Got some pads for the stoptechs, thanks to mr @Dose Pipe Sutututuwho pulled some strings and got me a set of the development pads Intima had for the st40 callipers in the new type D V2.0 compound.
Not sure what the difference is between v1 and 2, maybe mr dosepipe can chime in and comment.

Will hopefully put the stoptechs and the v2 pads through a torture test this Saturday at Sandown if the weather holds up and see how they stack up compared to the stock sumitomos and v1 pads. Will update with results if it happens.

Na, tampered on Saturday. As much as i dislike tampered events and really do like the wrx club events, rexmas is untimed and more of a family day thing. I really want to test my new brake setup out, so the choice is clear. For the record, the reason i dislike tampered is because they wont accept cams licences and make you buy their own licence these days + they book in a million cars. I'll wear it this time, just because i want to test the brakes. dream boats.

 

 

Ah yeah, rexmas is awesome, went once and enjoyed it.

I've read loads of things about Tampered and their methods, with million of cars on track, your brakes will bed in no time that's for sure!

The version 2.0 pads contain more metallic fibres compared to the older v1.0 Type-D. This means there's a bit more initial bite as well as resistance to heat.

Downside to all of this, there will be more noise LOL

Update on Sandown, the day got off to a troublesome start, was getting misfire between 5-6k rpm, didn't properly sort it till after lunch with a combination of new plugs, gap change and boost duty cycle changes. By the time everything was going good, the track temp was a bit high and greasy. There was a number of cars that went off and made contact with Sandowns walls. Ouch.

I managed to put in my best lap after lunch and ended up with a 1.23.9. Not a pb but happy with another lap in the 23's. So, onto the brakes. The stoptechs performed flawlessly. The bias felt perfect, no lock ups or any funny business. I basically drove like i would have with the stock brakes, it wasn't till towards the end of the day that i realised how much harder i could brake with these. It felt like i could just keep pushing the pedal harder and harder and the car would just pull up. I definitely need more time to adjust to this setup and change my technique and braking markers to take advantage of the extra stopping power.

The v2 type d brake pads felt great. I can't really say for sure what the difference felt like as im using a different calliper from before but what i can say is that they didn't give up at all when i strung out 5 hard laps back to back and stopped the car reliably time after time. They do feel like there is a little more bite but otherwise much the same with good progressive feel. They have quietened down now on the street but still not as quiet as the previous version. They look to have held up ok from a wear rate perspective as well. I would say they are a slight improvement on the already very good originals and hard to beat at their price point.

The Skytanic itself made it through the day unscathed, other than the misfire early on it was all smooth sailing. Managed to finish 9th quickest overall out of 97 cars. Not a bad effort for a daily driven boat. Highlight of the day was trying to keep up with checkbuzz's r33. Im close but not quite there. Seems like he was able to get out of the final turn on to the straight a lot better than me and that was where i was losing ground. Suppose I need to work on that corner.

I haven't bothered with a video yet, not sure that i will but i do have quite a few pics.

Great driving and photos Bill, good work!! Good to hear about the brake setup, too
Thanks JC[emoji106] im glad they didn't turn out to be an expensive mistake. I think i can further improve them with some better ducting and I'm probably going to cut out most of the rotor backing plate shields to try and keep the brake temps under control and the pads cooler and happier.

Minor update, decided its time to upgrade the diff. I've been waiting patiently for over a year for a 2nd hand 1.5 way to come up already installed in a housing. Unfortunately, no dice. I recently came across a 2 way installed in a non abs housing, the price was right so i pounced.

 

 

Unsure exactly what brand it is but most likely a kaaz or possibly ats. Seller advertised it as a 4.11 but when i got there i worked out its a 4.36. I used that as a bargaining chip but i was actually happy about it as thats what ive been looking for. I think that ratio will enable me to use 3rd gear out of the slower corners on the track and keep the engine on the boil.

 

I picked it up yesterday morning and installed it in the afternoon. Surprisingly it doesn't really chatter much at all. I thought it was stuffed but was pleasantly surprised when i nailed the throttle and painted a nice 11.

 

I did a couple of test launches and am very impressed with the difference, i still spin a fair bit through first and second but the speedo climbs with the rpm and the car just stays straight. Had a bit of fun in the wet early this morning too. Very predictable and easy to control now. Turn in does feel a little less sharp than before being a 2 way but no where near as bad as i was expecting.

