Hi, can anyone here clarify the rules about having an after market gear knob? I heard that for it to be legal, there must be a H Pattern on the Gear Knob.

But what if I have a H Pattern Sticker nearby? Will this count?

I read somewhere that it is ok in NSW but how about over here in VIC? Anyone knows?

I've had my car RWCd several times, and it's fitted with an aftermarket gear knob that doesn't have the pattern etched on it. I've never had comment from the RWC guys that it's a problem.

Frankly, anyone who needs the gear pattern etched onto the gear knob to know where the gears are doesn't deserve to be driving, period, let alone driving a manual.

I believe that a few people here have been defected for not having the shift pattern on the knob. I dont know about having the sticker near it though.

Also, as many people know, what a cop defects you for and what the RWC guys say are totally different.

Does anyone sell these stickers? Thats just a stupid law.. as if you wouldn't know the direction of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and the rest of them

Its based on the idea that if there is a life threatening emergency and someone needs to use your vehicle, they need to know which gears are where. The reverse gear is not always in the same place

lol well thats definately the bush mechanics way to do it :)

maybe even just texter it on ya dash haha

just go to a printing joint and get one made... maybe i could get my uncle and aunty to make a heap up.

pen, paper, sticky tape...Problem goes away.

this is a good cheap fix

one of the excuses i recieved a defect was because my gearknob had no H pattern.

to fix it i just got someone to cut out a vinyl sticker with what i needed and its all done :)

stuck it just next to the ashtray

yeah, my bro's golf you have to push the gear knob DOWN, and then push it up to left, LEFT of where 1st gear is... something like that wouldn't be too easier to figure out if there was no pattern.

The other day i had to drive a Barina (don't ask), and the stupid thing had it so you had to pull up on the friggin gear boot to put in reverse! Now there was no pattern for *that* on the gearknob! Took me friggin ages to work it out.. stupid as.. damn girl cars are crap..

yeah, euro cars have the reverse on the left. it's a pain in the ass. It's also wierd, with indicators on wrong side, coz when you come to a corner, you use left hand for indicators, then have to shift down with same hand, just annoying.

they are definantly defectable, a friend has a nismo sticker nearby, im not sure where u get them, but they r definantly avaliable

i love the M3 gear knob which illuminates the H pattern at night time... that's cool :D

but yeah, don't go blowing stupid amounts of money on "Nismo" patterns, just gank the logo from somewhere, print the f*cker out with an H pattern, or just do the whole thing with pen and paper.... don't think it's worth spending lots of $ on...

    • Hello!  i just finished manual swaping my r34 skyline with a r33 rb20de box(RB71C)box  When the car is running it squeaks crazy loud and it was smoking from the gearbox area. The gearbox is fine it was tested. The clutch slave cylinder seems like it doesn't fully releases the clutch. I want to ask if this noise is from the throw out bearing or could it be the clutch assembly or disk att.xFliq87Gzw6kImKBVqDebXkj0fBqymk0JaYeP3_3SlM.mp4
    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!

    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
