Lightweight Flywheels For 32 And 33 Gtr And Gtst

Hi Guys,

I am going to get a lightweight flywheel for the GTST, so I talked to John at UAS and as it happens he has just bought a shiatload and suggested that we might be able to do a group buy on these things.

A lightweight flywheel is a great addition to your skyline and gives some much welcomed throttle response. Plus they are much stronger than factory cast flywheels which have been known to explode, especially when used with aftermarket clutches, and in a launching/drag racing environment. So even if only for the safety of your limbs these are worthwhile.

This GB needs 10 buyers to get off the ground. It will be open until the end of October. Flywheels can be collected from Unique Autosports (Castle Hill, Sydney) and they can also do fitting (please contact them for price). When you do change the flywheel I'd also reccomend fitting an upgraded pivot (available at UAS) and a needle roller spigot bearing (also from UAS). Both these items will be discounted if you are purchasing a group buy flywheel.

Note that the factory skyline flywheel is over 9kgs and is cast iron. when they fly to bits (and they do) it can be devestating. ask benm who had his one fly appart at around 7000rpm which wrecked his engine, gearbox, and lots of bits in his engine bay. He was lucky it didn't tear through his body.

Alloy 6061 T6 with 1045 steel friction plates replaceable and 1050 steel, heat tempered ring gear, stepped dowels 5kg $510

Chrome Molly Light 6kg $410

Super Light Chrome Molly- 4.8kg $450

Needle roller is $20 (normally $25)

High tensile pivot is $40 (normally $55)

Also available in the Group But is a one piece teflon/stainless steel braided clutch line, normally $120, GB price $105

These fly wheels come with loctite, locating dowels and ring gear. The Chrome Molly ones come as one piece. They are neutrally balanced.

UAS recommend the Chrome Molly flywheel as they are stronger and people have had issues with clutch bolts stripping thread on alloy flywheels with alloy clutch bolts on occaision (something to be carefull of if you choose alloy).

All three type are currently in stock.

Personally I'll probably go with the Chrome Molly 6kg one as it's a nice balance for a street car. Going too light can make the car a little tricky off the line, especially if used with a bitey clutch. For a race car though the super light would be perfect.

i like the alloy better to tell the truth

my car is driven every day with a 9puk button clutch

and is a dream to drive

I assume this is a typo:

Chrome Molly 1045 Light 6kg $410

CrMo steels are AISI 4xxx series (eg 4130, 4340).

1045 is a medium carbon steel (0.45% carbon) with few other alloying additions, although it's perfectly suitable for flywheels.....I've run one in Z for many years

The alloy ones do have the advantage of being able to replace the friction surface i guess too.

SteveL, I must confess I'm a bit noob with metal types it must be a typeo, as they are definately chrome molly steel. I'll check up on it.

but the cusco one has no mention with regards to NA...

are you able to chase that up? and how much for shipment up to brisbane for the super light, including the upgraded pivots and needle roller spigot bearing.

Hi mr Gilly. I will have to check for you. I would assume it will fit as RB25/RB25NEO crank is the same bolt pattern, the only question would be the offset but i would think it's the same. in fact most RBs are the same the only difference being clutch operation. some pull type, some push type. but this doesn't have a bearing on flywheels.

Would the benefits be still the same in an auto tranny as if it was in a manual car with a clutch?

sorry mate no flywheel on an auto, they just have a ring gear thingy for the starter to engage on.

I got one of these from John a while back (mild steel not chromoly), it is nice and light and has taken the abuse well (checked out by an engineer no sign of hairline cracks etc)

That 4.8kg chromoly one looks very scary. If you look at the 'weakest' points in between those holes, there isn't a lot of metal there.

How strong is it compared to the stock one?

I've heard really nasty stories of flywheels falling apart (like benm's one) and actually entering the cabin taking out legs, people, heads, whatever happens to be in its way.

agreed... the 'super light' one looks like the 'light' one just drilled out more. and if it is, i'd say it would be weaker than the 'light' one...