 

Will hopefully be putting it trough its paces in a couple of weeks time at Phillip Island. Although my vlsd was still working pretty good, it did let me down at PI last time i was there, single pegging at 150+ kph wasn't good for lap times. Will be interesting to see how much of a difference a proper diff can make.

 

A couple of pics just so the post can be complete. Also for my own future reference, diff oil used was penrite mineral 85-140 with 30ml of limslip.

Did Phillip Island yesterday, the new diff passed with flying colours. No single spin anywhere and only broke traction a couple of times when getting carried away which turned into a bit of drifto. The 4.3 ratio was perfect for PI, didn't have to drop back to 2nd gear anywhere and was able to use 4th around turn 2 + 11 and was able to shift into 5th as soon as the car was straightened up off turn 12. 

I set a new PB of 1:53.46 which was a 1 second improvement. Racechrono showed a theoretical best of 1:52.5 unfortunately i wasnt able to nail a 100% mistake free lap. In the last session, i was able to tail and watch the lines of an MX5 driven by a mad man known as 'The Lightyear' , that bloke doesn't leave a millimetre of track unused and was getting side ways at 190+ around t1, i was able to sort of stay with him around the corners before mauling him down the straight. It definitely helped with line selection and i worked out why i couldn't get turn 6,7 and 8 right. 

Hopefully next time, 1:52's will be had with the new lines learnt. I haven't gone through video footage yet. I'll post something up when i get it done.

Not much has been happening, just been daily driving and enjoying this. For my records, i did a minor service a couple of weeks back, replaced engine oil, filter and coolant at what the odometer was showing as 85 000 km.

 

Sorted a couple of minor issues. One being a rear end knock which after months of chasing ended up being a subframe locking collar not seating well and slightly loose bracket bolt. Also figured out why the diff was overflowing from the breather, too much oil. Wasn't a good idea pre filling it before installing the diff. Also installed a see through inline filter on the breather tube, so i can monitor if the overflow stops or catch anything that does.

 

Other than that i've decided its time to get some half decent safety gear. I got myself an omp FIA approved nomex race suit. Replaced my expired sabelt harness with a monza by autotechnica harness. I compared the 2 side by side and am pretty happy with it. Quality wise its almost as good, the buckle on the sabelt is built a bit better though. The monza is FIA approved and was half the price of the big brands. Im just running it with a series 3 R33 GTR seat that i picked up a while back, eventually I'll upgrade to a proper fixed back seat with a slot to run the harness as a 6 point. Will also eventually get a Hans device and new helmet to suit as funds become available.

 

 

Also took out 9.5kg of dead weight with this.

 

Full river hc18 7.1kg

 

The one it replaced was 16.6kg.

 

When i bought the other battery, thats all i could get quickly, our stagea needs a new battery so i took the opportunity to get rid of the heavy bastard. Win win. The hc18 packs a bit of punch for the little thing it is and can be mounted laying on its side if you wanted too.

Next track day is coming up this Sunday. Its round 2 of the vic supersprint championship at Sandown. The weather at this stage isn't looking great but I'll keep my fingers crossed. Everyone's in the same boat anyway, especially if they're driving an R33.

 

Hopefully we get a dry run, im keen to see how the new diff and 4.3 ratio goes. Hoping to not have to use 2nd gear anywhere.

Good luck today mate!
Definitely needed luck, unfortunately didn't get any. There was parts of the day where it was 90% dry but whenever my group was up it seemed to start raining again, no dry sessions at all. Was a struggle to get under 1:50, was like driving a rudderless ship. Managed a 1:44.5, easily the worst track day I've ever done weather wise.

Rwd skylines with a bit of power and standing water at Sandown is not a good mix or fun. Other than non existent traction,car ran good and made it home in 1 piece. Overall feels like it was a big waste of time and money, now i need to book another Sandown day soon.

Such is track life.

Looking back at the results, everyone in my group struggled.

Ferarri 488 GTB (500k supercar) 1.41

Porsche 911TT Carrera S 1.39

VF HSV R8 1.40

Considering the above cars all have electronic trickery to help them out, the skyline still did ok with nothing, not even abs but yeah wasn't fun.

