I love seeing other poeple jumpin left and right all over the place, punchung it off and on again.

Then i cruise along at about 40 and pass em just cause i know which lane will be better.

:rofl: Our family car used to be a 47kW auto corolla. Lane choice was all i had... but as you said, it works!

I too cruise around at 50km/h in 5th. Put the foot down a little boost comes up quick and accelerates away easily.

Since the new motor I also find my self pulling out of corners/round abouts in third and fourth from as low as 1000rpm.

I've always dropped it in fifth when cruising at a steady speed.

If I need to accelerate, drop it back a cog.

Maybe this is why I used to get 470km's to a tank of juice (50l) with the rb30det and recently managed 520km's from the rb30det? :rofl:

lucky you i get about 200ks to 50l

170km/hr or so when you run out of 4th :rofl:

in the old r33 manual i don't think i ever really used it too much, except when on the freeways at 100km/hr (even then thats the top of 3rd if you are really hammering it).. but that was melbourne/crapville. I used to see 5th as the "sleep gear" - leave it and you tended to nod off .. :headspin:

i can't believe so many of you drive in 5th at only 50 or 60kmh!! It just feels wrong!

i usually change at about 3000rpm and only use 5th when I get to 90-100kmh!

if i had to sit in an 80 zone for a while i'd probably whack it in 5th, but if that dropped to a 70 zone I'd have it back in 4th...

Have a look at dyno read outs it shows the torque curve starting about 2200 on mine anything below that is hurting you motor. Read execive wear as oil is not up to it and if you listen you'll hear your motor groaning and its saying put me lower gear please.

If you are cruising you have very very minimal load on the motor.

With minimal load it doesn't hurt the motor to cruise around at low rev's.

My peak torque is at 2000rpm. 100rwkw which is around 150kw at the flywheel, using the formula Power = Torque x RPM / 5252 that would equate to some where around 740nM of torque. :rofl:

Sounds almost unrealistic.

I don't get it, I always cruise around in 5th so long as the car feels like it has enough "go".. ie down hills or higher speeds.

Why is it bad under 1000rpm?

are you serious? under 1000rpm the engine is either about to stall or blow, putting that sort of strain on the engine is just lazy - change up a gear.

Its actually something you can pick by ear. if the car is loading up it vibrates and sounds like shit bascailly. I found my rb20 if ther are no hills, and im not going to accelerate at all 70km/h was ok, but realistically 80km/h without putting excess load on the car

It's all good to say something but without anything to back it up it means sh#t to me. I can see this thread as the type of thread which attracts lots of comments from kids who don’t really know what they’re talking about so that’s why I ask somebody to mechanically explain it so I can take the explanation literally & put those actions into place if I feel I need to.

Have u even ridden a mountain/racer bike up a hill very slowly in the highest gear or gone from stationary in the highest gear??? If you have u will know it takes alot more effort/force/energy to do so than if u had it in a lower gear.

Same goes for an engine being loaded at a slow revolution in 5th gear where it is getting an unnecessary load applied to it

Ok so how is this 'load' physically hurting the engine... name parts exactly...

Trying to ride a mountain bike up a hill in a higher gear doesn’t actually physically damage me, I'm simply not able to do the same thing 'pedal legs' as fast as if in a lower gear, no damage, just reduced speed / power / torque.

So now we come back to an engine, how is an engine different at lower speed as it is at higher RPMs. *pistons, crankshaft, cams, all move the same still, just different speed depending on RPMs*. Each piston ignites creating x amount of torque at the given RPM. Now once the RPM is low enough & cannot create enough torque to move the car in the higher gear how is this actually damaging the engine. Isn’t the engine really just doing the same thing as it is at idle RPM, the internals are still all moving the same BUT the only difference at that same low RPM a lot more Air & Fuel is being injected to try & get the car to accelerate at that low RPM.

This is my understanding of an engine & trying to get some explanation why low RPM in high gear is actually physically damaging / harmful to your engine, I heard someone say something about Oil before? Is oil the final factor? But at the moment with my limited understanding of engines I cannot see why an open full throttle at low RPMs is bad. Please correct / enlighten me.

dude why the hell would u even change at 2500 rpm's thats just silly

skylines can handel 5000 or 5500 quite ok

are yous all stingy with your petrol or did your pops teach yous all to drive

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year. 
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
