Just got r33 gtst allready have an oil leak. Need help/advice

Hi everybody i come here with my hat in my hands needing some advice. A few days ago i purchased a r33 gtst from the owner of a performance shop in Sydney its got the following

  • New engine with unknown k's
  • pod, exhaust, screamer pipe
  • stock intercooler stock ecu stock turbo @ 11psi
  • told it dyno'd 190kw

It went hard on a test drive but since picking it up its started idling rough and today after taking it for a long drive i noticed a puddle of oil underneath, popped the bonnet and seen its pissed half(according to the dipstick) its oil out through the oil line to the turbo?  So i got back onto the bloke and he told me to top it up with 20/50 and bring it back around.... Now i fix computers for a living but 20/50 in a RB doesn't sound right.

Any input/advice on what to do or who to take it to is really appreciated.download9fdd08fb_storage_2femulated_2f0_2fDCIM_2fCamera_2fIMG_20170830_145136.thumb.png.49aab834613c6c791109d2a6fa235310.png

.

Guys use 10-40, 15-50, I personally use 10-60. Just top it up with some 20-50 if that's what he was using and take it back to him to fix the leak since he has offered too. You can change oil to what you like later on.

Looks like that banjo bolt on the oil line is loose, stripped or missing crush washers.

Sorry I'm not familiar with Adelaide. Try tightening that bolt, if it still leaks, take it back to the bloke who sold it to you to fix. Someone else should be able to point you toward a decent mechanic. Cheers and good luck.

I went to tighten it this morning but it wasn't very loose. Im off to buy the washers now. To get at the bolt i moved the inlet pipe and when i disconnected it i noticed some oil in there.. im guess this probably isn't good. Id still really like to get a professional to check it over once im done so im open to suggestions

replace crush washers (can be bought at repco/super cheap auto <$5 ) clean it up and monitor

if it still leaks grab a new line, braided is probably easiest and you'll be sorted.

Do I need 2? Top and bottom or just top? I've taken my banjo bolt out and I've only got one

I love it when problems become obvious like that.

in regards to the oil in the intake, could be a turbo seal, HOWEVER, your current leak suggest the turbo has come off at some point in the near past, so the previous owner could have replaced a shagged turbo with another one. So best case is the oil is from before and wasn't cleaned up. OR time for a new turbo/hi-flow/etc...

Yeah, a high flow was on the cards... Not the same week I bought it though. Feel pretty cheated to be honest. If I go high flow Il need to get a fmic too right? This is getting expensive fast.

You bought an r33, expensive fast is the norm :P

(Only slightly exaggerating)

Is that a fibre washer in the "before" picture?

Yep, im thinking there was a bottom one too but it melted.

In hindsight my plans to use this as a cheap weekend cruiser were probably a bit optimistic :7_sweat_smile: A project has never killed anybody though and its a good opportunity to learn. There's a grinding sound that comes and goes from the turbo which i'm guessing is the blades hitting the housing so the plans are..

  1. Replace the turbo with something bolt on, thinking the G2 or G3 from hypergear
  2. Replace rusted out radiator with an aluminum one
  3. Replace the fully hektic blast pipes with something a bit more sensible
  4. Treat the nasty rust in the boot
  5. Finally, Enjoy the F***ing thing (in my dreams)

Then if required fuel pumps, injectors & ecu and etc etc but i don't have the first clue about stuff like that and gonna have to do WAY more reading. Il be sure to bug everybody with all the questions i have :9_innocent:

It'll happen - I'm 10 years into my 33 and re-discovering the joy.

GCG make a bloody good high flow; they take your turbo, clean it up brand spankers and fix it all up with new turbines etc - might be worth looking into. Radiator - mishimoto (450 usually, saw it for 360 the other day on those eBay 20% off things).

Obviously you won't be using the "performance shop" that sold you the car. Can't suggest a shop in Adelaide but would say Hypergear will give you better bang for buck than GCG.

    • @Murray_Calavera iam just considering options 🙂 of course it is very expensive so that why i ask here 🙂  @joshuaho96 I looked at that GCG hybrid(i remember looking at it few weeks before) So this is "that" hybrid where i send them my turbo and they upgrade the inside to Garrett stuff and then they send it back. It cost around 1200-1300 USD which is FAR cheaper than the HKS and it is what iam looking for(i just do not have experience like this...to send something off to "upgrade" ) @tylink720 that is like 150 USD turbo no? 😄 I dont think i have the "ease on my mind" with this kind of turbo. I just put over 7000k USD to "LINK" up my engine...dont want to blow it up with cheap turbo 😄     EDIT: https://www.cj-motor.com/gcg-turbo-charger-for-nissan-rb20det-rb25det-high?srsltid=AfmBOooVeOZ6CZ6r1AIv5m-KPaa6BvudIPJTY8LW78khkd-gQlsaCht9 I looked at this and it seems ok? It is that CGC hybrid and it costs around 1250 USD (with back shipping). Do any of you have experience with this hybrid on NEO turbo? I quickly look thru the forum/web and it seems very good.

    • It's funny, as Ive seen plenty of people use them in cheap builds on YT. And they actually go okay, even though a lot of other maxspeedingrods stuff is terrible. Those turbos seem reliable enough, the only part being, a good quality turbo that is "identical" to it, will out perform it day in and day out. In both a lower boost threshold, and the ability to flow more air at the same boost pressure. As a cheap cheap replacement, not a terrible choice. For cheap and shouldn't blow in a day, not terrible (like other eBay/Temu turbos) for low cost and still decent performance, that's where the question comes in to play from the results I've seen. I'd actually find it hilarious to buy one, and strap it to a paddock basher or some other cheap as POS originally NA car, and send it to the moon!
