Hey,

I'm sick off using the miniature car jack, that comes with the car, and safety stands, to get the car up to work on. Also the car can only be raised a limited height due to the jack.

I'm gonna go check out supercheap/repco in the weekend to see what I can get. I'm thinking of either car ramps or the hydraulic jacks (I think i saw one for $30ish), depending on the price.

What have you guys bought, and where from, and how much did it set you back?

Andy

p.s Optimal would be the use of hydraulic jack with safety stands, if the price is right.

Ramps are always an issue with modified skylines due to the height on the front bar...

I always use a hydraulic jack and then stands... This is the safest method...

Dont ever get under the car just on the jack tho... Always put stands in place.. Ive seen what happens when cars fall on people first hand... Its not pretty...

The larger $100 jacks will give you a lot more levereage than the cheap little ones. I've got a $30 jack from supercheap once and its a piece of shit..lol

Stands are like $30.. no biggie there.

For my car you need both  baby one to lift it enough to fit the big one under.

And jack stands, just make sure they have the ticks, and correct load ratings. They should, but for safty just check.

Predator - about ur $30 jack that u bought - can u elaborate on piece of shit? What was actually wrong with them?

Im not looking for anything fancy - as long as it pops the car up so I can get the stands under it Im happy.

Supercheap have got one in their latest catalogue for $55 bucks.

well, i reckon a pit is even safer

ive just been looking to buy a house and found a house with a double garage, with a pit

i so wanted to buy it, but wifey wouldnt have a bar of it

i used to have access to a pit but that was before my interest in cars.

pity

when i have to put the car up for long periods i use axle stands.

i gave some thought a long time ago to building some specialised ramps for my car but the reality is theyd have to be so long and gradual that it was hardly worth it.

If you are talking about ramps, can I assume that you are just talking about oil changes and the like ?

If so, you can use standard car ramps on your very low Skyline. This may be just for the other guys if this is not your intention.

What you do is turn your steering full lock, place one ramp only on the side that has the wheel protruding and drive sideways up this ramp.

I have been doing this for a couple of years now for oil changes.

Apologies if this is a hijack or a well known thing but.... hope it helps someone out.

Enjoy!

I love my hoist at the workshop! it makes life easy.

I always do work on my car at the workshop. in my next house I want a big garage with a hoist in it.

If anyone gets stuck (needing help to get under) feel free to pop in.

Ok from now on I'm doing all my work at your place. lol

I bought an Omega quicklift jack that came with two stands for the wonderful price of $205 from Repco.

Goodluck replicating that price though.

I got an $80 trolley jack from Supercheap and damn it works well, I just wheel it under and jack up. Makes it alot safer then jacking up with the standard jack and also it has a wider base so it is much more stable, makes it easier to jack up on grass if need be. I got the jack and 2 axel stands for $120 and it was worth it.

those with trolley jacks what part of the car do you use?? my sideskirts are too wide so i cant use it on the side (behind the front wheel arch) without using the standard jack to raise the height a few cm. The only way i found that works is to use the trolley jack square on in the middle of the car and jack it up using the lower radiator support, not sure if that point is designed to hold the whole weight of the front of the car tho..

trolley jack for me 1500kg ish rating from repco think it was like 100something but on sale was like 70 so yeah enough to lift a 32 but have a lil bit of trouble getting it under - and will deff have more trouble once it gets the suspension sorted .. i place the trolley jack right in the middle axels -

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways.
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.
    • Damn that was hilarious, and a bit embarrassing for skylines in general 😂 vintage car life ey. That R33 really stomped. Pretty entertaining stuff
    • Hi, I have a r32 gtr transmission. Does any of you guys have an idea how much power it will hold with the billet center plate and stock gearset? At what power level and use did yours brake with or without billet plate? Thanks, Oystein Lovik
    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
