just wondering which transmissions are a good swap option?

i have been hearing about using the trans from a 350/370z as well as the 5 speed swap and the getrag swap.

all im looking for is to change from my auto trans to a manual.

what do you guys have for options if they are not listed here?

those Series 2 350Z boxes, aka CD009 will happily hold 1000hp (or 700hp AU numbers, 30% yanky inflation).

Chris Forsberg's twin turbo 370Z uses the stock box (essentially a CD009).. makes silly power and gets drifted off it's tits.

Cheaper than the likes of OS Giken, PPG, PAR, etc...

The cost of those mentioned gearsets will be a brand new box delivered to your doorstep.

There are a few kits to slap them to SRs however nothing noted down for RBs

The problem with the 5 speed swap is the transmission is getting hard to get a hold of in and around Canada because all the 240's the s14/15 and Silvia guys are converting their cars to the 5 speeds from the r cars because it's a better trans

And I would prefer something in a 6 speed setup as I do lots of highway driving

If it were me looking for highway gearing I'd be putting some 3.7 gears in the diff. Would work well with the 5 speed.

The other thing people are doing to get 5 speeds is getting the (apparently) same gearbox from D22 Navaras and swapping the bellhousing half of their old/worn out RB25 box.

Putting VQ gearboxes behind RBs has been thought through, but like Johnny above, I'm not aware of too many that have been done.

there's this:

but no one I know has used it b4.. in theory seems easy enough, however theory usually always translate to real-world.

You are going to have to change diff ratios as well if you want to match or drop the revs you are doing now on the highway. The auto box has a 0.694 4th gear ratio, the 350/370z has a 0.794 6th gear ratio and the RB25det has a 0.752 5th gear ratio.

Cheapest option (if you don't want a second hand gearbox) is buy a brand new 5 speed and change the diff ratios.

Another option is a Tremec T56 and adaptor plate

Missed the never part lol

Is there 14mm of meat that can be safely taken off the bellhousing without trashing the strength of it?

Just found this

Alpha omega wouldn't machine more than 9mm off the bellhousing.

Toyota have a 6 speed Getrag - maybe someone in the States makes an adapter plate - and get an R34 GTR diff (3.545:1)

Just had a look on TradeMe and used RB25 boxes are $2k - $2500!

Have you checked to see if you can buy them brand new from Japan?

There are a couple of threads on this site with instructions and a parts list for the manual conversion - the centre console may be hard to come by as well.

the toyota 6 speed getrag is just to expensive for just a swap as its around $8000us. for the build i plan on doing down the road it will be perfect,

and by the time i import the used 5 speed box it will be around the 4-5k, im looking for something i can use without costing crazy money until i do my build.

    • A 1.5 way is a 2 way. It is just a 2 way with a less aggressive ramp on overrun.
    • The ABS and/or TCS being missing/broken will not cause the engine to misbehave. It just casues CEL to come on and annoy you. The CEL is useless if it is always on, so you have to do the things you have to do to get rid of it, so it can be useful. Being a Stag ECU, then yes, it will not expect TCS to be present. But it will expect ABS to be present and working. You will need to either make the ABS CU talk to the ECU (don't ask me what that will take on an NA R34), and make sure the hardware is working....or, you just need to blank it out in Nistune. Do not persist with the stock ECU. You will just have problems. Gte it Nistuned. Start from there. DO YOU HAVE A BOOST SENSOR? The ECU's boost sensor that it. It is connected to the loom at the rear of the coil cover. Usually rides on the firewall on an R34, but is usually bolted down to a bracket along with all the other crap at the back of the coil cover when a Neo is dropped into another car. If you do not have it, the ECU will shit the bed. So, do you have one?
    • So sadly the fuel pump etc was not it. The pump and filter is new and it is still cutting around 4000 rpm. A read something about ABS/TCS (engine is from stagea and ECU too so no TCS) and i dont know for 100% that my car has ABS. It has ABS "cube" in engine bay but i dont think it works(or at least from my braking experience). Can be something like that?  I will be driving the car next week to Nistune tuner to properly see what is wrong...
    • the Tomei LSD fluid with lsd kit. frustrated that it was shaking the car to crap and affecting everything else negatively, I pulled the diff last night, and removed the lsd carrier, could not find anything wrong, however it seem to be 100 locked up acceleration, and deacceleration, wondering if they sent me a 2 way not a 1.5??  either way I installed the stock open carrier back in place. test drove everything smooth as butter again. no shake, shutter, random, what felt like clutch slip and grab or drive shaft play, etc. something differently wrong in side the lsd. I might bother taking it apart (if possible) to figure out what's going on inside this carrier, as bought too long ago to return.  only draw back is its back to a one wheel wonder.
