i've been wanting to do some track days etc. and looking to get a car to thrash around in on the track

question is, is it possible to do with a budget of around 1 - 2k??

probably not, but the car does not have to be anything flash.

parts and labour wouldn't be too much of a problem as i can get cheap parts and have a relative that is a mechanic that is always willing to lend me a hand.

if you think it is possible, what car would you reccomend??

cheers

ke70 would be good. Is it hard to find one in decent condition that wont fall apart after a few laps??

any pics? and also what motor do they usually run?? (so i can do some research on it)

r31 or s12 come to mind. So does a ke11 (I think that's the designation).I'm hoping to do my r31 on the track for under $3.5k or so.. It might even look alright on the street (bah as much as a fridge on wheels can that is).

Hi! what are you planning on doing to the 31 for $3.5k

Should be able to pick up a R31 skyline with RB30 and 5 speed manual for about $2k.

You might need to spend a little bit on maintenance and servicing to get it to do lots of hard laps consistently though.

Sure it's $2k to start, but could cost you another $2k to keep it going. That applies to any cheap track car.

Just keep that in mind.

OKAY : I'm donning the flame-proof suit now . . . . . (ooh, it's tight in the groinal-region!)

VH Commodore. :P

HEAR ME OUT !

You'll get a rough one free, or near-free. Parts are so easy and cheap to get, You practically trip-over them as you walk into most wreckers, and You'd be AMAZED at how cheap most new genuine spare-parts are. - Not to mention, these are just about THE BEST supported thing in the Aussie performance aftermarket. Have I mentioned, that they weigh 1260kg WET, and have a generic Borg-Warner Diff centre? (sooo many drop-in LSD's)

Strip it out, do a "Ghetto rebuild" on a 5-Litre V8, with a hottish Cam, and the best flowing intake/exhaust gear you can afford, make sure the gearbox is ok (Manual only peoples) and drop in VL Turbo Calipers & front discs, with a disc rear-end . . . . . BAMMO ! Track Beeaatch !

p.s. Get yourself a REALLY tight 2nd hand, or reco'd NON-ASSISTED steering rack. They're light-enough once you're rolling, give BAGS of feedback, and you'll never worry about boiling power steering fluid. YEAH ! :)

y dont u save another 2 k and get yourself an s13 or sv rx7 non complied of course and use one of them

thinking of buying a s13 silvia thats damaged at the front, and then doing a onevia conversion. anyone know of any damaged s13's for sale (prefrably sr20 and manual)

Really, a Swift GTi is a gret option for the money you have to spend and will be cheaper and more reliable to run then some of the other cars mentioned. AND also quicker.

Other then that 70s rwd Corolla

wouldn't mind a gti but would rather hold out a bit more and buy a s13 or something.

imo a vl would be a better option than the earlier versions, even more parts again. and if you ever feel the need for more power, slap a 25 head and turbo package on it :glare:

RWD would be more fun IMO however to get out there and learn, any car mentioned here is a good base to learn on.

Ive got an R31 which I picked up for 2.5k with 12 months rego and I'll be teaching the mrs the bare basics in that! :P

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