Quickest cars on the day

Porsche cup car on proper wets (driver has balls made of steel) 1.29

Ex HSV V8 Supercar  on wets 1.33.4

A couple of Renault Clio 172's ran 1.42 and 1.43 but that was on a 95% dry track.

In summary, got beaten by a bloody Clio 172 at Sandown. Demoralising.

    • I'm looking for some real world experiences/feed back from anyone who has personally ran a EFR7670 with a 1.05 exhaust housing or a .83 I'm leaning towards the .83 because its a street car used mostly for spirited driving in the canyons roads. I"m not looking for big numbers on paper. I want a responsive powerband that will be very linear to 8000 rpm. I dont mind if power remains somewhat flat but dont want power to drop off on top. The turbo I've purchased is a 1.05, although the mounting flange T3 vs T4 and internal vs external waste gates are different on both housings, I not concern about swapping parts or making fabrication mods to get what I want. Based on some of the research I've done with chat gpt, the 1.05 housing seems to be the way to go with slightly more lag and future proofing for more mods but recommends .83 for best response/street car setup. AI doesn't have the same emotions as real people driving a GTR so I think you guys will be able to give me better feed back 😀   
    • Surely somebody has one in VIC. Have you asked at any shops?  Is this the yearly inspection or did you get a canary?
    • This is where I share pain with you, @Duncan. The move to change so many cooling system pieces to plastic is a killer! Plastic end tanks and a few plastic hose flanges on my car's fail after so little time.  Curious about the need for a bigger rad, is that just for long sessions in the summer or because the car generally needs more cooling?
    • So, that is it! It is a pretty expensive process with the ATF costing 50-100 per 5 litres, and a mechanic will probably charge plenty because they don't want to do it. Still, considering how dirty my fluid was at 120,000klm I think it would be worth doing more like every 80,000 to keep the trans happy, they are very expensive to replace. The job is not that hard if you have the specialist tools so you can save a bit of money and do it yourself!
    • OK, onto filling. So I don't really have any pics, but will describe the process as best I can. The USDM workshop manual also covers it from TM-285 onwards. First, make sure the drain plug (17mm) is snug. Not too tight yet because it is coming off again. Note it does have a copper washer that you could replace or anneal (heat up with a blow torch) to seal nicely. Remove the fill plug, which has an inhex (I think it was 6mm but didn't check). Then, screw in the fill fitting, making sure it has a suitable o-ring (mine came without but I think it is meant to be supplied). It is important that you only screw it in hand tight. I didn't get a good pic of it, but the fill plug leads to a tube about 70mm long inside the transmission. This sets the factory level for fluid in the trans (above the join line for the pan!) and will take about 3l to fill. You then need to connect your fluid pump to the fitting via a hose, and pump in whatever amount of fluid you removed (maybe 3 litres, in my case 7 litres). If you put in more than 3l, it will spill out when you remove the fitting, so do quickly and with a drain pan underneath. Once you have pumped in the required amount of clean ATF, you start the engine and run it for 3 minutes to let the fluid circulate. Don't run it longer and if possible check the fluid temp is under 40oC (Ecutek shows Auto Trans Fluid temp now, or you could use an infrared temp gun on the bottom of the pan). The manual stresses the bit about fluid temperature because it expands when hot an might result in an underfil. So from here, the factory manual says to do the "spill and fill" again, and I did. That is, put an oil pan under the drain plug and undo it with a 17mm spanner, then watch your expensive fluid fall back out again, you should get about 3 litres.  Then, put the drain plug back in, pump 3 litres back in through the fill plug with the fitting and pump, disconnect the fill fitting and replace the fill plug, start the car and run for another 3 minutes (making sure the temp is still under 40oC). The manual then asks for a 3rd "spill and fill" just like above. I also did that and so had put 13l in by now.  This time they want you to keep the engine running and run the transmission through R and D (I hope the wheels are still off the ground!) for a while, and allow the trans temp to get to 40oC, then engine off. Finally, back under the car and undo the fill plug to let the overfill drain out; it will stop running when fluid is at the top of the levelling tube. According to the factory, that is job done! Post that, I reconnected the fill fitting and pumped in an extra 0.5l. AMS says 1.5l overfill is safe, but I started with less to see how it goes, I will add another 1.0 litres later if I'm still not happy with the hot shifts.
