Hey all,

I'm currently underway with a complete nut and bolt re-build of my R32.

The car is now fully stripped. 30 years of driving and weather meant that almost every bolt under the car was as good as welded on and required/will benefit from replacement. Breaker bar ftw.

I've downloaded the workshop manual, which is great in terms of displaying every part (including every nut and bolt and their nm specs. Handy.) but it doesn't show their dimensions (thread gauge, length, socket size etc).

Do we know if there's any resource which lists this information? Similar to the workshop manual, I'd ideally like to be able to look at a schematic, note all the bolts I'll need, then buy them.

Please don't assume I was diligent enough to keep each nut and bolt and list their location, so I could refer back to them. They're all in the bin and let's just put that down to my stupidity and impatience. I have, thankfully, properly photographed, listed and numbered all of the parts, but the bolts escaped my attention.

Off the back of that, does anyone have any sources they can recommend for purchasing very high quality nuts and bolts (e.g. Wurth etc).

As always, thanks in advance for your advice.

Andrew.

You best resource is the part numbers etc which you can then match up to what you have.

Thanks! How would I then match up the numbers? i.e. is there another online resource which then gives the info on the specs, or would I need to go to Nissan with the numbers?

Not really, or atleasst not that I know of.  Start here:

https://www.amayama.com/en/genuine-catalogs/epc/nissan-japan/skyline/BNR32?ref=ae

So you may want bits for the door, for example.

This lot are useful too.

The trick, such as it is, is to use the suffix 05U00 where appropriate.  Also the nengun rendition of fast is better resolution.

Sorry to be negative....but you are a bit stuffed.

The only information on bolt length is in some specific cases in the workshop manual where it matters, eg oil pump bolts.

There is also some information on generic torque specs at the front of the manual for bolt sizes, but the individual diagrams show the actual torque for each application.

In nissan bolts of that age:

m6 - 10mm head

m8 - 12mm head

m10 - 17mm head

m12 - 19mm head

not much under m6 or above  m12 but they are generally 8mm or 21mm.

As for bolt pitch, they are almost always standard (coarse), but the gearbox cross member ones are fine pitch. Coarse vs fine is a standard for metric bolts that varies depending on bolt size (eg m8)

As for length, no such doco unless there is something specific in the service manual. Also there are some bolts like the rear shock lower arm or rear control arm upper arm inner bolts that are specific (shock bolts have a conical end to assist insertion, and upper control arm inner bolts have camber adjustment).

I know you can't undo it, but.....KEEP YOUR BOLTS NEXT TIME!

Going to be the first time that anyone has bought a wreck just to get all the fasteners!

lol I had to double check my post because I thought about suggesting that, then didn't. But with 32 gtr prices these days maybe a gts4 half cut would be a cheap way to fix the problem.

Thanks for all the input, guys.

I have access to other 32’s, so I can get the specs from there. I’ve kept everything under the car from the front cradle back, so that’ll be fine and everything engine related will be new anyway, so that won’t matter.

I’ll make a list of all the relevant dimensions and their locations, then post the list here for others in the future. There will only be more people wanting to do complete nut and bolt resto’s moving forwards.

It is well worth getting hold of a copy of FAST so that way you have a full reference for the car. Once part codes have been converted into part numbers you can search for them on Nengun, Amayama, Kudos, Patsouq etc as @djr81 has mentioned above. I have had the most success on Amayama lately.

If your old bolts are still serviceable  - just surface rust etc  - and except for critical once use only applications - I'd consider sending them off to a bright zinc finish plater like A+G Platers in Belmore?? [been a while since I used them] Sydney.  Be much cheaper and easier.....plus if you combine that with buying some new ones then you will have a great supply to choose from for all your applications.

Used to be able to get a bucket of bolts done for around $100 from memory.

Big fan of zinc plating and I'll be doing it on a few parts (hood catch assembly etc) but most of the bolts aren't in perfect condition and my OCD and the level of build quality I'm aiming for won't let me do it *sigh*

Had a good look through the amayama and nengun links today and they'll give me exactly what I need. Everything is still fresh in my memory from the strip down, so I can just look at the exploded diagrams and I know which bolts I need (erm, all of them).

Thanks again everyone!

Yeah, I've done it for other builds where standard bolts and bolts with standard head markings were no longer available, but preparation is the key.  Hours on the wire wheel cleaning the threads up, on the TIG welding up the corners, and on the Dremel sanding the flats etc before getting them plated.  But it was worth it for that fresh/new standard look.

    • It was a great, but typical track day, and some VB was ingested at the night time debrief 🤪
    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.

    • Unsolicited advice? Keep the engine as close to stock as you can. Nothing wrong with adding some boost and making a little more power, but given where you are, you really don't want to try to make it into a monster. I can't imagine the roads are up to it, and the lack of locla support when it grenades will be a ball ache. FWIW, If there is a dyno around that you can access, then brand new injectors are a good idea, which will lead you to (at least) putting a Nistune in it, which will allow you to put an R35 AFM on it, all of which will make it possible to make it much much nicer to drive and live with.
