JUST CARS cover all legal mods, if its legal u can have it , ring up and ask takes 2seconds

Im pretty sure that carbon bonnets are legal on cars that are older than a certain date.... I think theyre legal on R32s but not on r33s? So just cars wont cover them if there illegal.

I went through it with my 32 GTR with firstly a carbon skinned replica, then a genuine full carbon bonnet, and neither was deemed legal. (As per a liscensed mod plater anyway).

No insurance company I've dealt with wants to know about it. If any of them did cover it, I'd be very interested to see a claim process if a significant or fatal injury occured due to the bonnet.

If you look at a standard bonnet near the hinges, there is a "hook and catch" to arrest the bonnet in a frontal impact. No doubt to try and stop the rear edge going through the windscreen and reaching the occupants.

Some things ive heard/read...

In a front on accident, it will shear the A-pillar and injure driver passenger. Cant see this happening. The angle of the A-pillar, and the fact that the bonnet bolts/pickups would have to shear leads me to think that there is no way the bonnet will slice thru the A-pillar and glass and injure driver. The pick up shear and bonent go flyign yes...but?!?!?

The thing will shatter and splinter. To me the carbon bonnet is safer to pedestrians . Carbon fibre would not splinter/shatter if a passenger was struck. A steel / alloy bonnet would crumble leaving dags of metal ready to cut ppl, whereas a carbon bonnet would absorb the impact and ppl would bounce off it like a trampoline.

Now this is dependant on the quality of the carbon fibre or course, but i cant see what all the hoo haa is about...and again not saying im right, but i have yet to hear a reason that makes sense.

Anyway, no point arguing with insurance/rta/police etc etc:(

i use to make carbon fibre boats and masts. The resistance of carbon fibre can be applyed in many ways due to omnidirectional strands or directional weave the weave method is used for show on car bonnets and shoud be backed up by omnidirectional strands of carbon fibre no bonnet i have seen so far has this system applyed to it. yes it could bounce a pedestrian but if it's not backed up properly it would shatter and the last thing a pedistrian needs is to be picking a zillion shards out of them selfs. all that said i still think carbon is the go and i could not for see a driver being injured from one.

:D and they'll magically bounce to their feet and they'll be fine :D

anyhow, like I said Can somebody cite an instance where a carbon fibre bonnet has caused a dangerous result, other than the accident itself? - doesn't seem like too many examples forthcoming are there...

yeah that was me...

my bonnet is legal due to the fact it is not a full carbon bonnet it is a skin bonnet. just like fibre glass which is legal.

police told me that it might be legal. but to get it checked out. so i did and there is no law to say that a carbon skinned bonnet is ilegal. so i told just car and they just bumped my bill up about $50 so i cant complain...

that paint, cost a shit load to pathcup

i got a mate who had wrx and that sorta paint job and he got part of his car scratch and they are still trying to match the paint exactly for the last god knows how many months..

It DOESN'T act like a trampoline.

Most likely you'll hit the bonnet, it'll fold a little and the top of the RB will most likely cause you some severe internal injury.

I've seen a carbon bonnet in an accident and it's cracks and folds back. It's no more dangerous than a steel bonnet.

So am i right in saying that carbon boonets are manufactured just like fibreglass bonnets, i mat and resin...am i missing something or isnt the whole point of carbon fibre the weigh:strength advantages from a materials and construction aspect. Do you still get all the strenght properties if things arent vacuum formed and baked etc etc?

No roy, the point of carbon fibre is not wieght and strength, it is rice.

99% of the CF bonnets sold in aus are fibreglass with a single cf layer on top for looks.

the other 1% full cf bonnets are $4k plus.

    • I know people cry at the price of the Getrag 12-14k for a conversion now, but it really is a nice mid point.
