Have you replaced the std rubber intake pipe yet ?

Yes with 80mm stainless lobster, hectic flutters with no bov lol

Need a video of sututututu [emoji2]

Will try to get one. I'm going to have to disable my antilag/launch to do at standstill. CBF but I'll try[emoji12]

Update. I got sick of the hectic flutters and dose and reverted to the stock airbox. I think the final straw was when a toothless bogan in a vs commodore was hanging out the passenger window giving me the thumbs up when he saw me taking off. Not the kind of attention I'm after. Lol.

In other news, I have been quite busy over the last month. I have replaced my exhaust manifold gaskets and studs as a couple decided they would snap off. I also got around to replacing the upper intake manifold gasket too. None of this had any impact on my holding boost issue.

I managed to get to the bottom of the boost issue. It ended up being an issue with the intake snorkel not sitting properly due to the new alloy rad being too thick. The snorkel was angled up towards the bonnet and was effectively making the air entry point narrower and becoming a restriction at high boost/revs. Can't believe this was the damn problem. Shakes head. I'm going to heat it up with a heat gun and mould it so it sits properly around the new rad.

f**k you snorkel.

Since I thought that all my issues had been solved, I thought I'll put the car to the test and what better way to do that than a track day.

I entered the demo class for the Vic time attack yesterday. There was only 6 cars entered in this class and less than 40 cars across all classes. There was stuff all traffic and plenty of track time. The last 2 sessions it was only me and 1 other car a 370z sharing the track. I completed all of the 6 x 12 min sessions. The car didn't miss a beat. The only things I did was adjust tyre pressure and pour fuel into it. The issues I had at sandown are gone. The brakes worked quite well as this circuit is less demanding of them. The same can't be said for the driver. I was a bit hesitant as the last time I was at the island I crashed my old car. I progressively got quicker through the day. I started the day doing 2:02's and worked it down to a 159:76 on my final lap of the day. This is 1 second off (slower)my previous pb in my s15 but I'm quite happy with that for now. There was a slight mix up with the timing, my car was no.31 and was associated to the wrong car description and name. There's probably a bloke in a pos Lexus is200 boasting to his mates that he did under 2 mins at Phillip island. Lol.

Also weighed the car at the weigh bridge at the track. Came in at 1423kg with an almost full tank of fuel, full interior, 18 inch rims with 265's all round + half roll cage. It was a little less than I was expecting. I was surprised and happy at the same time. My s15 at the same weigh bridge was 1380 with full fuel. Maybe all the carbon fibre bits have reduced a fair bit of weight.

I'm surprised he didn't try to race you.

I'm surprised he didn't try to race you.

He did, I just didn't realise though. Lol

noooooooooo need more dose :(

Dosed out for now brah. If it makes you feel any better, I did run the pod at the track. Plenty of sutututu[emoji3]

A bit of an update, not much has happened over the last couple of months. Did a hill climb at haunted hills, car performed very well and had no issues. The Achilles 123s tyres have now seen better days. The rears lasted 2 track days and about 5000 street km before being on the indicators. They grip very well but longevity is poor. They where a false economy. Ive swapped them around front to back so I can get another track day out of them and i'll probably move on to some rs3's.

The car has had a few minor changes, a gfb bov for a choice of woosh, sututu (so Johnny dosepipe doesn't get upset)or silence depending on the flavour of the month, a pod filter semi housed in a stock airbox (more sututu) and a hard wired upgraded fuel pump (dw340lph) in prep for E85. This required a tweaking of the fuel maps and an extra 12rwkw where found, making a total of 260rwkw on BP98. An ethanol sensor has also found its way onto the return fuel line and I have finally got around to fitting an air temp sensor. Naughty me has been driving around for the last 10 months without one.

Flex fuel is on the horizon, everything has been setup, just waiting for the tank to be empty of 98. I'm pretty much running on fumes atm, so hoping to drain out the remainder over the weekend and dump a jerry can worth of E85 in there. Hopefully I can get the thing to start so I can try to sort out cold and hot starting and tune the light load compensation table so I can drive it around for the next week to flush all that yucky 98 out and bring the E content up to 83-85.

