It's not a boost gauge, it's a manifold pressure gauge. It shows both positive (boost) and negative (vacuum) situations.

I remember watching the mighty BU5TER on the rollers at Powercruise at ECR and they turned to mush and sprayed everyone with melted rubber. It was spectacular but not great for big numbers.
I bedded my Jim Berry clutch in during the first burnout of a race meeting at WSID. It lasted more than two years of hard core abuse and racing and is still going strong (for the last could of years at least) in a drift car and it HADN'T been rebuilt.
