Hi guys,

I'll be re-locating to Melbourne within a matter of 3-4 weeks now, just spent the last weekend down there getting everything with work and accomodation sorted. Definately seems like a decent place to spend some time, a bit more polished than Sydney....

Without having spent much time down here (the only time has been work focused, have been to the casino though!) what are the must do's down here?

What to see / visit / keep busy with ?

Where are the best bars / clubs / places to avoid ?

I hear there are alot of track days, will certainly keep tabs on them to come out and take a look (Won't be bringing the GTR down unfortunately!)

PS - How does South Melbourne rate as a suburb? I've sorted some accomodation out for at least a while down there....

Cheers

Richard :)

congratz dude

South Melbourne is a very good area to live in, i have 2 mates living there one in a pent house directly facing the city, looks stunning at night when all the lights r on and the MCG sticking out like dogs balls to the right if his apartment

being so close to the city u wont have a problem finding a decent club/bar. Try heading over to Docklands aswell, its kind of Melbourne's secret cause its new, so many places to eat over there.

Then ofcourse u have Chapel st a few k's down the rd outbound

In which suburb r u planning to settle down in after sth melbz?

Sth melbourne is a nice suburb in my opinion. You'll have fun there. Your a stones through from the casino and Sth Bank. And a short trip tram trip to St Kilda. You'll have to learn how to do hook tunrs too :)

I'm a St Kilda Local, so my fav bars are there. Places like, The Espy, Dalton Bar, Bigmouth, The Local, even the Vineyard. Also big Fan of a Mother's Milk bar on Chapel St, and the Windsor Castle pub (has the best beer garden around in my opinion), just off Chapel. Belgin Beer Cafe is alot of fun in the summer!!!!

Some must do things....

Great Ocean Rd

South Melbourne market Dims Sims!

The Grand Prix is fun when it's on.

There always the footy!!

See a band at the Espy, and watch the sunset with a beer in hand.

Enter a Motorkhana with the SAU VIC guys (and stay in the caravan park @ Shep, on the weekend that it's on)

Drive up the Dandenongs

I reckon a trip up the Rialto is fun.

Chapel st in Summer!!!!

Join the SAU VIC Club.

There just some ideas...there is heaps to do in Melb :D

South Melbourne is where the SAU Vic meeting is. Just got back myself from one. I live in Port Melbourne which is the next suburb between South Melbourne and the beach and it is all a very nice area.

Can't add much to AGE's list other than if you are into your cycling use beach road on a Saturday and Sunday morning and join the 7000+ cyclists who use it of a weekend, if you hate cycling, avoid it like the plague!

If it looks like you will be here for long just kill yourself now. What a cold miserable hole. 6 years and other than the track days and SAU outings I've despised every second.

Miserable one day - shithouse the next.

LOL...was hoping to post "ask Geoff" before you saw the thread, but oh well.. you crack me up :)

Welcome to Melbourne.... :)

Oh your not here yet so will say that again when ya get here.... :D

AGE.. said a lot of good things to go have a look at.

What code do you follow NRL OR AFL ?

My self i follow NRL ..GO STORM...............06 is our year..

South Melbourne is a good location you can move around the city from there .

How long are you down here for?

welcome dood

Having lived in both melb and syd for a while I can say you will be initially disapointed eventually things will get better!

I hang out in the Longroom (Collins St) awsome joint on Fridays...wicked place. Since you in Sth Melb grab a chicken parma as the Cricketers Arms I think on Clandon st...awsome if u havn't been there...

as for good sight seeing?? Goldfingers and The G...hehehe always good viewing.

Ignore that comment, I would hate myself if I resided in the northern suburbs too!

haha.. I sort of agree with you, been living here my whole life, with this recent cold whether and me waking up in the middle of the night with near hypothermia I'm beginning to wonder why I just don't move up to sunny queensland or WA.

Melbourne is not that bad. In fact it's my favourite city, but in winter it really sucks balls. You'll love it when the warmer weather rolls through.

Thanks for the replies guys.... good to hear that a few of you have made the transition!

Certainly looking forward to it, its a different atmoshpere in Melb... if not only for the weather... At this stage not sure how permanent the move will be, I'd say will be around 12 - 15 month so no long term plans yet.

Need to put in some serious hours (no doubt at a pub) getting my head around the game of AFL (Don't follow it too closely in Syd), at the moment more so NRL / Rugby!

Will have to get on board with the next drinks outing down there and cross some of those places off the been there done that list.... based on Sunday night it was fairly packed... world cup effect I guess?!

When are you heading down?

We'll see if some 'welcoming' can be arranged.

South Melb is very nice. My stamping ground.

Markets, Albert Park Lake, Lambo dealer, Taco Bills, a variety of f*ck-shops and lots of reputable drinking establishments - pretty tough living.

Morgs son, its good to get rid of you from Sydney - haha just kididng mate, we'll miss you and your 700hp GTR >_<

Good thing is - I now have a reason to fly to Melbourne! yay!!

Oh Rick - AFL - go for the Swannies mate - great team...hehehe

Hope you enjoy your new change mate, no doubt we'll get blind before you move, you'll be missed and you'll be successful at what ever you do - your a legend mate and take it easy.

Luckily I don't have to deal with 18 year old Matt's "Learning to wire" stuff in the project cars. And there's only one piece of wiring I'm displeased about in the Landcruiser, and it's about to be cut out... However, the box loads of parts that have been going through this place lately for the Landcruiser... Brake pads Brake Rotors Full handbrake overhaul Wheel Bearings Seals Swivel hubs Steering Boxes Half the suspension joints Shocks Air bags (Ones to go in the rear springs for towing) Water pump Timing kit Lower timing case Harmonic Balancer Radiator Lots of other little seals and shits Gas struts for the bonnet New power window switches And god knows what else I've forgotten... Ha ha ha I have my fingers crossed the pinion seals don't start leaking on the diffs, that the transfer case doesn't leak, and the gearbox input shaft doesn't leak, nor the rear main seal. As they're about the only seals I haven't replaced in the driveline! I'm seriously eyeing off buying new caliper rebuild kits front and rear brake calipers... I'll probably recheck all the valve clearances soon too, and hopefully, it should be all good and sweet to haul some long distance trips again!
    • Every time I pull my 3x gauges out of the console and see the crack-addict way that I did the wiring, and I just can't bring myself to tear it all apart and "make it nice", because it is currently working. In fact, the last time I was in there I probably made it worse.