Hopefully everything goes well and its tuned over the next couple of weeks. A big thank you to our resident adaptronic expert, Johnny (dosepipesutututu), ive been breaking his chops with a million and 1 questions on how to set this all up and do some basic tuning on it. Thanks mate. A couple of pics for now and ill post some more later.

Nearly ran out of juice on the way home from work. Car was cutting out around left hand turns. Luckily a united was just around the corner. I was too scared to switch the car off, in case it wouldn't start so I put in 2 litres of e85 with the car running to get home. I got home and plugged the laptop in and was sitting on 34% ethanol. I made a couple of little tweaks to the hot start and compensation table and got my jerry cans and headed back to united. Filled 2 Jerry's and put another 4 litres in the tank. Its now on E62 and running in an acceptable manner to cruise in. Just got to hope I can get it to start in the morning. Tomorrow I'll drain what's left over and pour in 20l and hope for a reading in the 80's. So far all I can say is it smells good.

Thanks swapper[emoji106] . Car started well this morning at 7 degrees, had a slight hesitation after a few seconds. I think I need to increase the post start cranking compensation a bit. I ran the fuel down again and added 12l of e85 in the tank. It's at E76 now. I did some road tuning and its happily cruising around.

I can't believe how well the car idles now and how smooth it is compared to 98. When I come to a stop at traffic lights, I have to look at the tacho to make sure the car is still running. E85 is bloody awesome[emoji3] . Can't wait to get it on a dyno and crank the boost up.

Yes it is Johnny. Will be dosing harder soon. I bit the bullet last night and went to united and filled the tank. Ended up on 78% ethanol according to the flex sensor. I'm gonna have to try and burn as much of it down as I can and refill before the tune. I really want to get the ethanol content to 83 or more. I may have to try a different united. What are peoples experience with united and what their flex sensors show? Is it consistently E85 or can it be as low as 78?

Here's a few more pics of things that have changed on the car.

I managed to pick up that hacked up airbox and pod filter in a couple of boxes of assorted RB junk that I won on ebay for $4. I ended up giving the guy $40 for it all. Felt sorry for him. The bloke was wrapped and so was I. Lol

This happened yesterday morning. Car is tuned on e85 now and responded very well to timing increases. Ended up with 312rwkw and 476nm @ just under 20psi. Yeah baby. That run was done without any additional timing below 4000rpm so the power and torque below that will be a fair bit better than what the graph shows. Was starting to run low on e85 so we stopped doing power runs after that.

The tune was done by Simon Phillips at Vic dyno hire in Ballarat. Simon has a very quick turbo datsun 1200 improved production racecar and has tuned quite a few other ip race cars. I decided to give him a go as he was available at short notice and im glad i did. It was a bit of a hike driving to ballarat but i figured i've driven further for track days and his hourly rate for dyno time was very attractive and offset the fuel costs. His service, thoroughness and attention to detail where excellent and i wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone in his area or willing and able to travel to ballarat.  Ive covered around 300km since getting the tune and the car drives like an absolute beast when on the gas and cruises beautifully in all other situations. Gotta love E85 for that.

