Wanted to know if the HKS GTRS turbos work well on an RB26. They don't seem to be a commonly used twin setup. I was after some real world experience from people that have had them in use or been in a GTR with them attached. What are your thoughts?? How did or do they feel.

They are not common due to a mixture of misinformation and people not using them as part of a complete package. They are a 'bolt on' turbo but personally to get them to perform properly requires more work. Guys like XKLABA have the right idea... didn't Paul Diemar push 500kW with these back in the day? That was on a 2.6 with a lot of head work.

yes

but he also got spanked by a 2.6 -5 powered circuit car on the strip

Put them in the bin. They suck.

Direct back to back between -5's and RS's on a well sorted 2.8.

Gav actually had a massive drag intercooler with the RS's, and changed for a smaller one with the -5s. Not sure how much difference that makes then he went E85 at around that time too.

The last I heard he is changing up again from his gtx's, the dude is mad.

Going from 63's to 67's.

Having RS's and (I admit) it wasn't the optimal setup, they were woeful. However, I haven't come across someone that went from RS's back to the "lesser" -5's or 2530's and wasn't happier with them, regardless of engine size!

They're mismatched.

Cubes hides the shitness of these things! You DO NOT WANT these on a 2.6. 2.8 they still suck, 3.0 just hides the shitness of them.

No need to consider Jurassic park turbos in today's age.

They sucked on a 3.15lt too.

Shuffled at 2000 RPM making a MAF sensor tune impossible. Despite the averaging the comparator inputs on the ECU working the data from both MAF sensors, getting a consistent 14.7:1 at light load cruise just could not be done. The load cell would move around the map when engine speed and vacuum was not actually changing.

I didn't have the surge issues that the smaller motors have, but the shuffling would happen all the way till the wastegates were open (and probably a little after that too). Full boost was at 4500.

If your trying to hide what your have under the bonnet, and don't mind having a 6000-9000 rpm power band and no low end drivability then they are great!

If your driving the engine under load from below wastegate regulated boost, they will be terrible in comparison to the -5's or anything else.

Paul Diemer's setup used SR20 GT-RS's 0.86 housings, and I believe he switched to the HKS balanced low mount manifolds too, which to a degree will have eliminated shuffle by balancing back pressure to the turbine, reducing the miss-match issue... at the expensive of even more lag. You can bet that Paul was reving the hell out of his 2.6.

Gtx2863s have more air flow rate than the gtrs turbos

The 71.1 mm RS wheel is rated at 44 lb/min each.

The 63 mm GTX wheel is rated at pretty much the same.

Gtx wheel is lighter, still has to get out of that peanut, small ass end. Cold side too big, hot side too small.

Go back through the gtx thread and Simon Haughton who did this exact combo regretted it because of heat issues.

A shiney billet wheel on the cold side doesn't fix the nugget rear ass end.

Can get in, can't get out, why bring more air in. It's farken stupid.

Trying to empty a bath with the plug pulled...but have a fire hose filling it up!

    • Was there ever a model of the Stagea m35 that didnt have a badge on the grill? I thought I saw that somewhere, some aero edition or something? I cant find it again? davemoto
    • Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.
    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
