New Brands vs Legacy Brands Coilover Opinions

I'm looking to replace some old Tein and Apexi coilovers that were on my GTR. I was planning on getting either Nitron R3 or Ohlins R/T. Mostly Street use w/ some club sprints.

With all the new brand out these days what are some of the highly regarded ones? Would you choose a newer brand over the JDM/legacy brands?

Well, like tyres, when it comes to suspension (shocks in particular), a good brand will have a range of options at different price points, so there's no point talking about a brand overall.

Noting you are not in Aus so availability might be different, I would go:

cheap - BC racing

medium - Bilstein B6 with adjustable circlip grooves (this is what I run on my race/rally car)

serious - MCA Gold

And yes, none of them are japanese....for Australian roads the japanese spring (and therefore shock) rates are almost always too high to be comfortable. There were some local companies modifying Teins with good outcomes but I don't think they are available any more

^^Ditto. At least for Australia. They'd still be reasonably priced, shipped across the world, when viewed from an "I own US$ and want to buy something priced in AU$" perspective.

There are obviously other brands in the northern hemishpere that would be equivalent to what our good locals can do. KW in Europe, frigzample.

I would be willing to bet you could count the number of people in Australia who have Nitron could be counted on one hand. Ditto Ohlins, except for the motorbike and motorsport world. Almost none on street cars would be my bet.

I am on the MCA bandwagon. 
I have purples in the street car- 2015 Spec X-R, Reds in one track car and Golds in the other.

Their Purple or Performance coilover is best for street cars that see the odd track day. Everything above that is Track only.
The way they ride and take bumps in the road is amazing, have done over 3200km in one road trip without a complaint. Rides nicer than my 2019 370z

I found out about MCA last night. I didnt realized how long theyve been around.

After looking I think Im leaning towards Shockworks. Just recently found more info about the company. I like the owners model of building to specific setups as a norm. plus theyre a smaller business which I tend to support when I can.

I find myself buying more/more parts from Australian companies. Japan just aint doing it these days. You Aussies have been diligent with motorsports advancements.

Which ones are their purple ones? Pro Comfort? This is the one thing that bugs me about MCA. Whenever people talk about them I find it difficult to translate different model names to their current lineup. Not sure if they keep changing it or if I'm just dense.

According to the paperwork mine are MCA Street Essentials. I presume that's Pro Comfort these days but don't know for sure.

Purple in 2015 were custom built at 3 levels comfort, race and drift. So pro sport now

Essentially blues with red valving. 

Yeah pro comfort be street essentials. If needing a change talk with them as can revalve to suit changes. They changed marketing a lot, Josh seems to be marketing more broadly now and more to the average consumer.

Makes sense, thanks! I wish them all the best because the coilovers are great. Super happy with the Pro Comforts on the wagon. Forgiving enough to transport the aging in-laws but still feel good in the twisties. At least at the level that I'm driving. YMMV.

Hah, OP is driving a GTR after all. I doubt it'll have the (grand)parentals squeezed in the back to drive out for lunch :D

      What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.

      Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.

      looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
