiator in recent years take it out and get the top taken off and either clean it out or get a new one if necessary. If its getting blocked it will still work better with a 100km breeze going through it than when stationary.

    • Just throwing around ideas, does it need to be in the compressor cover? Why not the hot side piping?

    • Why are you so adamant on going M12? Why not follow Brad (GTSBoy) suggestion. You're talking moving from a 1/8" size, to a 1/2" effectively. 4 times bigger. Why skip the commonly available sizes in between? The bigger you go, the more likely you are to strip the threads out at a later date, as guaranteed, someone will put a huge spanner on the M12 and really tighten it up, and you're only in thin wall, so not a lot of threads to engage!
    • Hi. Yeah thanks. Car is already at tuners and it staying there to resolve "many" issues they do not like. So it is in a good hands. Getting a good tune on that Nistune ECU too so the car would be good. Just needs a little tune up and love.