    • See if you can thermal epoxy a heatsink or two onto it?
    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
    • So, what else.... Power. I don't know what it is making because I haven't done a post tune dyno run yet; I will when I get a chance. It was 240rwkw dead stock. Conclusion from the day....it does not need a single kw more until I sort some other stuff. It comes on so hard that I could hear the twin N1 turbos on the R32 crying, and I just can't use what it has around a tight track with the current setup. Brakes. They are perfect. Hit them hard all day and they never felt like having an issue; you can see in the video we were making ground on much lighter cars on better tyres under brakes. They are standard (red sport) calipers, standard size discs in DBA5000 2 piece, Winmax pads and Motul RBF600 fluid, all from Matty at Racebrakes Sydney. Keeping in mind the car is more powerful than my R32 and weighs 1780, he clearly knows his shit. Suspension. This is one of the first areas I need to change. It has electronically controlled dampers from factory, but everything is just way too soft for track work even on the hardest setting (it is nice when hustling on country roads though). In particular it rolls into oversteer mid corner and pitches too much under hard braking so it becomes unstable eg in the turn 1 kink I need to brake early, turn through the kink then brake again so I don't pirouette like an AE86. I need to get some decent shocks with matched springs and sway bars ASAP, even if it is just a v1 setup until I work out a proper race/rally setup later. Tyres. I am running Yoko A052 in 235/45/18 all round, because that was what I could get in approximately the right height on wheels I had in the shed (Rays/Nismo 18x8 off the old Leaf actually!). As track tyres they are pretty poor; I note GTSBoy recently posted a porker comparo video including them where they were about the same as AD09.....that is nothing like a top line track tyre. I'll start getting that sorted but realistically I should get proper sized wheels first (likely 9.5 +38 front and 11 +55 at the rear, so a custom order, and I can't rotate them like the R32), then work out what the best tyre option is. BTW on that, Targa Tas had gone to road tyres instead of semi slicks now so that is a whole other world of choices to sort. Diff. This is the other thing that urgently needs to be addressed. It left massive 1s out of the fish hook all day, even when I was trying not too (you can also hear it reving on the video, and see the RPM rising too fast compared to speed in the data). It has an open diff that Infiniti optimistically called a B-LSD for "Brake Limited Slip Diff". It does good straight line standing start 11s but it is woeful on the track. Nismo seem to make a 2 way for it.
    • Also, I logged some data from the ECU for each session (mostly oil pressures and various temps, but also speed, revs etc, can't believe I forgot accelerator position). The Ecutek data loads nicely to datazap, I got good data from sessions 2, 3 and 4: https://datazap.me/u/duncanhandleyhgeconsultingcomau/250813-wakefield-session-2?log=0&data=7 https://datazap.me/u/duncanhandleyhgeconsultingcomau/250813-wakefield-session-3?log=0&data=6 https://datazap.me/u/duncanhandleyhgeconsultingcomau/250813-wakefield-session-4?log=0&data=6 Each session is cut into 3 files but loaded together, you can change between them in the top left. As the test sessions are mostly about the car, not me, I basically start by checking the oil pressure (good, or at least consistent all day). These have an electrically controlled oil pump which targets 25psi(!) at low load and 50 at high. I'm running a much thicker oil than recommended by nissan (they said 0w20, I'm running 10w40) so its a little higher. The main thing is that it doesn't drop too far, eg in the long left hand fish hook, or under brakes so I know I'm not getting oil surge. Good start. Then Oil and Coolant temp, plus intercooler and intake temps, like this: Keeping in mind ambient was about 5o at session 2, I'd say the oil temp is good. The coolant temp as OK but a big worry for hot days (it was getting to 110 back in Feb when it was 35o) so I need to keep addressing that. The water to air intercooler is working totally backwards where we get 5o air in the intake, squish/warm it in the turbos (unknown temp) then run it through the intercoolers which are say 65o max in this case, then the result is 20o air into the engine......the day was too atypical to draw a conclusion on that I think, in the united states of freedom they do a lot of upsizing the intercooler and heat exchanger cores to get those temps down but they were OK this time. The other interesting (but not concerning) part for me was the turbo speed vs boost graph: I circled an example from the main straight. With the tune boost peaks at around 18psi but it deliberately drops to about 14psi at redline because the turbos are tiny - they choke at high revs and just create more heat than power if you run them hard all the way. But you can also see the turbo speed at the same time; it raises from about 180,000rpm to 210,000rpm which the boost falls....imagine the turbine speed if they held 18psi to redline. The wastegates are electrically controlled so there is a heap of logic about boost target, actual boost, delta etc etc but it all seems to work well
